Model Preview

Mazda been teasing it for the past few weeks, but the redesigned 2019 Mazda3 is finally here. Unsurprisingly, this redesign is not revolutionary, but it is a significant modernization of a model that was already ahead of its time.

With just a quick glance at the 2019 Mazda3, it’s easy to overlook the fact Mazda completely redesigned it, but a longer look will expose the major updates compared to the previous-generation Mazda3. Mazda lifted this evolution of the Kodo design language straight from the 2015 Vision Coupe concept and slapped it on its popular compact rig. This gives the Mazda3 a sleeker, more mature look in its hatchback and sedan bodies while giving them two separate styling angles.

The Mazda3 hatchback takes on what Mazda calls a “solid mass” design. The goal was to make the two-box hatchback design appear as if Mazda carved it from one block of metal, It achieves this with its smooth flow from the long hood to the raked windshield and back to the chunky C-pillar. The sedan’s design goal was to be sleek and elegant, a la the new-generation Mazda6. It achieves this with its smooth, continuous line that flows effortlessly from nose to tall.

Inside, Mazda went with an extreme horizontal orientation to make it feel wider and took a less-is-more approach with buttons and other interfaces. This gives the Mazda3’s cabin a simple but elegant look that generally comes from more premium brands. It also gains an extra 0.8 inches of telescoping in the steering column, a repositioned gear shifter, a simplified Active Driving Display, a larger 8.8-inch infotainment screen with simpler operation, and minimized blind spots to make the new Mazda3 even more driver-friendly.

Buyers will find new audio systems, including a standard eight-speaker system and an optional 12-speaker Bose sound system. Beyond being loaded with speakers for optimal sound, Mazda also used sound research to place bass speakers in areas that help balance the overall sound.

The global Mazda3 lineup will feature five engine options. The gasoline options will include 1.5-liter, 2.0-liter, and 2.5-liter SKYACTIV-G engines; the diesel option will be a 1.8-liter four-cylinder; and there will be a new SKYACTIV-X hybrid. There are no details on these engines’ outputs and which will make it to the U.S., but it’s safe to assume the 2.0- and 2.5-liter units will return, and the hybrid may find its way to U.S. showrooms. The 2019 Mazda3 will also gain an evolved i-Active all-wheel drive, but Mazda hasn’t announced its availability in the U.S.

The current Mazda3 is an IIHS Top Safety Pick, and it missed being a Top Safety Pick+ because its lack of a passenger-side small-overlap test and its “Acceptable” headlight rating. In the 2019 Mazda3, we expect at least a Top Safety Pick rating. Its new available safety features will include infrared camera- and LED-based driver-drowsiness alert, front cross-traffic alert, and Cruising & Traffic Support that reduces fatigue by handling acceleration, braking, and steering in heavy traffic.

Expect a full review closer to launch.

Pricing & Release Date

There is no concrete on-sale date for the all-new 2019 Mazda3, but Mazda announced it’ll be in showrooms in early 2019.

Pricing also remains unknown, but we expect a slight increase relative to the 2019 Mazda3, which ranges from $20,040 to $27,440 (destination fees included).

The 2019 Mazda3 will compete with the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, and Hyundai Elantra.
