Automotive Editor - January 14, 2019

The 2019 Audi S3 sedan, which comes in two trim levels, continues to offer the brand's quattro all-wheel-drive system and a 288-horsepower engine.

What's New for 2019

The S3 remains mechanically and visually unchanged for 2019, slotting into the A3 range one model below the flagship RS3. It’s possible to customize the S3 with a variety of available technology packages, including Audi’s in-dash virtual cockpit.

Choosing Your Audi S3

Every Audi S3 is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, producing 288 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. This is supplied to all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The S3 achieves an EPA-estimated 22 miles per gallon city, 29 mpg highway, and 25 combined.

The S3 is distinguished from lesser A3 models with full LED headlights and a hexagonal grille incorporating twin-blade slats. Four exhaust pipes add a flourish to the rear, while the three-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel elevates the cabin. Standard safety features include rear cross-traffic alert and the Audi pre sense suite, which automatically closes windows and the sunroof, pretensions the seat belts, and activates the hazard warning lights.

Four driving modes are available, adjusting the responsiveness of the transmission, engine, steering wheel, and accelerator pedal. Comfort mode softens the suspension and lightens the steering, whereas Dynamic mode is designed to optimize performance.

The S3 is available in two trims:

Premium Plus

The S3 Premium Plus retails for $45,495 (all prices include the $995 destination fee). Front and rear acoustic sensors combine with a rearview camera to simplify parking, while keyless ignition is standard alongside automatic lights and wipers. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are accompanied by Audi Phone Box, which provides wireless charging and signal boosting. The cabin receives dual-zone climate control and a panoramic sunroof, and the eight-way power front seats are heated with four-way power lumbar adjustment.

The $1,300 Black optic package combines 19-inch five-arm rotor-style titanium wheels with black bodywork finishes and mirror housings. The Technology package ($3,200) supports handwriting inputs for Audi’s 12.3-inch digital instrument display and navigation system. A Bang and Olufsen sound system is also included with the Technology package. The S Sport package ($1,100) brings red brake calipers and Audi's magnetic ride system, while the S Sport seat package ($1,450) adds sport seats with nappa leather, "S" badging, manual adjustment for the front seats with four-way power lumbar, and door armrests and kneepads in leatherette with contrast stitching.

The S3 Prestige costs $50,795. It receives a number of safety upgrades over the Premium Plus, including lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and steering assistance while parking. The side mirrors are auto-dimming and power-folding. In the cabin, the Audi virtual cockpit is standard alongside navigation, and the stereo is upgraded to a 14-speaker Bang and Olufsen system. The Black optic, S Sport, and S Sport seat packages return unchanged.

CarsDirect Tip

The Premium Plus represents the best value in the 2019 Audi S3 range, as it costs $5,300 less than the Prestige but features a broadly similar level of specification. The Technology package significantly improves the S3’s infotainment offering.
