17 City / 26 Highway
Automotive Editor -

One of the few full-size, rear-wheel drive sedans left on the market, the brash Dodge Charger shows no signs of slowing down. It faithfully delivers exactly what some American buyers still crave – power, mass, and a healthy dose of attitude.

What's New for 2017

Dodge updated the available 8.4-inch UConnect infotainment system for faster processing, additional controls, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Models equipped with the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 engine receive an active exhaust system. The Daytona trim returns after several years on hiatus. The high-performance Hellcat gets new forged aluminum wheels.

Choosing Your Dodge Charger

Although it's tuned more for performance than comfort, the Charger offers plenty of room for five passengers and all the conveniences we expect in large sedan. The standard 3.6-liter V6 makes 292 horsepower and is available with optional all-wheel drive. Speed freaks will want to pay attention the the three V8 engines on offer: a 5.7-liter with 370 horsepower, a 6.4-liter that delivers 485 horsepower, and a 707-horsepower, supercharged 6.2-liter, reserved for the line-topping Hellcat. Models equipped with a V8 are rear-drive only. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard across the board.

What's under the hood of your Charger will depend on the trim you choose:

Offers a V6 engine and standard features like keyless ignition, a power driver seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and 17-inch alloy wheels. The six-speaker sound system includes Bluetooth connectivity and a 5-inch UConnect interface. The available Popular Equipment Group adds remote start, rear parking sensors, and satellite radio.

Builds on the SE with upgraded cloth upholstery, expanded driver seat controls, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated side mirrors, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and 18-inch wheels. The SXT also carries the newly updated 8.4-inch version of UConnect. The optional Plus Group tacks on leather upholstery, heated and ventilated power front seats, driver memory, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, and xenon headlights. The Premium Group adds adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic wipers, a power-adjustable steering wheel, navigation, and a 10-speaker Beats sound system to the Plus Group's options. (Some of these items are available in smaller packages.) Turning to performance, the Rallye Group provides a boost to 300 horsepower, a sport-tuned suspension, paddle shifters, special styling elements throughout, 20-inch wheels, and a Beats stereo (if not already equipped). The Super Track Pack adds a performance axle ratio, beefier tires, and a three-mode stability control system.

Comes with the 5.7-liter V8, upgraded braking and suspension systems, and standard 20-inches wheels and paddle shifters. The Plus and Premium Groups continue as options.

Like the R/T, but with specific suspension tuning, special leather and faux suede upholstery, and forged alloy wheels. Aside from the optional navigation and Beats stereo systems, the entire Premium Group is standard on the Daytona. The available Technology Group adds lane keeping assist, automatic high beams, and forward collision alert with automatic braking.

R/T Scat Pack

Receives the 6.4-liter V8 engine and a bigger dose of suspension and braking upgrades. Other equipment and options are similar to the regular R/T, except the Scat Pack comes standard with rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, and power front seats. The Technology Group remains available.

Daytona 392

Combines the regular Daytona with the R/T Scat Pack's performance upgrades, including the 6.4-liter engine. The Daytona 392 also receives an even larger set of brakes.

SRT 392

Carries all of the performance equipment available in the other models, plus a specially tuned adaptive suspension system and a flat-bottom steering wheel. Nearly all comfort and convenience items come standard. The Technology Group is the only major option.

Packs the 707-horsepower 6.2-liter supercharged V8, along with its own high-performance steering and suspension systems. The aforementioned option packages are standard here, except for the power seats and steering wheel, which are available as no-cost options.

A sunroof is available on all Chargers as a standalone option (bundled with a spoiler on the SE). The SRT 392 and Hellcat are available with a 19-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.

CarsDirect Tip

The SE and SXT model are fiercely competitive on price compared to other full-size sedans. Even so, we're partial to the basic R/T, which delivers exciting performance and swagger for around $35,000.
