2017 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class Overview

A high-riding cousin to the CLA-Class coupe-sedan, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class is the German brand’s entry into the hotly contested sub-compact premium crossover ranks. That means small, turbocharged power, an approachable price, and just enough style and equipment to keep luxury consumers interested.

What's New for 2017

Small changes are the order of the day for the 2017 GLA-Class. Look for an updated infotainment screen and instrument cluster, standard AMG Dinamica trim on the GLA45 AMG, remote start, and a new Convenience Package. Mercedes is also including Android Auto integration.

Choosing Your Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class

The GLA-Class mirrors the CLA-Class, meaning buyers have the choice of two 2.0-liter, turbocharged engines, standard front-wheel drive or optional all-wheel drive, and a standard seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Even the GLA’s option packages mimic the CLA’s. Its Driver Assistance, Premium, and Multimedia packages contain the same content (adaptive cruise control/lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring/push-button start/heated front seats/satellite radio, and a COMAND infotainment and navigation system, respectively) for the same prices.

Unique to the GLA is a $1,400 Parking Assistance Package. This worthwhile group of toys includes a surround-view camera system and parallel park assist, as well as power-folding side mirrors.

Like the CLA, the base GLA250 uses a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder to generate 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. But that power is forced to deal with more weight – 3,296 pounds in total – and so it suffers in terms of performance, with the GLA taking 7.2 seconds to hit 60 miles per hour.

The base GLA is also less efficient, too, returning 24 miles per gallon in the city, 33 on the highway, and 27 combined. Going with the optional 4Matic all-wheel-drive system drops those figures to 23 city, 31 highway, and 26 combined.

Prices for the base GLA start at $34,395. Like the CLA-Class – starting to see the trend here? – the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system adds $2,000 to the base price.

A compact firebreather, the GLA45 AMG has one of the most powerful production four-cylinder engines on the planet, capable of producing 375 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque and scooting this little crossover to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds. Depending on the optional goodies, the top speed is either an electronically limited 155 mph or 167 mph with the optional the AMG Dynamic Plus Package. All-wheel drive and an AMG-tweaked, seven-speed dual-clutch transmission are standard.

Unsurprisingly, fuel economy takes a hit. Look for an EPA-estimated 22 mpg in the city and 28 on the highway, for a combined rating of 25 mpg.

Prices for the GLA start at $51,595.
