What's New
The 2020 Ford Ranger continues with minor equipment adjustments and updated colors. The only change of note is the new FX2 Package, which brings off-road capability to rear-wheel-drive versions of the midsize pickup. The current Ranger debuted in the U.S. market last year.
Choosing Your Ford Ranger
The Ranger comes in three trim levels: XL, XLT, and Lariat. Pricing starts at $26,250 including destination for the base XL and goes to $34,340 for the Lariat.
Engine Choices
Every Ranger comes with Ford's 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine, which produces 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. A 10-speed automatic transmission does the shifting. Rear-wheel drive is standard, while four-wheel drive is available for $4,160 on the XL and $4,000 on the XLT and Lariat.
With RWD, the Ranger is EPA-rated at 21 miles per gallon city, 26 mpg highway, and 23 combined. Ratings ease to 20/24/22 mpg (city/highway/combined) with 4WD.
Properly equipped, the Ranger can tow up to 7,500 pounds.
Passenger and Cargo Capacity
The standard SuperCab offers seating for four and a 6-foot bed, which can hold 51.8 cubic feet of cargo. The rear seat can be deleted from XL models at a credit of $240.
The SuperCrew seats five thanks to its full-width rear seat and comes with a 5-foot bed that features 43.3 cubic feet of cargo space. It costs $2,400 on the XL and $2,175 on the XLT and Lariat to upgrade to the SuperCrew.
Safety Features
Automatic emergency breaking is standard throughout the lineup. Most other driver assistance features are bundled in Ford Co-Pilot360 suite, including lane keeping assist, automatic high beams, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. The bundle is standard on the XLT and Lariat and requires $625 with the XL.
Adaptive cruise control and front parking sensors are available on the XLT as part of the $995 Technology Package. The parking sensors are standard on the Lariat, and adaptive cruise control is available in a Technology Package costing $895.
Connectivity
The XL starts out with a four-speaker AM/FM sound system, a USB port, three power points, and a built-in wi-fi hot spot. The 101A Package ($1,135) includes six speakers and Ford's Sync infotainment voice command system.
The XLT and Lariat get SiriusXM radio and Ford's Sync 3 infotainment interface, featuring an 8-inch touchscreen and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Compatibility. Navigation is included in the optional Technology Package for each trim.
Exclusive to the Lariat is a 10-speaker Bang and Olufsen sound system, which comes with navigation and other tech upgrades in the 501A Package, priced at $2,005.
The XL comes with cloth seats, air conditioning, power windows and locks, black exterior trim, and 16-inch steel wheels.
In addition to Sync and two more speakers, the 101A Package ($1,135) brings in cruise control, power side mirrors, a power tailgate lock, and keyless entry. With the 101A Package in place, buyers can add the STX Appearance Package ($995), which spruces up the XL with 17-inch silver aluminum wheels, fog lights, and upgraded cloth upholstery.
The available FX4 Off-Road Package for 4x4 models ($1,295) adds all-terrain tires and shocks, a locking rear differential, underbody skid plates, and an off-road driver information screen. The FX2 Package ($595) adds the same features to 4x2 models.
The XLT gets the 101A and STX equipment, plus dual-zone automatic climate control, body-color exterior trim, and a household-style power outlet. Ford Co-Pilot360 and Sync 3 are also standard.
The 301A Package ($1,670) tacks on power-folding mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, and dark-colored wheels and body trim. The 302A Package ($2,450) has all that plus heated power front seats, remote start, and a sliding rear window.
With either package selected, buyers can get a Technology Package ($995) with adaptive cruise control, navigation, and front parking sensors.
The Lariat distinguishes itself with leather seats, full LED exterior lighting, push-button start, and 18-inch machined aluminum wheels.
The Technology Package for the Lariat provides adaptive cruise control and navigation for $895. Those features are also available the 501 Package ($2,005), along with the Bang and Olufsen sound system, remote start, and automatic wipers.
Compare Ranger Trims Side-By-Side
Since the 2020 Ford Ranger is more for pleasure than work, the XLT should appeal to all but the most cost-conscious buyers. Upgrading to the Lariat is only necessary if you can't live without leather seats.
