Our Take: 2018 Land Rover Range Rover

, Automotive Editor -

The Land Rover Range Rover is the king of the endlessly expanding Range Rover lineup. As the king, it remains true to its roots with upright styling and more luxury that anyone really needs but everyone wants. The 2018 Land Rover Range Rover has gone through a handful of changes to its looks inside and out — fixing some of its less-than-modern bits inside is the biggest change.

While it remains the king of its brand, is the 2018 Range Rover still make sense in the large luxury crossover segment? Keep reading to find out.

Performance

Land Rover Range Rover

There is no doubt the 2018 Land Rover Range Rover retains its throne at the top of the capable-luxury-SUV mountain. It’s off-road prowess remains, but its on-road class is also present and account for.

The array of engine options the 2018 Land Rover Range Rover has offers an option for just about any driver. Even those looking for thriftiness can opt for the turbo-diesel V6 that delivers 22 miles per gallon city and 28 highway. On the gasoline side, you sacrifice a lot in fuel economy, but the output ranges from 340 horsepower in the base V6 to 550 hp from the range-topping V8.

With that power comes serious thirst. The gasoline-fueled Range Rover gets 17 mpg city and 23 highway at best. And, while it has all that off-road ability, do you really want to take a $100,000-plus SUV through the woods?

Style

The 2018 Land Rover Range Rover underwent a few exterior changes, though you need to put it side by side with last year’s model to spot them. Despite these changes, the Range Rover continues to hark back to its upright SUV roots, keeping its fan base happy.

Inside, Land Rover introduced an all-new center stack that replaces most of the knobs and buttons with two multi-function touchscreens. This cleans up the dash and makes it feel even more upscale.

That said, this new buttonless dashboard also has a steep learning curve as you try to figure out how to operate each function. And, despite the new-look dashboard and revised front end, the 2018 Range Rover is showing its age.

The Best and Worst Things

The sheer do-it-all function of the Range Rover is astonishing. Want to go off-road? It’s got you. Want to race a sports car to the next stop light? It can handle that. Want to haul business clients around in class? It can handle that too. It’s the ultimate luxury SUV.

But, you pay dearly for this function. Sure, its base price isn’t terrible, but at the top of the range it nears $210,000. That’s a lot of cash for an SUV that has the Range Rover’s off-road chops.

Right For? Wrong For?

Land Rover Range Rover

The 2018 Land Rover Range Rover is perfect for the businessperson who is constantly shuttling associates around and does just as much work on the road as he or she does in the office.

However, someone looking to buy a 2018 Range Rover hoping to take it back to its roots of barreling down narrow trails will find that hard to do once they see the price tag.

The Bottom Line

The Range Rover does just about everything very well, but one of its largest draws — its legendary off-road capabilities — will probably go completely untested. And Land Rover buries a lot of that massive price tag in its ability to travel off-road. There are equivalent luxury SUVs that are significantly cheaper because they can’t crawl over rocks.
