The market for flagship luxury sedans is traditionally owned by a few power players. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7-Series, and Audi A8 are tech-filled industry leaders. Since it spun off from parent brand Hyundai in 2015, Genesis has been on a mission to shake up the status quo. The 2019 Genesis G90 remains its weapon of choice – a bona fide luxury experience for thousands less than the big badges.
What's New for 2019
The Genesis G90 returns unchanged for 2019.
Choosing Your Genesis G90
Choice in a G90 runs along two axes: engine and drivetrain.
The drivetrain is available in either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive on any trim, with the latter being a $2,500 option. All G90s send power to the wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.
There are two choices for the engine, too. The first is a 3.3-liter twin-turbocharged V6 producing 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque. If that’s not enough power, Genesis will swap in a 5.0-liter V8 with 420 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. Mileage isn’t as far apart as you might expect – the V6 gets an EPA-estimated 17 miles per gallon city, 24 mpg highway, and 20 combined, while the V8 manages 16/24/19 mpg (city/highway/combined). All-wheel drive drops all three categories by one for the V8, but the V6 remains the same.
Otherwise, the only real decisions to make are exterior and interior color. The G90 doesn’t offer much customization, focusing instead on an enviable set of base features. These are distributed between two trims, which correspond to the two engine choices: 3.3T Premium or 5.0 Ultimate.
3.3T Premium
Take a deep breath, because even on the base G90 the list of standard features is staggering. The starting price is $69,345 (all prices include the $995 destination charge), and there are no option packages, but it’s hard to be mad when the kit is comprehensive.
To begin with the exterior, buyers get cornering LED headlights, heated and powered auto-dimming side mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, 19-inch chrome rims, and a dual exhaust system. The interior ups the ante with Nappa leather upholstery, microfiber suede headliner, heated and ventilated front seats with memory settings, heated rear seats, a heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel, wood trim, a seven-inch LCD driver display, a full-color head-up display, seven-color ambient lighting, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, automatic three-zone climate control, and an auto-defog windshield.
Infotainment, complete with navigation, is viewed on a 12.3-inch color display and accompanied by a 17-speaker Lexicon sound system. The Genesis Connected Service suite allows remote start and climate adjustment, and amenities include wireless charging, front and rear USB ports, and a hands-free phone system.
In addition to four different drive modes, the Genesis smooths out the ride with an adaptive suspension and electronic damping control. Safety features include adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, driver attention alerts, front and rear parking sensors, and a surround-view camera.
Capping it all off are a few quality-of-life upgrades like power door closure, a gesture-controlled trunk lid, push-button start, acoustic glass, a sunroof, and power rear and side sunshades.
5.0 Ultimate
For $73,845, buyers can get a G90 with a V8 under the hood. The extra power is nice, but the real upgrades come in the rear seat. Two 10.3-inch screens decorate the seatbacks for a rear entertainment system. The rear seats are 12- and 14-way power adjustable, both with ventilation, power headrests, and memory settings. Both seats also get illuminated vanity mirrors.
Which 2019 Genesis G90 you choose comes down to one question: do you prefer to drive, or be driven? If you prefer a leather-clad wheel at your fingertips, opt for the Premium. If your chauffeur manages the controls, the extra rear-seat comfort in the Ultimate is worth the cash.
