Expert Rating

2.3 (Fair)

Unlike other websites and magazines, our ratings are not based solely on a singular road test, but rather a more encompassing batch of criteria: quality, safety, comfort, performance, fuel economy, reliability history and value. When comparing vehicles using our Rating System, it's important to note that the rating earned by each vehicle correlates only to the models within its class. For example, a compact car cannot be compared to a SUV—They are different vehicles altogether.

You can interpret our ratings in the following way:

5-Star: Outstanding vehicle. Only the most exceptional vehicles achieve this rating.

4-Star: Very Good vehicle. Very good and close to being the best vehicle in its class.

3-Star: Good vehicle. Decent, but not quite the best. Often affordable, but lacking key features found in vehicles of the same class.

2-Star: Below average vehicle. Not recommended, and lacking attributes a car buyer would come to expect for the price.

1-Star: Poor vehicle. Simply does not deserve to be on the road.

The 2019 Fiat 500 may not be as small as the original 500 from the 1950s, but the subcompact hatchback is one of the smallest vehicles offered in the U.S. Besides its tiny footprint that makes the 500 ideal for urbanites, the highly-customizable hatch puts retro styling, fun, and quirkiness first. Sure, the 500 may not have the same space as rivals or the same levels of comfort, but few can match the model in charm.

What's New for 2019

For 2019, the Fiat 500 gets some more standard equipment, which includes 16-inch wheels, performance brakes, a performance suspension, a rearview camera, body-color front and rear fascias, a spoiler, fog lights, and a “Turbo” badge. A new 1957 Retro Edition trim has been added to the lineup and dials the 500's retro theme up to 11.

Choosing Your Fiat 500

All Fiat 500 models are powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Every trim except for the high-performance Abarth comes with a turbocharged 1.4-liter inline-four that produces 135 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, while a six-speed automatic transmission is available for an extra $995. Move up to the Abarth, and you'll get a raucous variant of the 1.4-liter engine that cranks out 160 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque.

Thanks to its compact size, the 500 has impressive fuel economy figures. The EPA rates the vehicle to get up to 28 miles per gallon city, 33 mpg highway, and 30 combined. While these numbers aren't stellar, they're good for the segment.

Cargo space, as one would expect with such a tiny car, is limited to say the least. With the rear seats in place, you get 9.5 cubic feet of cargo space. Fold the rear seats down, and there's a more usable 30.1 cubic feet of space. Opt for a Cabrio (convertible) model, and you're looking at just 5.4 cubic feet of cargo space.

The 500 is available in four trims, each of which are available as a hatchback or a Cabrio for a $1,495 upcharge.

Pop

The 500 Pop starts at $17,740 (all prices include the $1,495 destination fee). Standard exterior features include 16-inch wheels, chrome door handles, fog lights, a rear spoiler, a “Turbo” badge, and body-color fascias. On the inside, the trim comes with power door locks and windows, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 7-inch cluster display, a 5-inch touchscreen display, FCA's Uconnect 3 system, two USB ports and cloth upholstery.

The Urbana Appearance Package ($695) adds 16-inch black aluminum wheels, Nero (black) trimmed lights, black interior trim, side sills ground effects, silver accent stitching, and sport cloth bucket seats. The Popular Equipment Package ($495) adds automatic climate control and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

The Adventure Package by Mopar ($435) includes an accessory receiver hitch and a roof rack, while the Navigation and Satellite Package ($695) adds navigation and one year of satellite radio. The Smoker's Group ($30) brings a cigar lighter and removable ash tray, and the All Weather Package by Mopar ($225) includes a cargo tray and front and rear rubber floor mats. Adding a black, red, or white roof costs $295. A Beats audio systems costs $695, while a sunroof is $795.

1957 Retro Edition

The 1957 Retro Edition carries a starting price tag of $21,240. Over the Pop, the 1957 Retro Edition adds retro “Fiat” badges, body-color, 16-inch retro wheels, a two-tone paint package, brown leather seats, heated side mirrors, heated front seats, satellite radio, retro ivory door trim, and a fixed glass roof.

There are no packages found here except the Smoker's Group and All Weather Package by Mopar. Optional features for the trim include the Beats audio system ($695), a power sunroof ($795), and navigation ($595).

Lounge

The Lounge trim costs $21,240 for the hatchback. Over the Pop, the Lounge adds chrome and power-heated side mirrors, bright belt moldings, side sills ground effects, heated front seats, memory settings for the front seats, satellite radio, and a fixed glass roof. Available packages and standalone features mimic the ones found on the 1957 Retro Edition.

Abarth

The range-topping 500 Abarth has a starting price of $21,990. Over the Lounge, the Abarth comes with the more powerful engine, three-mode electronic stability control, 16-inch black aluminum wheels, perforated cloth bucket seats, luxury floor mats, a perforated and leather-wrapped steering wheel, a leather-wrapped shift knob, unique “Abarth” badges, heated and body-color side mirrors, and a leather-wrapped instrument panel cluster brow.

Here, the Popular Equipment Package ($895) adds automatic climate control, heated front seats, and one year of satellite radio. The Scorpion Package with Roof Graphic ($395) includes an Abarth-badged fuel-filler door and license plate frame, a driver footrest, and Mopar wheel locks.

Four Abarth Roof packages that bring two-tone paint jobs are available in black, gray, red, or white. All cost $495 and also bring roof-color side mirrors. The Adventure Package by Mopar ($435), All Weather Package by Mopar ($225), and Smoker's Group ($30) are all available yet again, while you can get the Beats audio system and one year of satellite radio bundled together in the Beats Audio Package ($695).

Optional exterior features include two sets of 17-inch wheels ($1,395 each), colored mirror caps with a body side stripe ($295 each), and black-trimmed lights ($245). Navigation ($595) and the sunroof ($795) are still available.

CarsDirect Tip

If performance is your thing, the Abarth is the only way to go. If it isn't, our choice of the 2019 Fiat 500 lineup is the Pop trim. It still has the European flair and eccentric character that we've come to love about the 500, but is much more reasonably priced. Plus, other trims don't really add that many more features to justify the extra price.
