Liftback styling.The 2020 Buick Regal is available in Sportback (liftback) and wagon styles. Our focus is on the former, which places it in a limited company. The Audi A5 Sportback and Kia Stinger are two similar models to consider.
Sportback or liftgate may be a fancy name for a hatchback, but in this case, Buick pulls it off with a model that's handsome, sporty, and versatile. Its front fascia features a bold grille with Buick's insignia centered therein.
The sedan-like look includes a long body profile, a raised beltline, and a falling roofline. It's a clever design with the long rear window offering the most certain hint that this Regal eschews at least some level of conventionality.
Besides offering room for five, the Sportback supplies 31.5 cubic feet of standard cargo space – that's double what comparable sedans have. Fold down the rear seat and the cargo volume nearly doubles to 60.7 cubic feet. That's within the range of the Nissan Murano, a midsize crossover. It also has slightly more storage space than the Buick Envision.
Stellar acceleration and ride quality. The Regal comes with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. With 250 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, this engine supplies good acceleration.
Choose the Regal GS and this one comes with a 3.6-liter V6 engine generating 310 hp and 282 lb-ft of torque. This engine provides stellar acceleration, strong passing power and – like with models powered by the standard engine – the ride quality is very good. Responsive moves, zippy handling, and strong brakes are additional attributes of note.
A variety of trims to consider. Available in five trim levels, the Regal offers features that range from basic to premium. The range-topping Regal GS, with its V6 engine, is in a league of its own as it comes with a sport suspension, large wheels, and bolstered front seats with heating and cooling.
The base trim restricts you to silver or white paint, manual front seats, and cloth upholstery. The Preferred has a few more features, but it also offers upgrades to expanded equipment choices. Consider the Avenir if upgraded wheels and quilted leather are features you want.
Pricey safety technology. Buick trails most competitors in safety technology. It comes standard with no active safety features until the Avenir trim level (which is the second-most expensive). These popular safety aids are instead tucked away into extra-cost packages, which aren't even available on the base trim.
Starting on the Preferred, buyers can access blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and more through the Driver Confidence Package I ($1,245). The Driver Confidence Package II ($1,090) is optional on the top three trims, which comes with automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control, among other features. We recommend adding both.
Final thoughts. The 2020 Buick Regal will be discontinued after this year, meaning Buick will soon have nothing but utility vehicles in their lineup. This is evolution that's dramatically changed this once sedan-heavy marque.
We think one of the better-equipped models is the right choice here, such as the Essence or Avenir. Although, the Regal GS with the V6 engine and other upgrades offers the best combination of performance and features.
