2017 GMC Savana 3500 Overview

Mark Vallet
Automotive Editor - October 17, 2016

The GMC Savana 3500 is the one-ton choice of the Savana family and is best known for its ability to haul cargo or up to 15 people depending on how it’s configured. The Savana lineup has been a top choice for consumers looking for a commercial van for a number of years.

The 3500 is available as a cargo van or a people hauler that can comfortably seat twelve, or fifteen in extended-wheelbase veform. In addition, these vans are highly configurable and make a great choice for anyone who needs a wheelchair lift.

While the Savana 3500 is never going be mistaken for a luxury ride, it comes equipped with a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot and an optional color touchscreen that acts as the command center for the vehicle. There's a nearly endless list of options so you can customize the Savana 3500 to your needs.

The standard-length Savana has 239.7 cubic feet of a cargo space and call haul up to 8,900 pounds. The extended version can swallow up to 284.4 cubic feet of stuff.

What's New for 2017

The Savana 3500 will remain pretty much unchanged for 2017 with a complete makeover slated for next year. The optional MyLink infotainment system receives a couple of minor changes and the front seats have been beefed up with a bit more padding and hip support.

Choosing Your GMC Savana 3500

The Savana 3500 is available in cargo and passenger configurations:

Cargo Van

The cargo version of the 3500 starts at $35,260 and comes with a 4.8-liter V8 engine. The extended-wheelbase version starts at $36,145. Standard fare includes front vinyl seats, air conditioning, power windows and locks, and a basic sound system.

LS Passenger Van

The LS passenger version of the Savana 3500 has standard seating for 12, can tow up to 8,100 pounds, and manages 11 mpg in the city and 17 mpg out on the highway. The 4.8-liter V8 remains standard, and can upgrade to a more powerful 6-liter V8 for $750. Prices start at $36,885.

The LS 3500 seats twelves passengers, or fifteen when outfitted with the longer wheelbase. Standard equipment is similar to the cargo van, but you can add plenty of popular options, including navigation, a power driver seat, chrome exterior trim, and the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system.

LT Passenger Van

The LT version is a bit of an upgrade from the LS and starts at $39,055. Additional standard features include a tilt steering wheel, cruise control, keyless entry, chrome trim, rear climate control, and a host of smaller touches.

CarsDirect Tip

The upgraded interior in the LT passenger version is worth the higher price, but be careful how many accessories you add. The price can quickly get out of hand. The brawny 6-liter V8 is a smart (and affordable) choice if you intend to carry a full load of people or things on a regular basis.
