Behind the wheel, it's easy to forget that the M6 is a spacious four-seater that weighs 4,500 pounds. It takes off with a muted growl, and then the scenery gets blurry. The M6 hits 60 mph in 4.1 seconds and keeps sailing until the electronic limiter kicks in – at 155 mph. The seven-speed automatic transmission isn't shy about dolling out power. Any prod to the pedal produces an instant, satisfying response.

The suspension quickly dispatches any challenges thrown at it on public roads and highways. There's always the Competition Package for the feel of a street-legal racer, but the M6 doesn't need it to be thrilling. Most drivers will reach their limits long before the M6 does.

As much as we admire its power and reflexes, the M6 shines brightest as a touring car. On long stretches of road, it coddles passengers with a glass-smooth ride and an overall feel of being chauffeured rather than transported.

Style

The M6 represents the largest and most ambitious application of BMW's Gran Coupe body style. The couple-like contours look especially good stretched over the 116.7-inch wheelbase. The M6 comes off lean, agile, and poised – quite an accomplishment for a car of this size and weight.

The finely detailed interior lives up to our expectations for a car in this price class. The fine leather extends to the dashboard and door panels – and can wrap nearly every surface for an additional fee. The palette of available finishes includes carbon fiber, aluminum, black lacquer, and a variety of woods, from traditional to exotic. The 10.2-inch central touchscreen provide a dash of high-tech color to the affair. The center console runs to the rear seat, where passengers can make their own climate selections.

The Best and Worst Things

Many cars claim to offer performance and luxury, but few can provide them on equal footing to the extent that the M6 does. There are no compromises or trade-offs to be found in either department. That makes the M6 a true standout in the marketplace.

Although the M6 has four doors, it's not our idea of a luxury sedan. The full-length center console prohibits five-passenger seating, and the sloping roof limits rear head room and makes getting in and out less than graceful.
