Overview

The best performance sedans typically come from the luxury makes, but the Dodge Charger brings such potency to the masses. Your cost and overall performance range from mild to wild, an unusual span among mainstream models.

What's New for 2018

For 2018, Dodge discontinued the Charger’s base SE model and realigned its engine offerings. All models are now rear-wheel drive, except for the all-wheel-drive only GT trim. The Rallye Group Package, previously available with the base models, is no longer offered. Now standard across the model line is a rearview camera and park assist.

Dodge Charger

Choosing Your Dodge Charger

Designed to seat five and with an emphasis on performance, the 2018 Charger supplies the amenities common to large sedans. The standard 3.6-liter V6 generates 292 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque or 300 horsepower and 264 pound-feet of torque with the GT grades.

Three V8 engines should satisfy most any buyer’s need for speed. A 5.7-liter V8 engine makes 370 horsepower and 395 pound-feet of torque. The Charger’s largest engine, a 6.4-liter V8, packs 485 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque. Exclusive to the SRT Hellcat is this Dodge’s most powerful engine, a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 with an output of 707 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. All four engines work alongside an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Standard features include automatic headlamps with LED accents, 17-inch aluminum wheels, and a rear spoiler. A tilt and telescopic steering column, dual-zone climate control, six-speaker audio system, and a seven-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, two USB ports, and an audio input jack are also included. Equipment availability varies depending on the selected grade.

Buyers have a choice of 13 exterior colors, including Redline Red Tricoat Pearl ($695) and up to three interior colors.

Dodge Charger

SXT

Now the Charger’s base trim, the SXT costs $29,590. This model comes with 17-inch painted aluminum wheels, adjustable side mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, cloth seats, brake assist, and a seven-inch UConnect interface. An available Blacktop Appearance Group Package ($1,295) brings in 20-inch gloss black painted aluminum wheels, upgraded tires, and a sport suspension. Aside from dealer-installed accessories, it's the only optional extra.

Dodge Charger

SXT Plus

Priced from $31,590, the SXT Plus adds LED fog lamps, power-heated side mirrors, 18-inch aluminum wheels, sport cloth seats, an eight-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, and a UConnect interface with an 8.4-inch display and Bluetooth connectivity.

Add $3,000 for leather, which includes a power front passenger seat. Package offerings include the Blacktop Appearance Group ($1,153), Beats Audio Group ($995 for a 10-speaker, 552-watt audio system), Driver Confidence Group ($995 for blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and auto-dimming exterior mirrors). Also available is a Navigation and Travel Group ($995) featuring GPS navigation and SiriusXM Travel Link. A sunroof is available for $1,295.

Dodge Charger

GT

The only model Charger with all-wheel drive now, the GT trim is also limited to a V6 engine and starts at $33,590.

Standard equipment includes 19-inch wheels, gloss black fascia trim, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters on a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Otherwise, standard equipment and all package options available mirror the SXT.

A Plus Package ($2,670) boosts horsepower to an even 300 and adds heated and ventilated front seats with power adjustability, a heated steering wheel, heated outboard rear seats, and a performance steering wheel. The pricier trim also includes HID headlights, gloss black trim and blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.

Adding the Plus Package also grants access to ritzier features – the $1,595 Technology Package adds adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning with lane-keeping assist, automatic high beams, a power tilt/telescopic steering wheel, and rain-sensing wipers. A GT Performance Package piles on $595 to the price and swaps out the standard 19s for a flashier set, a black spoiler, and Nappa leather and Alcantara suede upholstery. A $1,995 Sun and Sound Package marries the Beats audio system and sunroof.

Dodge Charger

R/T

Priced from $36,090, the R/T brings in the first of three V8 engines, a 5.7-liter Hemi. This model comes with 20-inch wheels, a sport suspension with drive modes, and an eight-way power driver's seat.

The Blacktop, Beats, Navigation and Travel, and Driver Confidence packages carry on, demanding $995 for each of the first three and $1,245 for the final package.

New for the R/T is the $5,995 Premium Group. For that lofty price, owners get the Plus Group (available as a $2,395 standalone package), the GT's Technology Package, and the Beats Audio Group. A $1,205 Super Track Package adds a functional hood scoop, a black grille, a firmed-up sport suspension, Dodge's Performance Pages information system built into the infotainment system, and LED fog lights.

The big news for the R/T is the Daytona trim. Priced at $3,560, it transforms the already aggressive Charger into a true show-boater, adding a huge range of trim pieces, graphics, and badges, upgraded 20-inch alloys, a three-mode stability control system, Nappa and Alcantara seat upholstery, the Super Track Package, a Mopar cold-air intake, and some bits and pieces from the Premium Group.

Dodge Charger

R/T 392

Costing $41,090, the R/T 392 delivers the 6.4-liter V8 engine, 20-inch wheels set within performance tires, and your choice of three Nappa/Alcantara seats.

The Daytona Package's price increases to $4,450 – ventilated front seats with leather upholstery and six-piston brakes account for the premium. If the Daytona's visual statement is a bit much, the $2,200 Dynamics Package will score you black wheels and the Daytona's six-piston stoppers. The Technology, Beats Audio, and Driver Confidence packages area also available.

Aside from the style and performance bonus, adding the Daytona Package opens up the $1,995 Harman Kardon Audio Group and 19 speakers, including a booming subwoofer.

Dodge Charger

SRT 392

Starting at $52,240, the Charger SRT 392 is the most potent version of Dodge's second-tier V8 model. It adds most of the functional goodies from the Daytona (six-piston brakes and Performance Pages) without any of the tinsel, and then adds adaptive dampers and heated and ventilated front seats with Laguna leather upholstery.

The only available option packages are the Technology Group Package ($1,595) and the Harman Kardon Audio Group Package with 19 speakers ($1,995). Customers can grab a flashy set of Brass Monkey forged wheels for $995, a black roof decal for $1,500, or red seat belts for $195.

Dodge Charger

SRT Hellcat

In a league of its own, the SRT Hellcat costs $69,090, which is reasonable for a 707-hp 6.2-liter, supercharged V8. There's a hood scoop with dual heat extractors, SRT drive modes with dual horsepower modes – for when you only need 500 horsepower – and high-performance brakes.

The Power Convenience Group is a no-cost upgrade, adding power front seats with lumbar support and a power tilt and telescopic steering column. Available options include Pirelli PZero summer tires ($595), a black painted roof ($1,500), power sunroof ($1,995), and the Harman Kardon audio system. Owners can also highlight their Hellcat with painted brake calipers in black, gunmetal, or orange for $495, while the $1,500 black roof from the SRT 392 is also available, as are a pair of stripe packages, priced at $995 each.

CarsDirect Tip

While 475 horsepower sounds like a lot, the R/T 392 and SRT 392 are really the sweet spot for the Charger. They also give customers a wide range of price and style options (including the flashy Daytona trim), and are the smart choice for performance-minded consumers.

If you’re looking for a mainstream rear-wheel drive full-size sedan, the 2018 Dodge Charger won’t disappoint. Dodge has the segment well covered too, supplying engine choices ranging from mild to absolutely wild, wrapped within a timeless package.

Best Value

Dodge offers a dizzying array of trims and packages to accompany the Charger, its four-door sports sedan. The Charger R/T 392 is our “best value” choice as it brings one of three V8 engines offered (a V6 with available all-wheel drive is standard) and pairs this engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission with Autostick for manual gear management.

The R/T 392 starts at $41,090 (including a $1,095 destination charge). Standard features include a rear lip spoiler, dual power-operated and heated side mirrors, climate control, a rearview camera, and a 6.4-liter V8 engine.

Several package options are available, including a Beats Audio Group, Harman/Kardon Audio Group, Dynamics Package and a MOPAR Interior Appearance Group. Wheel, seat, navigation, and individual upgrades such as a power sunroof allow for customization. We found the Quick Order Package is the most cost effective as it ties in many of the key elements of several packages and individual items to one package.

  • Model: 2018 Dodge Charger R/T 392
  • Engine: 6.4-liter V8
  • Output: 485 hp/475 lb.-ft.
  • Transmission: Eight-speed automatic
  • Drivetrain: Rear-wheel drive
  • MPG: 15 city/25 highway
  • Options: Quick Order Package 21Y Daytona 392 ($4,450, MOPAR cold air intake system, 20-inch forged painted aluminum wheels set within performance tires, upgraded brakes, power-heated side mirrors, Daytona decals and badging, a power tilt-and-telescopic steering column, heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, heated outboard rear seats and leather seats).
  • Base Price: $46,090 (including the $1,095 destination charge)
  • Best Value Price: $44,068

Performance

Dodge Charger

The 2018 Dodge Charger produces 485 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque from its 6.4-liter V8 engine. An eight-speed automatic transmission works alongside this engine.

We like this sedan’s throwback behavior, embodied in a rear-wheel drive package powered by a robust, if not thirsty, V8 engine. It rides as well as some of Europe’s finest luxury sedans, with excellent acceleration and superb handling. Although there is no manual gearbox available, the Autostick feature is a worthy substitute for controlling gears.

To no surprise, the Dodge Charger R/T consumes a lot gasoline. This model requires premium gasoline and only makes an EPA-estimated 15 miles per gallon in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. You’re considering this model for performance, not efficiency, so keep this thought at the forefront of your thinking while shopping.

Interior and Exterior

The coke-bottle style of the Dodge Charger hearkens to another era, but still looks great more than a decade after this model’s reintroduction in the mid-2000s. Its blunt nose, strong shoulders, high waistline, firm roofline, and wide rear deck enhance this sedan’s sporting credentials.

Inside, you’ll find room for five and, unlike some models, it makes good on that space. That said, tall passengers may find the sloping roofline invades on headroom space. A roomy trunk supplies 16.1 cubic feet of storage space.

This model comes with full power accessories, satellite radio and HD Radio, two USB ports, Bluetooth, and a UConnect interface with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The Best and Worst Things

Competing large mainstream sedans lack the fun-to-drive characteristics inherent to the Dodge Charger, but this comes at the expense of fuel economy and a costlier grade of fuel.

Right For...

Dodge Charger

The enthusiast who wants the performance of the two-door Challenger, but the convenience of a four-door sedan.

Wrong For...

Anyone preferring a modern style. There's no masking the retro-influenced style of the Charger. If you’re looking for a sleek sedan, nearly every competing model meets that test.

The Bottom Line

The Dodge Charger has aged remarkably well, maintaining its performance thrills in an old-school form. Outside of the Chrysler 300, there isn’t anything else like it among mainstream models.
