2019 BMW M5 Overview

Neil Cumins
Automotive Editor - July 26, 2018

While the 2018 BMW M5 enjoys screen time in the latest Mission: Impossible movie, the 2019 BMW M5 is entering production alongside a hardcore Competition variant.

What's New for 2019

The all-new M5 Competition is an even more focused take on the standard M5 sedan, topping out at 189 mph. A carbon fiber roof lowers the car’s weight and center of gravity, while three gearbox settings range from comfortable to track-ready.

Choosing Your BMW M5

The 2019 BMW M5 is the latest high-performance version of this iconic German sedan. It’s powered by a potent 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8, driving either the rear wheels or all four wheels when BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system is engaged. A rear bias is maintained in AWD mode for sharper handling, while BMW’s Launch Control ensures optimal getaways in all weather conditions. An eight-speed automatic transmission can be manually overridden using paddle shifters behind the wheel.

The standard M5 sedan generates 600 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque, but the Competition wrings an extra 17 horses out of the V8. This knocks a tenth of a second off the base model’s zero-to-60 mph time of 3.2 seconds. Because production of the 2019 M5 has only just started, fuel economy figures are yet to be confirmed – the 2018 model delivered 15 miles per gallon city and 21 mpg highway.

The M5 incorporates the sixth generation of BMW’s iDrive infotainment system. This has natural language understanding and gesture control, with a head-up display alongside a 10.2-inch touchscreen unit capable of displaying three different screens simultaneously. It’s possible to add wireless smartphone charging and a WiFi hotspot as part of the $4,000 Executive Package.

The standard 2019 BMW M5 retails at $104,695, which includes the $995 destination charge and a $1,000 gas guzzler tax. Specifications include 20-way adjustable front seats, a 600-watt Harman Kardon stereo with 16 speakers, part-Merino leather trim, and a heated steering wheel.

The Executive Package ($4,000) adds wireless charging, a WiFi hotspot, park assist, a power rear sunshade, rear side window shades, four-zone automatic climate control, heated seats, ventilated and massaging front seats, soft-close automatic doors, and a surround-view camera system. The Driving Assistance Plus Package ($1,700) equips the M5 with adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane keeping assist, front cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, and traffic jam assist.

Full Merino leather is available throughout the cabin for $5,000, though the upgrade requires the Executive Package. Other notable options include a no-cost moonroof, a rear-seat entertainment package ($2,200) that adds seat back screens and a controller to access the infotainment system, a Bowers & Wilkins surround sound audio system ($3,400) that outputs 1,400 watts through 16 speakers governed by microphone-controlled sound equalizing, and M Carbon Ceramic Brakes ($8,500).

The $111,995 M5 Competition is distinguished visually by subtle changes including Y-spoke 20-inch alloy wheels, black chrome tips on all four exhaust pipes, and extensive use of high-gloss exterior trim. M-branded seat belts add a touch of class to the cabin. Like the standard M5, the Competition can be augmented with the Driving Assistance Plus and Executive Packages, Merino leather, the Bowers & Wilkins audio system, and the rear-seat entertainment pack.

CarsDirect Tip

It’s hard to justify the extra $7,300 for the Competition when the standard 2019 BMW M5 is so dynamically impressive. The Executive Package is highly recommended, since it includes several features buyers might expect on a car commanding a six-figure price tag and is necessary for many other option upgrades.
