Unlike other websites and magazines, our ratings are not based solely on a singular road test, but rather a more encompassing batch of criteria: quality, safety, comfort, performance, fuel economy, reliability history and value. When comparing vehicles using our Rating System, it's important to note that the rating earned by each vehicle correlates only to the models within its class. For example, a compact car cannot be compared to a SUV—They are different vehicles altogether.

You can interpret our ratings in the following way:

5-Star: Outstanding vehicle. Only the most exceptional vehicles achieve this rating.

4-Star: Very Good vehicle. Very good and close to being the best vehicle in its class.

3-Star: Good vehicle. Decent, but not quite the best. Often affordable, but lacking key features found in vehicles of the same class.

2-Star: Below average vehicle. Not recommended, and lacking attributes a car buyer would come to expect for the price.

1-Star: Poor vehicle. Simply does not deserve to be on the road.

2019 Land Rover Discovery Sport OVERVIEW

The 2019 Land Rover Discovery Sport is the most affordable way to get into one of the brand's upscale, off-road-friendly vehicles. While celebrities and Hollywood's elite gravitate toward the Land Rover Range Rover, the Discovery Sport continues to be one of the brand's best-selling models. With its off-roading prowess, the Discovery Sport sits in a league with only a few competitors. The SUV's agreeable levels of comfort and convenience are also pleasant surprises when considering how capable the machine is when the road gets rough.

What's New for 2019

The Discovery Sport mainly carries over unchanged from last year. Major news for 2019 is the addition of the Landmark Edition that's meant to mark the brand's history of selling approximately 350,000 Discovery Sport SUVs since its inception in 2014. The trim is available in unique exterior colors and has a contrasting roof. The Landmark Edition also has some bespoke interior touches. Besides the new trim, the only other change for the Discovery Sport is the all-new multi-link rear axle.

Choosing Your Land Rover Discovery Sport

The Discovery Sport is available in four trims and can be fitted with one of two engines. Both of the available engines are turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder units, but the standard output is 237 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque. A more powerful version of the engine is rated to make 286 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque and is available on the HSE and HSE Luxury trims. A nine-speed automatic transmission is standard, as is all-wheel drive.

Land Rovers are known for being able to traverse rough terrain, while ensuring that passengers are treated to a serene ride. To that end, the SUV features Terrain Response that sees the vehicle alter various components depending on what surface you're driving over. Hill Descent Control (HDC) is also included, and helps drivers tackle steep declines. Hill-start assist and All-Terrain Progress Control, which aid the vehicle in crawling forward at a speed that's specified by the driver, are also available.

Despite its small size, the Discovery Sport is available in a five-plus-two layout that allows it to seat up to seven. The SUV's tall design also allows it to hold an impressive amount of cargo: 34.6 cubic feet with the rear seats in place and 62.75 cubic feet in total.

SE

The most affordable Discovery Sport is the SE trim, which starts at $38,790 (all prices include the $995 destination charge). Standard exterior features for the SE trim include rain-sensing wipers, heated exterior mirrors with approach lights, 18-inch alloy wheels, and daytime running lights. On the inside, the trim comes with ambient interior lighting, two-zone climate control, three USB ports, partial leather seats, 10-way power front seats, 60/40-split second-row seats, an eight-inch touchscreen, a 10-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, and a heated rear windscreen.

There are eight available packages for the Discovery Sport. The Black Exterior Accents package ($410) adds black trim pieces to the exterior. The Black Design Pack ($715) includes Gloss Black 18-inch wheels and the black exterior touches. The Black Design Pack including contrast roof ($920) comes with a black contrast roof, black exterior touches, and Gloss Black 18-inch wheels.

The Vision Assist Package ($820) brings some features that should make it easier to see the road at night, including front fog lights and Xenon headlights with signature LED lights. The Audio Upgrade Package ($820) comes with a Meridian Sound System and SiriusXM Satellite Radio and a HD radio.

The Convenience Package ($1,125) adds an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a powered gesture tailgate, keyless entry, and a garage door opener. The Cold Climate Package ($1,330) comes with heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and a heated windscreen. Lastly, the Row 3 Package ($1,785) brings a third row with two seats, rear cooling vents, and an additional USB.

Notable standalone options include blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert ($510), navigation ($820) and a WiFi hotspot ($370).

HSE

The HSE starts at $43,390, while adding the 286-hp engine is an extra $7,000. Over the base SE trim, the HSE comes with front and rear parking sensors, Xenon headlights with LED signature lights, auto-dimming exterior mirrors with memory, perforated grained leather seats, 12-way power front seats, a garage door opener, a powered gesture tailgate, front fog lights, and keyless entry as standard.

The HSE has a lot of the same optional packages as the SE trim, including: Black Exterior Accents ($410), Black Design Pack ($715), Black Design Pack including contrast roof ($920), Audio Upgrade Package ($820), and Row 3 Package ($1,785).

The Black Design Pack – 19-inch Alloy Wheel Package ($1,225) comes with gloss black 19-inch wheels and the Black Design Package. The Black Design Pack including contrast roof ($1,430) adds the Black Design Package, a black contrast roof, and 19-inch Gloss Black wheels.

The Driver Assist Plus Pack ($1,125) brings high-tech safety features to the SUV including automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist, a driver condition monitor, traffic sign recognition, and navigation. The Cold Climate Package costs $1,635 and includes heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and a heated windscreen. The Intelligent Dynamics Package ($1,735) adds active driveline, which allows drivers to keep the vehicle in two-wheel-drive mode for added fuel efficiency, and adaptive and configurable dynamics.

The Head-up Display and Park Assist Package ($1,840) comes with a head-up display and park assist. The Vision Assist Package ($1,940) adds auto high beam assist, a surround-view camera system, adaptive Xenon headlights with LED signature lights, reverse traffic detection, and blind-spot monitoring. The Driver Assist Plus Package ($3,825) includes automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist, a driver condition monitor, traffic sign recognition, navigation pro, a Meridian surround sound system, Pro Services, and a WiFi hotspot. Lastly, the Complete Dynamic Design Package costs $5,100 and brings a bespoke exterior design and interior touches and 20-inch Gloss Black wheels.

Landmark Edition

The Landmark Edition starts at $45,790. The SUV comes with bespoke 19-inch wheels, a Graphite Atlas grille, a Carpathian Gray panoramic contrast roof, Ebony headlining, and navigation. Available packages match ones that are offered on the HSE trim, minus the availability of the Black Design-themed packages.

HSE Luxury

The HSE Luxury trim is the range-topping Discovery Sport and starts at $47,790 for the 237-hp engine and $53,890 for the 286-hp motor. Configurable mood lighting, 10-way Windsor leather seats with memory, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, a HD radio, Touch Pro Navigation, InControl Apps, illuminated metal treadplates, lane keeping assist, and a driver condition monitor are standard over the regular HSE trim. Optional packages on the HSE Luxury trim are similar to the ones offered on the HSE trim.

CarsDirect Tip

While the Landmark Edition looks really good with its contrast roof, the HSE trim strikes the ideal spot with its list of standard features. The 287-hp engine adds impressive performance to the SUV, but it's pricey at an extra $7,000 (or $6,100 on the HSE Luxury), so we'd skip that motor. We really think the 2019 Land Rover Discovery Sport should come with heated front seats as standard, but, alas, it doesn't, making the Cold Climate Package a must. The Driver Assist Plus Pack and Intelligent Dynamics Package are two other packages that are worth exploring.
