2020 BMW X3 M OVERVIEW

Have you ever wished that your family crossover could burn rubber at the track? Ever wanted to enter a drag race on the way to soccer practice? The 2020 BMW X3 M is here to answer your prayers. The new X3 M brings the expertise of BMW’s legendary tuning department to their bestselling compact crossover, and it's as fearsome as you'd expect.

What's New for 2020

The BMW X3 M is a new model for 2020.

Choosing Your BMW X3 M

Underneath the hood of the X3 M is a turbocharged, 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine. That’s the same size as the engine in BMW’s M40i cars, but this one’s been tuned to produce 473 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque – and that’s just in the base model. The racier Competition trim gets another boost up to 503 hp (torque remains the same).

Both engines route power through an eight-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels. The EPA hasn’t released fuel economy estimates yet, but BMW’s turbo engines aren’t as thirsty as one might expect.

BMW hasn’t just upgraded the power. The all-wheel-drive system can be adjusted for a rearward bias, which means the X3 M may be able to hang out its tail on a corner or two. The suspension gets the full M treatment for stiffness and control, plus standard adaptive dampers. The tires are staggered (larger in the back) and hide high-performance brakes. Driving modes allow the steering, engine, and suspension to be configured from comfort to aggression.

Luckily, the performance goodies don’t change the X3’s shape. That means buyers still get the 28.7 cubic feet of cargo capacity (62.7 with the rear seats folded), standard features like LED headlights and 20-inch alloy wheels, and standard active safety tech like automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and forward collision warning.

The remainder of the features are divided among the two trims:

Base

Starting at $70,895 (all prices include the $995 destination charge), the base X3 M is anything but ordinary – it will do the zero-to-60 mph sprint in 4.1 seconds. Standard features include leather upholstery, carbon-fiber trim, heated 14-way power adjustable front seats, cabin and adjustment memory settings, a Harman Kardon surround sound audio system, keyless entry, a power tailgate, front and rear parking assist, rain-sensing windshield wipers, automatic high beams, and ambient lighting.

Packages start with the Driving Assistance Plus Package ($1,700), which adds adaptive cruise control and extra collision mitigation features. The other bundle is the Executive Package ($3,900), which includes gesture control, automated parking assist, a heated steering wheel, a head-up display, wireless charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, front and rear heated seats, rear window shades, and a panoramic moonroof.

Later in 2019, these packages should be joined by an M Driver’s Package. For $2,500, this package removes the electronically limited top speed, allowing the X3 M to achieve up to 174 mph.

Standalone options include 21-inch wheels ($1,200) and merino leather ($1,000). Otherwise, options at launch are limited.

Competition

For $77,895, the X3 M Competition adds even more power and performance. The horsepower boost shaves a tenth of a second off the zero-to-60 time and unlocks another three mph of top speed (with the M Driver’s Package). Other standard features include 21-inch rims, black exterior accents, M sport seats with backlit logos, and merino leather upholstery.

Other than the power boost and the seating, the Competition resembles the base model. The Driving Assistance Plus Package and Executive Package return, while standalone options remain the same with the addition of available front ventilated seats for $350.

CarsDirect Tip

A crossover this fast isn’t just about practicality anymore. The base 2020 BMW X3 M will be enough for most buyers, but we’d get ours with 21-inch wheels and the Executive Package. At that point, why not?
