  • 2019 Maserati Ghibli Overview

    Willis Kuelthau
    Automotive Editor - October 17, 2018

Stylish and suave, the 2019 Maserati Ghibli provides an alternative to the Teutonic status quo. Its shared bloodline with Chrysler cheapens the feel a tad, but this is still an Italian car that's athletic, luxurious, and full of personality.

    What's New for 2019

The only changes to the 2019 Ghibli are aesthetic: new colors, new rim choices, a new gear-shift lever, and a few styling tweaks.

    Choosing Your Maserati Ghibli

Maserati Ghiblis all house a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine. In base form, this engine pumps out 345 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. The uprated S version produces 424 hp and 428 lb-ft. Both run through an eight-speed automatic transmission, but only the latter is available with all-wheel drive as the SQ4 for an extra $2,500. Fuel economy is nearly identical for all three configurations, with the base setup getting an EPA-estimated 17 miles per gallon city, 24 mpg highway, and 19 combined. The uprated engine achieves 16/24/19 mpg (city/highway/combined).

The other axis of choice in the Ghibli lineup is trim. Maserati’s trim structure is blessedly simple: choose a powertrain, then choose one of three available trims. All engines and drivetrains are available with all trims, and each trim has a clear personality.

Those trims are: base Ghibli, GranLusso, and GranSport.

Starting at $76,475 (all prices include a $1,495 destination charge), the cheapest Ghibli is still a palace compared to many cars. Opting for the Ghibli S bumps starting price to $81,475, while the SQ4 will set buyers back $83,975.

Bi-Xenon headlights glare out from the front, while 19-inch aluminum wheels spice up the profile. The seats are upholstered in leather, and the front row is heated. An 8.4-inch touchscreen controls infotainment, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard. A rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, and blind-spot monitoring round out the safety features. As befits the stylish design, a baffling array of exterior and interior colors are available for customization.

The Base trim allows two packages. The Driver Assistance Package ($1,590) ramps up the active safety tech, adding adaptive cruise control, a surround-view camera, traffic sign recognition, highway assist, collision warnings, and automatic emergency braking. The Climate Package ($550) adds heated washer nozzles, heated rear seats, and a power rear window shade.

Standalone options are also plentiful. Notable additions include a Harman Kardon sound system ($990), extended leather upholstery ($950), premium perforated leather ($3,190), a heated steering wheel ($490), paddle shifters ($550), and a hands-free trunk ($490).

The GranLusso prioritizes luxury and comfort, bumping starting costs to $82,475 for a Ghibli, $86,775 for a Ghibli S, and $89,275 for a Ghibli SQ4. The exterior gets chrome inserts, adaptive LED headlights, and black brake calipers, while the interior sees perforated leather, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated wood-and-leather steering wheel, and a Harman Kardon sound system.

The packages remain the same as the base trim, but the à-la-carte menu sees some new options. These include an even-more-premium Bowers & Wilkins sound system ($1,990), power-adjustable pedals ($400), and a rear armrest with a USB port and outlet ($140).

The prices of the GranSport trim are identical to the GranLusso – $82,475, $86,775, and $89,275, respectively – but with a decidedly different personality. The GranSport plays to Maserati’s performance heritage, adding unique front and rear fascia, 20-inch aluminum wheels, glossy red brake calipers, a performance suspension with electronic damping, 12-way power sport seats, a sport steering wheel, paddle shifters, adaptive LED headlights, and a Harman Kardon sound system.

While the Driver Assistance and Climate Packages remain, GranSport Ghiblis see a third option. The Interior Carbon Fiber Package ($2,570) lives up to its name by covering the paddle shifters, door sills, trim, and steering wheel in carbon fiber.

The carbon fiber steering wheel is available as a standalone option for $690, as are a heated steering wheel ($90), natural leather upholstery ($4,190), a full carbon-fiber exterior kit ($2,990), soft-close doors ($590), and the remaining standalone options from the other trims.

    CarsDirect Tip

Despite the many customization options, Maseratis aren't simply about luxury or comfort. This is a car best appreciated from the driver’s seat. The GranSport trim is the 2019 Maserati Ghibli at its fullest, preferably with the uprated engine. It’s more expensive, but if you’re buying a Maserati, you’re probably not doing it for the value – the Ghibli is about the experience.
