2019 Toyota Avalon Hybrid OVERVIEW

Those in search of fuel efficiency in their daily commuter should consider the 2019 Toyota Avalon Hybrid. It's a sporty-looking, full-size, four-door sedan that stands tall in a growing sea of competition. With an EPA-estimated 43 miles per gallon combined, and offered in three, highly-customizable trims, the 2019 Toyota Avalon Hybrid is a great option for those searching for a well-equipped daily driver.

What's New for 2019

For 2019, Toyota has made some rather extensive changes to the Avalon Hybrid. The 2019 Toyota Avalon Hybrid rides on a longer and lower platform than in years past, which was designed to help improve handling. The Avalon’s electric motor receives power from nickel-metal hydride battery cells, which have been moved from the trunk to beneath the rear seats. This has vastly improved cargo space to 16 cubic feet. All trim levels now feature a nine-inch infotainment touchscreen that includes Apple CarPlay integration.

Choosing Your Toyota Avalon Hybrid

The 2019 Toyota Avalon Hybrid starts at $37,420 (all prices include the $920 destination charge) and is offered in three trim levels: XLE, XSE, and Limited. Each is priced $1,000 more than their traditional powertrain counterparts. The Avalon Hybrid receives power via a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine, combined with an electric motor that produces 176 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque. The hybrid system’s net horsepower combined is 215. It's paired with a continuously variable transmission and is expected to return an EPA-estimated 43 miles per gallon combined, which is a 10 percent improvement over 2018. The addition in fuel economy is mainly attributed to an intelligent coasting feature while in Eco-drive mode.

The entry level Hybrid XLE starts at $37,420 and is well equipped with standard driver assisted safety and interior technology features. The base Avalon Hybrid rides on 17-inch alloy wheels, includes LED headlights and taillights, dual-zone automatic climate control, eight-way heated front seats, a smart key system with push-button start, and four drive mode switches (EV, Eco, Normal, and Sport). A nine-inch infotainment system is paired to an eight-speaker audio system that includes five USB ports (three up front and two in the rear), along with App Suite and Apple CarPlay integration. Standard safety features include blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. There are eight exterior color choices and three interior Softex® color patterns to select.

There are three package options offered with the XLE. The JBL Audio Upgrade ($680) brings a 14-speaker JBL audio system that includes Entune 3.0. The Moonroof Package ($1,000) adds a power tilt/slide moonroof, a sliding sunshade, and wireless smartphone charging. The Moonroof Package with options ($1,680) combines the features of the two other equipment packages.

Starting at $39,920, the mid-grade Avalon Hybrid gains 18-inch dark-gray painted wheels, a power moonroof, Ultrasuede-trimmed heated front seats, and a heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel. The XSE can be customized with one of six exterior colors and two interior color patterns. An aluminum interior trim spices up the cabin’s aesthetics, while paddle shifters and aluminum pedal covers provide a sporty touch. The XSE also features a sport-tuned suspension and a rear spoiler. While there's a slew of dealer-added accessories, the only package offered is the JBL Audio Upgrade ($680).

The top of the Avalon Hybrid food chain is the Limited, which starts at $43,720. It features 18-inch wheels, ambient interior lighting, a premium wood trim, heated front leather seats, heated rear seats, and the contents of the JBL Audio Upgrade as standard. The most noticeable enhancement with the Limited is the 10-inch color head up display with customizable settings. This premium trim can be enhanced with the Advanced Safety Package ($1,150), which includes a surround-view camera with perimeter scan, an intelligent clearance sonar system, and rear cross-traffic braking.

CarsDirect Tip

Consumers looking for a tame, fuel-sipping hybrid sedan will find the 2019 Toyota Avalon Hybrid to their liking. The three trim levels make it easy to configure an Avalon that'll fit comfortably into your budget. For the money, the mid-range XSE is the best buy, coming in just shy of $40,000. The addition of heated seats and a heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel is a nice feature for those living in colder climates.
