Overview

Fresh off last year's makeover, the 2019 Ford F-150 bounces back with something to offer everyone in the market for a full-size pickup. Dressed up or down, the F-150 comes off as a supremely capable rig that's thoroughly in tune with the times.

What's New for 2019

The line-topping Limited receives Ford's high-output 3.5-liter charged V6 engine, previously reserved for the Raptor. The Limited also gains a high-flow dual exhaust system and a restyled interior. The SYNC Connect suite of integrated smartphone apps is now standard on the mid-level XLT. Side step bars have been added to the XLT's Sport Appearance Package.

Ford F-150

Choosing Your Ford F-150

Like most large pickups, the 2019 F-150 comes in three body styles: the three-person Regular Cab, the SuperCab with a backseat and rear-hinged back doors, and the SuperCrew, featuring full-size rear doors and additional rear leg room. The Regular Cab comes standard with a 6.5-foot bed, and an eight-footer is available for $300. The SuperCab and SuperCrew get a 6.5-foot bed. A 5.5-foot bed is available on the SuperCrew at a credit of $1,305.

Engine choices start with a 3.3-liter V6, good for 290 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. The V6 delivers an EPA-estimated 19 miles per gallon city, 25 mpg highway, and 22 combined. With four-wheel drive, estimates ease to 18/23/20 mpg (city/highway/combined).

The available 2.7-liter turbocharged V6 produces 325 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. EPA ratings for the 2.7-liter are 20/26/22 mpg with rear-wheel drive, or 19/24/21 mpg with four-wheel drive. The optional 5.0-liter V8 also develops 400 lb-ft of torque, but hp increases to 395. With the V8 and rear-wheel drive, the F-150 is EPA-rated at 17/23/19 mpg. Adding four-wheel shaves one mpg off each category.

The top choice on most trims is a 3.5-liter turbo V6 with 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. So equipped, the F-150 can tow up to 13,200 pounds, and earns EPA ratings of 18/25/21 mpg with rear-wheel drive, or 17/23/19 mpg with four-wheel drive. A high-output version of the 3.5-liter (used on Raptor and Limited only) makes 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque.

For a balance of efficiency and power, Ford offers a 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel on some trims. The engine lays down 250 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque, enabling the F-150 to tow up to 11,400 pounds (just 200 shy of the V8). The turbodiesel delivers an EPA-estimated 22/30/25 mpg with rear-wheel drive, or 20/25/22 mpg with four-wheel drive.

All F-150 engines feature auto stop-start technology for enhanced efficiency. The base V6 is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, and the optional engines come with a 10-speed automatic.

Cab and engine availability varies by trim level:

Ford F-150

XL

Priced from $29,650 with the Regular Cab (all prices include the $1,495 destination fee), the XL comes standard with the 3.3-liter V6 engine, air conditioning, a four-speaker AM/FM stereo, a 4.2-inch central display, a rearview camera with hitching guidelines, and automatic emergency braking. Interiors receive cloth or vinyl seats and vinyl floor covering. The SuperCab ($33,735) and SuperCrew ($37,495) have split-folding rear seats and two additional audio speakers. All configurations are available with the 2.7-liter V6 ($995), 5.0-liter V8 ($1,995), or 3.5-liter V6 ($2,595). Four-wheel drive adds $4,460 to the XL (or $3,430 with certain configurations).

The 101A Package ($2,055) adds power windows and locks, a power tailgate lock, power mirrors, cruise control, keyless entry, Bluetooth, smartphone integration, and Ford's SYNC voice control system. The Chrome Appearance Package ($775) tacks on chrome bumpers, silver aluminum wheels, fog lights, and a body-color front fascia. The Sport Appearance Package, also $775, provides the same upgrades, except the bumpers are body color instead of chrome. The SXT Appearance Package ($1,995) is available on SuperCab and CrewCab models equipped with any of the optional engines. SXT features include 20-inch machined aluminum wheels, body-color bumpers and exterior accents, a rear window defogger, fog lights, privacy glass, and front sport seats with lumbar adjustment. Buyers also get an upgraded infotainment interface called SYNC 3, which offers an eight-inch touchscreen and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Many of the XL's package features are available in smaller bundles or as individual options.

Ford F-150

XLT

Starting at $35,655 in Regular Cab form, the XLT comes standard with the XL's 101A Package, a keypad entry system, rear privacy glass, lumbar seat adjustments, carpeting, alloy wheels, additional interior storage, and chrome bumpers and exterior trim. The SuperCab and SuperCrew start at $38,535 and $42,220, respectively. The optional engines are priced the same as on the XL, and four-wheel drive adds $3,430 from this trim forward (or slightly less with some engines).

The 301A Package ($2,100) includes a power driver seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, power-adjustable pedals, a seven-speaker sound system with satellite radio, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated side mirrors, and a rear under-seat storage system. The $4,345 302A Package (not available on Regular Cab) includes all of the 301A features, plus remote start, heated front seats with passenger power, rear parking sensors, SYNC 3, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and additional chrome exterior trim. Individual options for the XLT include blind-spot monitoring ($590), navigation ($795), and rear parking sensors ($275).

Ford F-150

Lariat

Available in SuperCab ($43,195) and SuperCrew ($45,855) configurations, the Lariat comes standard with the 2.7-liter V6 turbo, heated and ventilated front seats with driver memory, leather upholstery, push-button ignition, dual-zone automatic climate control, and ambient interior lighting. The 3.0-liter turbodiesel becomes available at this level for $4,000. The 3.5-liter turbo drops to $1,600, and the V8 to $1,000.

The optional 501A Package ($1,585) adds remote start and tailgate release, LED side mirrors spotlights, rear parking sensors, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. The 502A Package ($7,050) has all that, plus front bucket seats with power lumbar adjustment, a heated power-adjustable steering wheel, automatic wipers with de-icers, LED headlights, heated rear seats (SuperCrew), navigation, a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, and additional chrome exterior trim. There's also a $1,195 Technology Package with lane keeping assist, a surround-view camera system, and an automated parking system. Major standalone options include adaptive cruise control ($1,250), a panoramic sunroof for the SuperCrew ($1,495), and a Special Edition Package ($1,995) for the V8 SuperCrew with a striking gray and red color scheme.

Ford F-150

King Ranch

The $53,885 King Ranch (SuperCrew only) gets the 5.0-liter V8 as standard, along with a Southwestern design theme that includes a two-tone exterior, unique wheels, and exclusive leather trim inside. The 3.5-liter turbo is a $600 option, and the 3.0-liter turbodiesel adds $3,000. Standard equipment is similar to the Lariat SuperCrew with the 502A Package. The 601A Package ($3,725) for the King Ranch adds power running boards, tailgate lift assist, rear seat belt airbags, and 20-inch "Caribou" wheels. The Technology Package, adaptive cruise control, and the panoramic sunroof remain optional.

Ford F-150

Platinum

The Platinum SuperCrew ($56,415) is equipped like the King Ranch, but with an urban luxury vibe. Unique touches include wood and aluminum interior trim, a satin-chrome grille, and standard power running boards. Most remaining features are available in the 701A Package ($2,340), which includes all available safety technology and a tailgate-mounted access step. Like the King Ranch, the Platinum comes standard with the 5.0-liter V8 engine, and the 3.5-liter turbo and 3.0-liter turbodiesel are optional.

All models up to this trim level equipped with the 3.5-liter engine are eligible for a Max Trailer Tow Package ($895 to $1,295). The bundle includes a wiring harness, a Class IV hitch receiver, an auxiliary transmission oil cooler, a beefier front stabilizer bar, and a 36-gallon gas tank. There's also an X4 Off-Road Package ($905) available on four-wheel-drive models that adds hill descent control, underbody skid plates, an electronic-locking rear axle, off-road front shocks, and a floor liner.

Ford F-150

Limited

The Limited SuperCrew ($68,630) carries the 450-hp version of the 3.5-liter V6 turbo, plus 22-inch wheels, upgraded leather upholstery, and extra chrome detailing outside. Nearly all available comfort and convenience features are standard, including the panoramic sunroof. Four-wheel drive is only major factory option.

Ford F-150

Raptor

The Raptor SuperCab ($54,350) and SuperCrew ($57,335) are designed for off-road performance. To that end, every example gets the high-output 3.5-liter turbo, an upgraded four-wheel-drive system, a reinforced frame, a long-travel suspension, skid plates, all-terrain tires, and more aggressive trim throughout. Standard convenience features are similar to the XLT.

The 801A Package ($3,105) adds power front seats with heat, leather upholstery, power-adjustable pedals, and a power-sliding rear window. In addition to those features, the 802A Package ($9,365) offers ventilated front seats with driver memory, the Bang & Olufsen sound system, surround-view camera, and a limited-slip front differential. The Technology Package ($1,695) brings in lane keeping assist, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, and automatic wipers with de-icers. Special graphics are available on the bed sides ($1,075) and hood ($900). The Interior Color Accent Package ($2,395) adds blue upholstery inserts, matching door and dash appliques, and aluminium dash trim.

America's favorite for a reason. The F-150 is the unrivaled leader of the American sales charts. In 2018, over 900,000 units of F-Series were sold, with the brunt of those going to the light-duty F-150. That number may seem a bit absurd, but Ford's carryall really is a champion at what it does. Be it hauling, towing, or just plain old commuting, the 2019 Ford F-150 is impressively adept.

Breadth of available powertrains. Part of the F-150's segment dominance can no doubt be attributed to the wide variety of engine options that are available across most trims. Ford offers no less than six distinct powertrains, giving consumers more choice as to what's under the hood than all competitors except the Chevrolet Silverado.

The engine to avoid is the gutless 3.3-liter naturally-aspirated V6 which anchors the two base trims. Above that, there's a pair of twin-turbocharged sixes built under the EcoBoost moniker. Most will be satisfied by the 325-horsepower, 2.7-liter motor, but the 375-hp, 3.5-liter is there for those demanding maximum power and capability. A diesel six, traditional V8, and a high-output 3.5-liter V6 round out the choices.

It's a comprehensive roster, and most engines are available on most trims. The result is a mix and match bonanza that goes beyond what's offered by the competition. Look across town and this becomes clear: the new Ram is only offered with a V8, a V6, and a V6 diesel. Chevy does in fact match Ford with six total choices, but isn't as generous as to what engine can be had where. For variety, technological advancement, and outright power, the Ford comes out on top.

Impressive capability. Traditional truck buyers might cast a wary eye on the F-150's heavily-turbocharged engine lineup. After all, how could a measly 3.5 liters out-tow or out-carry GM's 6.2-liter V8 or Ram's Hemi V8? In a segment where there's still no replacement for displacement, it's easy to doubt the ability of a gasoline turbo-six to get the job done.

But to do that would be to bet on the wrong horse. The F-150's 3.5-liter V6 doesn't just keep up with the big V8s it competes with – it in fact triumphs over them. Maximum towing capacity for a properly-equipped F-150 is 13,200 pounds. The new Ram, meanwhile, can pull up to 12,750 pounds, while the Chevy will tug along 12,200 pounds. Ford's own 5.0-liter V8 is rated for a maximum 11,200 pounds.

In the payload department, the 3.5-liter engine is again the top dog, hauling up to 3,230 pounds. It's an easy victory over the second-place Chevrolet (2,485 pounds) and the third-place Ram (2,300 pounds). The Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan top out somewhere below the one-ton mark, though it has been some time since these foreign full-sizers have been competitive in the towing and payload race.

Ford F-150

Competitive ride and comfort. Besides being able to work hard, trucks must also be comfortable and commutable. Despite being long as a bridge and as wide as Kansas, the F-150 excels at both of these tasks.

It's not just the schmancy King Ranches and Limiteds that are exceptionally good at providing everyday comfort and convenience. Hop into an lower trim like an XLT and the standard power amenities and Sync infotainment system make it feel like an supersized version of a Camry. Factor in the surprisingly hushed cabin and easy ergonomic controls and the comparison only becomes more apt.

Higher end trims add all sorts of gadgets, with the top-spec trucks boasting full leather interiors with contrasting stitching, power running boards, 10-speaker stereos, and more. Quality as well as fit and finish won't impress anyone coming from a Mercedes-Benz, but these higher-tier variants are nonetheless pretty posh places to spend time in.

The other domestic trucks, though, aren't slacking with their interiors, either. The new Ram is particularly impressive, both in quality of materials and feature count. With an available 19-speaker audio system and the biggest-in-class touchscreen, not to mention the slew of optional active-safety features, it's undeniably the nicer-appointed truck.

The Silverado's interior isn't quite as nice as the Ram but does run a tight race with the Ford. The winner will come down to what trim a buyer wants and what brand they're allegiant to. On the more affordable trims the arch-rivals are fairly equal; get to the upper end of the lineup and the Ford is nicer.

Final thoughts. Ford isn't dumb. Their bottom line isn't simply bolstered by the F-150, but dependent on it. Spin off the F-Series as a separate company and it would score a spot among America's top-selling brands while also taking with it almost 40 percent of Ford's yearly sales volume. Maintaining this level of success doesn't happen by resting on the laurels of nameplate equity. It means consistently building the best product possible and striving to set benchmarks instead of merely meeting them.

Spend some time with Ford's cash cow and it's clear that this is the case. Here's a truck that comes in more varieties than Ben and Jerry's ice cream, heralds class-leading capabilities, and is offered with powertrains more advanced and more powerful than any V8 available in this class.

In a very competitive segment, the 2019 Ford F-150 keeps up with or outpaces the best from Ram and Chevrolet. Don't be surprised when Ford sells another 900,000 units in 2019.
