You have all-wheel drive all the time in the 2017 BMW X4. Based on the same rear-wheel drive architecture as the X3, as well as the 3 Series sedan and 4 Series coupe, the X$ model delivers both standard and enhanced “M” performance.
Now in its fourth model year, the current model benefits from one of the strongest powertrains in the segment.
Two turbocharged engines are offered. The standard 2-liter four-cylinder turbo makes 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. So equipped, the X4 delivers 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway.
Also available is a high-performance 3-liter six-cylinder that produces 355 horsepower and 343 pound-feet of torque, a bump of about 18 percent from last year. The six-cylinder model is rated at 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. It's also fast, capable of hitting 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds.
Both engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control.
