2019 Genesis G80 OVERVIEW

Genesis is continuing its march on the fortress of luxury badges. Back with new packages to complement its trim lineup, the 2019 Genesis G80 remains a strong value pick among mid-size luxury sedans.

What's New for 2019

The two upgrades for 2019 are a new Sport exterior package and a fresh base infotainment system. Otherwise, the G80 carries over unchanged.

Choosing Your Genesis G80

Choosing a G80 trim starts with choosing an engine. The base choice is a 3.8-liter V6 delivering 311 horsepower and 293 pound-feet of torque. New last year, the middle engine is a twin-turbocharged 3.3-liter V6 with 365 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque. Topping off the range is a hulking 5.0-liter V8 producing 420 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque (as long as it’s filled up with premium fuel). All three engines run through an eight-speed automatic transmission with a manual-shift mode and an available shift-by-wire system. Rear- or all-wheel drive are available on all engines, with the latter costing $2,500 extra.

As is to be expected with large gas engines, fuel economy isn’t exceptional. The base engine is the best of the three, achieving an EPA-estimated 18 miles per gallon city, 26 mpg highway, and 21 combined. The twin-turbo engine gets close at 17/25/20 mpg (city/highway/combined), and the V8 is the thirstiest at 16/24/19 mpg. All-wheel drive drops fuel economy an mpg or two in most cases.

Genesis makes a point of including comprehensive standard equipment, and the G80 is no exception. Standard safety equipment includes automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane keeping assist, driver attention warning, automatic high beams, and rain-sensing wipers. Luxury touches like leather upholstery and push-button start are also standard, along with a hands-free trunk, push-button start, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Cargo space is respectable at 15.3 cubic feet, but the rear seat doesn't fold down.

The remaining features are divided across the three trims, which correspond to the three engine sizes:

3.8

Starting at $43,045 (all prices include the $995 destination fee), the base G80 comes well equipped. Headlights are bi-Xenon units, side mirrors are heated and auto-dimming, and rims are 18-inch alloys. The front seats are leather, heated, and 12-way power adjustable. A leather-wrapped steering wheel is standard, and Genesis throws in a heated wheel with all-wheel drive models. Infotainment runs through a central eight-inch touchscreen with navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and multiple USB ports.

Two packages subdivide this trim level. The first is the new Sport Package ($5,700), which adds 19-inch wheels, aggressive styling accents, a chrome grille and window trim, sport pedals, a sport steering wheel, a surround-view camera, a panoramic sunroof, an upgraded 14-speaker sound system, a seven-inch digital driver display, wireless charging, parking distance warnings, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and rear sunshades.

If that’s still not enough luxury, the Ultimate Package ($9,950) adds a shift-by-wire system, full LED headlights and fog lights, Nappa leather upholstery, the sunroof, wood and aluminum trim, a color head-up display, a carbon dioxide sensor, a heated steering wheel, an upgraded 9.2-inch touchscreen, and all the comfort features of the Sport Package (with an even larger 17-speaker sound system).

3.3T Sport

For a starting price of $56,245, Genesis will swap in the twin-turbo 3.3-liter V6. In addition to the power boost, the G80 Sport gets 19-inch wheels, an adaptive sport suspension, ventilated brakes, and sharp exterior accents like tinted taillight covers and dark chrome. The interior sees sport front seats, suede headliner, and carbon fiber trim. The 3.3T Sport trim comes standard with all of the features from the 3.8’s Ultimate Package. As a result, no packages or options (other than the usual exterior/interior colors) are available.

5.0 Ultimate

For the full luxury experience, the G80 5.0 starts at $57,995. It gets the powerful V8 engine along with its own exclusive 19-inch wheels. A couple of unique interior touches (like wood finish) are standard, but, otherwise, the 5.0 resembles the 3.3T Sport. Likewise, there are no significant packages or standalone options available.

CarsDirect Tip

The 2019 Genesis G80 3.3T Sport is exciting enough, but don’t expect it to match the driving dynamics of the German titans. Instead, opt for a G80 3.8 with the desired package and enjoy comprehensive luxury at a bargain price.
