In 2018, Land Rover finally split the gap between the Range Rover Evoque and Sport lineups with the Jaguar F-Pace-based Range Rover Velar. Can the 2019 Land Rover Range Rover Velar hit the mark, or are there too many compromises to make this 'tweener a good buy?

Best Value

There are virtually countless variations one can get in the 2019 Land Rover Range Rover Velar, but one trim stands out as a value leader in this complex lineup: the S. Not only does the buyer get the legendary Land Rover nameplate, but they also receive all the luxury that should come with such a premium name.

The S trim level includes 19-inch wheels, premium LED headlights with signature daytime running lights, perforated leather seats, an 11-speaker sound system with 380 watts, Navigation Pro, traffic-sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, and much more.

Performance

Land Rover Range Rover Velar

There's an engine for just about any buyer in the 2019 Range Rover Velar lineup, and each one serves a specific purpose. The base 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine pumps out 247 horsepower and delivers a 6.4-second sprint to 60 mph while keeping the base price reasonable. The optional 3.0-liter supercharged V6 pipes in 380 hp and a 5.3-second sprint. For the green-minded buyer, the 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine delivers an 8.4-second sprint to 60 mph and up to 30 miles per gallon highway, according to the EPA.

With its off-road roots, buyers expect the Range Rover Velar to offer plenty of off-the-beaten-path credentials. It does just that with an air suspension that delivers up to 9.9 inches of ground clearance. Plus, it can tow up to a 5,500-pound trailer with its optional V6 engine.

Though the Range Rover Velar is a close relative to the sporty Jaguar F-Pace, it lacks the cornering prowess of the mighty Jag. Of course, this is no mistake, as the F-Pace and Range Rover Velar have vastly different client bases.

Style

The 2019 Range Rover Velar is arguably the best-looking crossovers on the road today. Not only does it pull off being luxurious and capable, it does so with a subtle design void of large, blocky grilles, shiny wheels, and excessive chrome accents.

Inside, the toned-down looks continue with a smooth dash that boasts a pair of logical touchscreens and minimal physical buttons to clutter things up. Beyond being sleek, the interior is also comfortable for up to five adults thanks to its well-padded seats and over 37 inches of rear-seat leg room.

In an odd twist, though, Land Rover offers cloth in the 2019 Range Rover Velar, but it comes at a premium. Last time we checked, leather seating costs more than cloth, so we’re not sure what Land Rover’s angle is here.

The Best and Worst Things

The wild combination of luxury, off-road ability, style, and straight-line performance makes the Range Rover Velar one of the best do-it-all utility vehicles in the luxury market.

But it gets super expensive in a hurry, and Land Rover even charges to switch to cloth seats.

Right For? Wrong For?

Land Rover Range Rover Velar

The 2019 Land Rover Range Rover Velar is the perfect bridge vehicle between the too-small Range Rover Evoque and the pricey Range Rover Sport. This gives midrange luxury crossover buyers a great, non-German option with some off-road credentials.

Buyers looking for a true performance utility vehicle won't find it in the Range Rover Velar. Sure, it looks the part, but its off-road-tuned suspension isn't comfortable with quick maneuvers on pavement.

The Bottom Line

The 2019 Land Rover Range Rover Velar is a great option for buyers who want a crossover that does everything well. It may not please every buyer, but it will please most. Just use care when adding options, as it can get very expensive in a hurry.
