Overview

Audi is making a splash in the electric revolution with their latest crossover utility vehicle: the e-tron. The 2019 Audi e-tron is a roomy and comfortable five-passenger mid-size that's available in two trims. Consumers looking for an upscale EV will find the e-tron attractive and filled with value-driven accessories.

What's New for 2019

The 2019 Audi e-tron is an all-new vehicle, the brand's first full production electric vehicle.

Choosing Your Audi e-tron

The Audi e-tron is offered in two trims: Premium Plus and Prestige. Each receives propulsion via a dual-electric motor powertrain that sends power to the brand's quattro all-wheel-drive system. The electric motors can produce 414 pound-feet of torque and as much as 490 lb-ft with the boost system engaged. Electricity is stored inside a 95-kilowatt battery pack that can propel the e-tron to an automaker-estimated 250-mile driving range. The official range has yet to be determined the EPA. Charging the e-tron is a snap – taking approximately 90 minutes when connected to a 240-volt power outlet (Level 2) and can charge to nearly 80 percent capacity within 30 minutes when connected to an ultra-fast charging unit.

Standard features include full LED lighting, 20-inch wheels, illuminated door sills, a panoramic sunroof, 12-way power and heated front seats, leather seating, navigation, a 16-speaker audio system, and Audi’s side assist with a rear cross-traffic alert system. The e-tron also features an adaptive suspension system that adjusts the steering, ride comfort, and other driving functions designed to range from sporty to comfortable.

Premium Plus

The base e-tron is the Premium Plus that begins at $75,795 (all prices include the $995 destination charge). The Premium Plus includes all of the standard inclusions listed above along with heated and ventilated front seats, a Bang and Olufsen sound system, a surround-view camera system, and the Audi MMI Navigation system with Virtual Cockpit Plus system. Brilliant Black is the base exterior color option, but consumers can opt for nine additional color choices for an additional $595.

The Premium Plus is available with several package upgrades. The Driver Assistance Plus package ($2,850) adds adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assistant, intersection assistant, lane keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking. A Cold Weather package ($900) offers integrated windshield wiper washer jets, heated rear seats, and enhanced cabin and battery preconditioning. Finally, a Towing Package ($650) will add a trailer hitch and support equipment that allows 4,000 pounds of towing capacity.

Audi e-tron

Prestige

The range-topping Prestige trim costs $82,795 and is a slightly-enhanced variant of the base. This trim adds individual contour leather seats with massage settings for the front seats, an ionizer and fragrance air quality package, a head-up display, power door closers, and the contents of the Driver Assistance Plus package. Consumers can opt for a 21-inch alloy wheel upgrade ($1,500), the Cold Weather package, and the Towing Package to spice up their e-tron.

CarsDirect Tip

If an all-electric luxury mid-size crossover is on your radar, the 2019 Audi e-tron is worth a detailed look. The e-tron has a longer estimated driving range (160 miles) after a 30-minute high-speed charge than the Tesla Model X (144.5 miles) or the Jaguar I-Pace (144 miles) and is less expensive. Among the two trims, the Prestige offers consumers the better value.

Speedy charging. Thanks to its 150-kW DC fast charging capability, the 2019 Audi e-tron does its best to quell range anxiety by giving owners the ability to get a decent amount of range back without having to wait hours. When plugged into a fast charger, the e-tron can get up to 80 percent of its range back in just 30 minutes. On a Level 2 charger, charge times are around nine hours.

Excellent equipment. It may be an electric vehicle, but the e-tron isn't a stripped-down fuel-efficient vehicle. The base model comes with heated and ventilated front seats, leather upholstery, an adaptive air suspension, a Bang & Olufsen sound system, Audi's Virtual Cockpit, a 10.1-inch touchscreen, LED headlights, a panoramic sunroof, and more.

If you move up to the range-topping Prestige trim, you're getting a bona fide luxury vehicle. Things like power-closing doors, massaging front seats, a head-up display, and Valcona leather are included as standard on that trim. The e-tron may be all-electric, but it still follows Audi's other vehicles by offering upscale features.

Electrifying performance. Anyone that's driven an electric vehicle knows how addicting instantaneous acceleration is, and it's no different with the e-tron. The SUV has two electric motors – one at both ends – that can make up to a combined 402 horsepower and 490 pound-feet of torque. With that much power going to all four wheels, the e-tron can get to 60 mph in just 5.5 seconds.

It may be powerful and quick, but the e-tron is still easy to drive, quiet, and comfortable. The standard air suspension soaks up rough roads and can raise the SUV's ride height by three inches for some light off-roading or getting through inclement weather. Multiple drive modes – Auto, Comfort, Efficiency, Individual, Offroad, and Allroad – allow you to cater the e-tron to your liking.

Audi e-tron

Subpar range. The EPA hasn't released official range for the e-tron yet, but the SUV is expected to have a range of approximately 200 miles. That figure can't match rivals from Tesla, Chevrolet, Hyundai, and Jaguar. While the e-tron can recharge quickly, its range leaves a lot to be desired.

Final thoughts. The majority of electric vehicles require some sort of compromise. Whether it's versatility, features, or performance, few EVs manage to be as well rounded as gasoline cars. With a spacious cabin, real luxury features, and great performance, there's little to complain about with the 2019 Audi e-tron.

We'll have to wait until the EPA releases its official range and fuel economy figures for the e-tron, but the model's incredible fast-charging figure is more than enough to warrant a purchase. Having excellent performance and high-end features that live up to the Audi badge make switching to electric easy.

The Tesla Model X is more expensive, but it's still the king of range when it comes to EVs, boasting up to 295 miles of range. The Jaguar I-PACE is quicker, looks more futuristic, and can travel up to 234 miles on a single charge. If traveling a long distance is a priority, but you're working on a budget, the Hyundai Kona Electric's range of 258 miles and sub-$40,000 price tag is incredibly attractive.
