Model Preview

The BMW X3 went through a redesign in 2018 that brought in a new look and the first-ever M Performance variant in the X3 M40i model. In 2020, the X3 will hit showrooms unchanged, save for the addition of a legit X3 M.

With BMW very resistant to change, we expect the 2020 X3 to hit showrooms with no changes to its base design language. Since this design is still fresh, there shouldn’t be any flack from Bimmer buyers. What will change, though, are the stylistic updates applied to the X3 M. These will include larger air intakes, an optimized front bumper, black double bars on the kidney grille, a high-gloss-black grille surround on Competition models, signature M gills on the fenders, aerodynamically optimized side-view mirrors, an exclusive rear diffuser with special exhaust tips, a special roof spoiler, upgraded wheels, and much more.

Inside, we expect the standard 2020 X3 to carry on with the same looks and features it gained with its 2018 redesign. Like all M models, the 2020 BMW X3 M will add new sportiness to this redesigned SUVs cabin via sport seats wrapped in Vernasca leather with embossed “M” logos, aluminum trim strips, center console knee pads, an M-specific red-on-white gauge cluster and leather-wrapped steering wheel, an M gear shifter, and more. There will also be loads of BMW Individual options to further dress or sport it up.

The standard 2020 BMW X3 xDrive30i will continue to come standard with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that will produce 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The upgraded M40i model will continue with its turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine with 355 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. Both engines will continue with standard eight-speed automatic transmission.

The new-for-2020 BMW X3 M will introduce a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder with a wild 473 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque. This will result in a 4.1-second sprint to 60 mph, making it 0.5 seconds quicker than the X3 M40i and 1.9 seconds quicker than the X3 xDrive30i. Opt for the Competition model, and this output will swell to 503 hp, cutting 0.1 seconds off the 0-to-60 sprint.

The power will route through an M-tuned eight-speed automatic transmission and out to all four wheels via an M-tuned xDrive system. Reigning this in will be an M-tuned chassis with Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ modes for various driving styles and M compound brakes.

The current BMW X3 is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ thanks to its “Good” crash test results and “Superior” front-collision avoidance. The latter is courtesy of its optional automatic emergency braking that is part of the Driving Assistance Package. We expect this to remain the same in the 2020 X3.

Pricing & Release Date

Production of the 2020 BMW X3 and the X3 M will kick off in April 2019. There is no official on-sale date yet, but it should be in showrooms just a few months after production starts.

With no changes to the standard 2020 X3, we expect only mild changes in pricing relative to the current model, which ranges from $41,995 to $55,645 (destination fees included). What will change is the top end will be significantly higher in the X3 M. Look for it to top out in the $65,000 range.

The 2020 BMW X3 will compete with the Audi Q5, Jaguar F-Pace, and Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class.
