30 City / 35 Highway
Automotive Editor -

The 2018 Toyota Yaris may not be an exciting car, but the ultra-affordable hatchback provides rock-solid reliability and excellent fuel economy, which makes it an appealing purchase for consumers on a budget.

What's New for 2018

Toyota has added new color options and updated the infotainment system. Otherwise, the 2018 Yaris is more or less the same.

Choosing Your Toyota Yaris

Under the hood, the 2018 Yaris carries over a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine generating 105 horsepower and 103 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent to the front-wheels by a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic gearbox, depending on the variant.

The manual Yaris returns a fuel economy of 30 miles per gallon in city, 36 highway and 33 mpg combined. Whereas, the automatic-equipped models have an economy of 30 miles per gallon in city, 35 highway and 32 mpg combined.

There are three trim levels – L, LE and SE. The L and LE trims are available in both three- and five-door configurations, while the SE trim is only available in the five-door arrangement.

The entry-level Yaris L starts at $16,520 (including an $895 destination charge) for the three-door, manual variant. Standard equipment includes 15-inch wheels, a 6.1-inch touchscreen infotainment setup with Toyota's Entune multimedia system, six speakers, steering wheel controls for audio, cloth upholstery, nine airbags and a driver assist package that incorporates lane departure assist, front collision prevention system and automatic high beam. The rear drum brakes give away the Yaris' budget nature.

An automatic transmission is a $750. Meanwhile, customers will have to shell out $17,645 for the five-door Yaris L – at least the more versatile trim comes standard with the four-speed auto.

The Yaris LE rings up at $18,170 for the three-door body and $18,545 for the five-door layout. The four-speed auto is the only available transmission. Features include the components on the L trim plus cruise control, keyless entry, a more sophisticated cabin and restyled 15-inch wheels.

The range-topping, five door Yaris SE costs $19,145 for the manual variant and $19,945 for the automatic. Standard features in the range-topping trim include LED running lights, fog lamps, 16-inch wheels, and an upgraded seven-inch infotainment system with navigation. The upholstery is still fabric, but the steering-wheel and the shift-knob are wrapped in leather. The Yaris SE also benefits from a sport-tuned suspension and rear disc brakes.

CarsDirect Tip

If you don’t have a lot of money to spend, the base Yaris L is not a bad pick by any means. However, if you're looking for more features, the SE variant is a better value than the LE and with a sportier suspension and stouter brakes will probably be the better drive.
