Model Preview

The Hyundai Santa Fe XL is the new name for the 7-passenger Santa Fe crossover for the 2019 model year. The vehicle will feature a completely new design inside and out that's considerably bolder than the previous generation.

The exterior of the XL offers an updated visual style first introduced by the much smaller Kona crossover. Notable similarities include a new signature grille and slim daytime running lights. In back, the XL's wide stance could be mistaken for a BMW or INFINITI at a distance.

Inside, the vehicle gets a new infotainment screen akin to the recently updated Elantra GT that sits on the dash as opposed to being embedded inside of it. Like most Hyundais, the XL will come standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Further up the lineup, buyers can get the automaker's latest navigation system as well as wireless charging capabilities when a compatible device is present. Other upscale choices include a 630-watt Infinity stereo system with 12 speakers and enhanced surround sound.

Vehicles equipped with the brand's Blue Link telematics system get 3 years of complimentary access to connected services. This offers the ability to connect with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant via a smartphone app to do things like remotely lock or unlock the doors, request roadside assistance, remotely start the vehicle or engage the climate control system.

Under-the-hood specs for the XL have not yet been announced. However, it's a good bet that Hyundai's current 3.3-liter V6 will likely continue to be the only choice of engine. That's in contrast to the 2019 Santa Fe, which will be offered with 3 choices: a 2.4-liter making 184 hp, a 2.0-liter turbo making 232 hp or a new 2.2-liter turbodiesel making 200 hp but 320 lb-ft of torque. We'll update this page once Hyundai announces official powertrain info.

Safety features have not yet been detailed in full. Expect to see the same sort of technology available in the current vehicle, which includes automatic emergency braking, blind spot warning, lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control. At the moment, there are no indications that any of these features will become standard.

The most notable safety improvement will be a new option to encourage rear-seat safety by honking the horn and flashing the headlights if the driver exits the vehicle and leaves someone in the back seat. The feature is meant to reduce the likelihood that a child or pet is accidentally locked inside.

Pricing & Release Date

The 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe XL will go on sale this summer.

Official pricing has not yet been announced. For reference, the current Santa Fe SE ranges from $31,830 including destination to as high as $42,280 for the Limited Ultimate.

That equates to about a $5,900 premium compared to the current Santa Fe Sport. Although we expect a modest price increase for 2019, we believe Hyundai will aim to keep the XL affordable with a base price under $33,000.

Key competitors include the Ford Explorer, Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot.
