Overview

Launched only a year ago, the F-Pace was not only Jaguar’s first-ever SUV but also became its best-selling vehicle. The five-passenger, small crossover SUV looks to continue its sales momentum with a new engine, an additional trim package, and expanded safety features for the 2018 model year.

What's New for 2018

The F-Pace expands its power offerings with a new turbocharged inline-four, which will serve as the base powertrain on 2018 models and receive "25t" designation. A new top-level Portfolio trim level offers more luxury options while an updated paint palette sees renamed hues to match Land Rover models. New 2018 safety options include forward traffic detection and forward vehicle guidance.

Jaguar F-PACE

Choosing Your Jaguar F-PACE

The five-passenger F-Pace's combination of luxury, practicality, and performance in a well-executed design have made it a winner so far. The new inline-four for 25t-designated models will broaden the F-Pace's appeal while producing 247 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. The 3.0-liter supercharged V6 will continue to power 35t and S models and offer 340 or 380 hp, respectively, and 332 lb-ft of torque. The 2.0-liter turbodiesel in 20d models offers 180 hp and 318 lb-ft of torque. All F-Pace models will continue to use an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel-drive as standard.

Although the EPA hasn't gotten around to it, fuel economy on the new 25t models should easily beat that of the larger-displacement 35t and S models. The V6-equipped 35t is EPA rated at 18 miles per gallon city, 23 highway, and 20 combined. The diesel-powered 20d receives an EPA estimate of 26 city, 33 highway, and 29 combined mpg.

Driving dynamics remain a hallmark of the Jaguar brand and maintaining such performance, especially in a crossover SUV, is evident as the F-Pace features the same chassis technologies as the F-Type sports car, such as torque vectoring, adaptive dynamics, and configurable dynamics.

The standard all-wheel-drive system offers all-season driver confidence, especially when paired with optional technology such as Adaptive Surface Response. Also standard is All Surface Progress Control which automatically controls the throttle and brakes on low-traction surfaces, such as grass or snow, to enable the vehicle to pull away smoothly.

Now the bad news: the base price of the F-Pace has increased for 2018. Previously, 20d models offered the lowest entry point for F-Pace buyers at $41,985 but the new 25t is the new base, starting at $43,060 (including $995 in destination charges). 2018 F-Pace diesel models start at $47,270 and V6 models at $49,970. All prices include a $995 destination charge.

On sale in May, five trim levels are offered for 2018 F-Pace models:

Jaguar F-PACE

Base

Standard equipment includes 18-inch alloy wheels, LED taillights, daytime running lights, a power tailgate, push-button start, leatherette seats, a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, rear passenger air vents, 40/20/40-folding rear seats, and an 11-speaker Meridian sound system. Base models also feature hill launch assist, emergency brake assist, dynamic stability control, traction control, and a tire pressure monitoring system.

An available Cold Climate Package ($1,430) adds a heating functions to the steering wheel, front and rear seats, a front windshield, and front washer jets. Navigation, a rearview camera, and power-adjustable front seats are a la carte options.

Jaguar F-PACE

Premium

Starting at $45,770, Premium trim models get 19-inch alloy wheels, leather interior trim, a rearview camera, auto-dimming and power-folding exterior mirrors, front-seat and exterior mirror memory, and Homelink compatibility.

In addition to the available packages and options offered on the base model, a Vision Package ($2,145) adds adaptive xenon headlights, front and rear parking aids, blind spot monitoring, auto emergency braking, and lane departure warning. The Black Package ($360) adds gloss black exterior details. Twenty-inch wheels are optional.

Jaguar F-PACE

Prestige

For $50,120, even fancier leather, navigation, a power-adjustable steering wheel, four-way lumbar adjustment in front, and the Cold Climate Package become standard features. Twenty- and 22-inch wheels are options over the 19-inch standard alloys.

Several packages are available, but most notable are the conveniences of the Technology Package ($3,265), which adds a 10.2-inch infotainment display and a 12.3-inch instrument panel display, and the Comfort and Convenience Package ($1,840), which adds heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, power-recline rear seats, a gesture-activated tailgate, and a rear-seat remote release in the trunk. An Adaptive Dynamics Package ($1,020) adds Adaptive Surface Response as well as adaptive and configurable dynamics.

Jaguar F-PACE

R-Sport

A starting price of $55,170 brings in 20-inch alloy wheels, exclusive R-Sport exterior and interior details, and unique sport-style seats. Standard safety features include adaptive LED headlights with automatic high beams, fog lights, lane keep assist, driver fatigue alert, blind spot monitoring, reverse traffic detection, and autonomous emergency braking.

A Driver Assistance Package ($3,265) adds a surround camera system, park assist, adaptive cruise control, and traffic sign recognition with an adaptive speed limiter. A Luxury Interior Package ($2,350) adds four-zone climate control and premium-material headlining and carpets.

Note that S models ($60,770) have the distinction of being offered only with the supercharged V6 engine while sharing the standard features and optional equipment of the R-Sport trim.

Jaguar F-PACE

Portfolio

Available only on 35t models, the limited volume Portfolio starts at $64,195. Standard equipment includes 20-inch alloys, perforated Windsor leather seats, 10-way power-adjustable front seats, premium interior veneers, performance brakes, a head-up display as well as features from the Luxury Interior, Technology, and Comfort and Convenience packages.

The Adaptive Dynamics package remains an option as do a heated front windshield and heated washer jets ($385).

CarsDirect Tip

While one would be hard-pressed to select a 2018 F-Pace within the $50,000 threshold, especially with an increased starting MSRP, the feat is not impossible. A 25t Premium model with added Cold Climate package, Vision package, and navigation can be had for $49,855. However, opting for more power or more fuel economy will invariably mean more in monthly payments.

The salacious Jaguar F-Type may set hearts afire, but the truth is it's the F-PACE that keeps the lights on. Since being introduced in 2016, the handsome F-PACE crossover has easily managed to outsell its stablemates. And how can anyone be surprised? It does, after all, live up to the classic Jaguar mantra of grace, space, and pace. The 2018 Jaguar F-PACE provides the pace with a newly available turbocharged four-cylinder, and the grace and space remain as undeniably Jaguar – and undeniably alluring – as ever.

Best Value

To option out an F-PACE is to master the art of mixing and matching. Besides the six trim levels, there are four engines available, including two 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinders, a supercharged V6, and a four-pot turbodiesel. Of all these, the V6 is the most tantalizing, but it costs a pretty penny and is reserved only for the top-tier models. The 296-horsepower turbo-four isn't as ritzy, but the combination of power and affordability make it our choice.

As for trim, we'd go for the R-Sport, which sits second from top in the F-PACE hierarchy. Compared to the lower-spec models, the R-Sport brings on board important and worthwhile features like automatic emergency braking, lane keeping and lane change assist, blind-spot monitoring, driver condition alerts, and other active safety features. There's also a nice heaping of frivolous features, such as 18-way power heated seats, genuine leather upholstery, and 20-inch wheels. If you want your F-PACE to act the part of a luxury crossover rather than just look it, the R-Sport with the 296-hp four-cylinder is the best way to go.

This is what our Coventry kitty would look like once the paperwork was finalized:

  • Model: 2018 Jaguar F-PACE R-Sport
  • Engine: 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder
  • Output: 296 hp / 301 lb-ft
  • Transmission: Eight-speed automatic
  • Drivetrain: All-wheel drive
  • MPG: 22 City / 27 Hwy
  • Options: Comfort and Convenience Package ($1,840, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, electronically reclining rear seats, remote release levers for the rear seats, power gesture tailgate).
  • Base Price: $58,170 (including a $995 destination charge)
  • Best Value Price: $60,010

Performance

Jaguar F-PACE

With so many powertrain combinations, there's a whole spectrum of performance available to the prospective buyer. The two questions are only how fast you want to go and how much you want to spend.

While the base 247-hp 2.0-liter turbo-four is no slouch, it might not cut the mustard for some. Not to worry, there's also a 296-hp version of this engine available. That extra juice cuts the zero to 60 time down to 5.7 seconds – not too shabby for a 3,900-pound crossover. Unfortunately, our experience with this motor in other Jaguar products has been less than stellar. While the power is there, it delivers it with moans and groans, caterwauling its way up the rev range. While we haven't driven an F-PACE with this engine, we can only hope that it sounds more refined than it does elsewhere in the lineup.

The availability of the four-cylinders aren't too surprising. What crossover these days doesn't offer a 2.0-liter turbo-four? But a little more notable are the two other engines Jaguar is willing to plunk into the bay: a 180-hp turbodiesel and a 380-hp supercharged V6. As you might imagine, the former is a thrifty little powerplant that's also the slowest choice here. The latter, though, is a lovely piece of work, with effortless power and throttle response as smooth as polished marble.

No matter what's under the hood, all F-PACE models handle impressively for a vehicle with such a high center of gravity. It's not surprising, when you consider that this is a product of the company which built the D-Type, E-Type, and, its current superstar, the F-Type.

All that road-going heritage doesn't preclude it from having off-roading capability, either. Indeed, the F-PACE has taken a few cues from corporate sibling Land Rover, and boasts 8.4 inches of ground clearance and 20.7 inches of water-fording capability.

Style

It might not be quite as beautiful as the achingly-handsome XF shooting brake, but there's few crossovers which can match the tastefully elegant lines of the F-PACE. It refrains from chasing fads or turning the front and rear fascias into automotive Halloween masks. Instead, everything is subtle and traditional while also hinting at the potential of the mechanical hardware hiding underneath.

All this is a modern interpretation of the philosophies that have guided Jaguar since the days of Sir William Lyons. The interior, though, is a far cry from the wood-and-leather sanctuaries that defined old Jaguars. The F-PACE opts for a simple-but-functional cabin, one that doesn't even have genuine leather until you reach the R-Sport trim. We find it a bit spartan, especially when thoughts of the marque's old saloons sneak upon us.

Despite lacking the feel of a British smoking room, it's still a fine place to spend time in. There's good visibility all around, and the seats are firm, supportive, and comfortable. What we don't like are the many inconspicuous black buttons and the awkwardly placed windows and door locks. Once you unlock the doors rather than accidentally lower the windows, the passengers who pile in will find themselves with enough space to get comfortable.

The Best and Worst Things

The style and performance (from the optional four and six, at least) is classic Jaguar – effortless, smooth, and debonair. If James Bond metamorphosed into a crossover, it'd be the Jaguar F-PACE.

Unfortunately, the spartan interior and awkwardly placed switchgear make one wistfully reminisce about the parlor-room-on-wheels interiors of vintage Jaguars.

Right For? Wrong For?

Jaguar F-PACE

Those who love the elegance and performance of a Jaguar but need space and capability would do well to take a look at this crossover.

If you're looking for fuel economy, shop elsewhere. The four-cylinder's EPA ratings of 22 miles per gallon city and 27 mpg highway are disappointing. The diesel does manage 33 mpg highway, but the slow-moving oil-burner isn't for everyone.

The Bottom Line

It's hard to walk away from the 2018 Jaguar F-PACE without feelings of exhilaration and glee. That's what this machine is, after all – a crossover that's been spiked with emotion. Any faults or quibbles you have with it fall away as the F-PACE evokes a certain right-brain pleasure that few crossovers can match. We can say with confidence that this is one crossover Sir William Lyons would approve of.
