2017 Toyota Yaris iA OVERVIEW

The Toyota Yaris iA is a new name for a former Scion product. Introduced in 2016 as the Scion iA, this subcompact sedan transitioned to Toyota when the Scion name was canceled. But there's another twist to the story: the Yaris iA is based on the Mazda2 and is not related to the Yaris hatchback at all.

What's New for 2017

The Toyota Yaris iA is a new name for the former Scion iA. This five-passenger model is essentially unchanged from last year.

Choosing Your Toyota Yaris iA

Small cars typically offer two or three grades, but the Toyota Yaris iA flies in the face of convention by offering one model loaded with premium features. It is an unusual approach, one that brings forth a subcompact model big on value.

All models are powered by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine making 106 horsepower and 103 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard and a six-speed automatic transmission is available. Fuel economy is excellent as models outfitted with the automatic make an estimated 32 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway. Choose the manual and your fuel efficiency estimates come in at 30/39 mpg city/highway.

Toyota prices the manual at $15,950 and the automatic at $17,050. Add $865 for the destination charge.

All models are equipped with 16-inch alloy wheels set within all-season tires. Multi-reflector halogen headlamps, daytime running lights, chrome trim, and power outside mirrors with LED turn signal indicators are standard equipment. The 2017 Yaris iA is available in seven colors.

You’ll also find remote keyless entry with push-button start, power windows, power door locks, a tilt and telescopic steering column, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, cruise control, air conditioning, a rearview camera, dual sun visors with vanity mirrors, and a digital clock. Sport front bucket seats and a 60-40 split fold-flat rear seat are present.

The Yaris iA comes with a seven-inch display audio with touchscreen, six speakers, Bluetooth connectivity, voice recognition, two USB ports, and an auxiliary audio jack. Pandora, Aha, and Stitcher come standard.

Available accessories include a rear lip spoiler, mud guards, a cargo tote, display audio with navigation, and door sill enhancements.

Toyota didn’t skimp on safety features either. Beyond the expected suite of airbags, you’ll find a standard low-speed pre-collision safety system. The way this works is that it utilizes a laser sensor to help the driver avoid collisions and to minimize damage in the event of an accident.

Like all other Toyota models, the Yaris iA benefits from Standard Toyota Care, a complimentary plan covering normal factory-scheduled maintenance and 24-hour roadside assistance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first.

CarsDirect Tip

The 2017 Yaris iA is simply a great value all around. The engine is surprisingly peppy and the smooth-shifting manual is a joy. That said, choosing the automatic transmission and accessory navigation system still keeps your final price below $19,000. That's an exceptional value in this highly competitive segment.
