    Expert Rating

    3.0 (Good)
    MPG
    18 City / 24 Highway

Unlike other websites and magazines, our ratings are not based solely on a singular road test, but rather a more encompassing batch of criteria: quality, safety, comfort, performance, fuel economy, reliability history and value. When comparing vehicles using our Rating System, it's important to note that the rating earned by each vehicle correlates only to the models within its class. For example, a compact car cannot be compared to a SUV—They are different vehicles altogether.

You can interpret our ratings in the following way:

5-Star: Outstanding vehicle. Only the most exceptional vehicles achieve this rating.

4-Star: Very Good vehicle. Very good and close to being the best vehicle in its class.

3-Star: Good vehicle. Decent, but not quite the best. Often affordable, but lacking key features found in vehicles of the same class.

2-Star: Below average vehicle. Not recommended, and lacking attributes a car buyer would come to expect for the price.

1-Star: Poor vehicle. Simply does not deserve to be on the road.

    2018 Chevrolet Colorado OVERVIEW

Sitting below the Silverado, the 2018 Chevrolet Colorado is a mid-size pick-up truck that challenges the Honda Ridgeline, Nissan Frontier, and Toyota Tacoma for a share of an increasingly popular part of the market.

    What's New for 2018

A new high-performance ZR2 trim, dedicated to off-road pursuits, joins the Colorado range for 2018.

    Choosing Your Chevrolet Colorado

The Colorado range starts with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 200 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque. Depending on the variant, you get a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed automatic, with rear-wheel drive standard. The other gas-powered engine option is a 3.6-liter V6 churning out 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque. It gets a six-speed automatic gearbox with rear-wheel drive or an eight-speed automatic with all-wheel drive.

Finally, there is the 2.8-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder that develops 181 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, allowing for a towing capacity of 7,700 pounds. Like the V6, a six-speed automatic transmission comes standard with the rear-drive configuration and an eight-speed auto is standard with the all-wheel drive configuration.

Unsurprisingly, the diesel engine is the most fuel-efficient offering, providing 22 miles per gallon in city and 30 mpg highway. The 2.5-liter petrol engine returns 19 miles per gallon in city and 26 mpg highway, while the V6 offers 18/25 mpg. In other words, there's virtually no reason to buy the four-cylinder.

Chevy offers the Colorado in five trims and two body styles with two bed lengths. There's a Colorado Base and WT for budget buyers, a volume LT, a well-equipped Z71, and the high-performance ZR2. The most affordable body features an extended cab with two full-sized doors in front and a pair of half doors in back – it's only available with the longer 6.1-foot bed. A crew cab features four full-sized doors, and is available with either the 6.1-foot bed or a 5.1-footer.

With three engines, the choice of rear- or four-wheel drive, two body styles, two bed lengths, and five trims, there are a huge number of configurations available for the 2018 Colorado. In fact, there are more than we can list here. So instead, the prices we show will be for the most popular powertrain/body style combination for that trim, unless otherwise noted. As a general rule, if we're mentioning a price for a V6, four-wheel drive, or a Crew Cab body, it isn't likely the most affordable starting price.

    Base

The entry-level Colorado starts at $20,995 (including $995 destination charges) and is only available with the 2.5-liter engine, a six-speed manual gearbox, rear-drive, and the extended cab/long bed.

Standard features include 16-inch steel wheels, halogen headlights, four-way power-adjustable driver seat, rear-view camera and a 7.0-inch infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity and six-speakers.

There is no optional package on this trim.

Unsurprisingly, the Colorado Base is designed mainly for fleet service and won't be too common on dealership lots.

    WT

The Colorado WT is the real-world base model, with prices starting at $29,245 for an extended-cab, four-cylinder model with four-wheel drive.

The WT trim adds two rear seats in the Extended Cab configuration and introduces numerous packages that can enhance Colorado's styling and comfort. For instance, the Custom Special Edition Package ($1,550) gives you five-year OnStar subscription, power-adjustable and body-color side-view mirrors, body-color door handles, body-color rear-bumper and 18-inch alloy wheels (16-inch wheels are standard). Meanwhile, the Convenience Package ($490) adds remote keyless entry, cruise control and an EZ Lift tailgate.

Standalone options include a $325 locking rear differential and plenty of stuff from Chevy's GearOn range of bed accessories.

    LT

A Colorado LT with the V6 engine and a Crew Cab/short bed body starts at $34,770 and represents a big step-up from the WT trim in terms of features. The LT is also the starting trim for the 2.8-liter diesel engine, which commands at least $36,495.

New components include 17-inch alloy wheels, power-adjustable side-view mirrors, remote keyless entry, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, cruise control, an eight-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, OnStar 4G LTE wifi, a USB charing port, and steering-wheel mounted controls.

Regarding the options, we suggest checking out the Luxury Package ($1,080) that adds heated driver and front passenger seats with lumbar support, single-zone climate control, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and a chrome rear bumper with chrome door handles. The Safety Package ($395) adds forward collision warning and lane departure warning, while the LT Convenience Package ($750) adds a sliding rear window with a defogger, fog lamps, and remote start.

    Z71

The Colorado Z71 in the Crew Cab/short bed body, V6 engine, and four-wheel drive starts at $36,935.

Features include those on the lower trims plus an off-road-focused suspension, automatic rear-locking differential, hill descent control, new 17-inch wheels, fog lamps, projector-beam headlights, automatic climate control, heated front seats, and remote engine start.

The Z71 is available in a special Midnight Edition trim that requires black paint but adds black wheels on knobbly Goodyear Duratrac tires, a spray-on bedliner, a body color grille, and black bowtie badges. It costs $2,995 and is the Z71's most notable extra.

    ZR2

The range-topping Colorado ZR2 is a $41,155 with the V6 engine and an extended cab body. It's also available with the diesel engine or the Crew Cab/short bed body, but four-wheel drive is standard no matter the configuration.

It gets driver-selectable front- and rear locking differentials, an off-road styling kit with increased ground clearance (you'll note the much taller front fascia, a highly advanced Multimatic DSSV damping system, all-terrain tires, leather upholstery, and wireless charging. There's also underbody armor to protect the delicate bits from rough terrain, spray-in bedliner, a trailer hitch with integrated brake control.

Aside from Chevy's GearOn accessories, the ZR2 is largely free of factory-installed options.

    CarsDirect Tip

The ideal Colorado depends on your budget and requirement. For daily drivers, though, we'd recommend the LT trim with the V6 engine at the very least – if your commute includes long, uninterrupted freeway stretches, grab the LT with the diesel engine. As for body styles, the Crew Cab with the long bed is the most versatile, although the short bed has more attractive proportions and a lower starting price.
