    What's New

The 2020 GMC Sierra 3500HD moves to General Motors' latest full-size pickup platform, which debuted on regular-duty Sierra 1500 trucks last year. This means a longer wheelbase, a taller cab, greater towing capability, and additional possibilities for handling cargo.

The all-new 3500HD also gets a larger, more powerful base engine and a new 10-speed transmission for the optional DuraMax turbodiesel. The lineup now includes an AT4 model designed for off-roading.

As the brawniest truck in the GMC lineup, the 3500HD is available with dual rear wheels and can tow up to 35,500 pounds – a whopping 52% increase over last year.

    Choosing Your GMC Sierra 3500HD

The GMC Sierra 3500HD comes in five trims, from utilitarian to plush: Sierra, SLE, SLT, AT4, and Denali. Pricing starts at $38,395 including destination for the base Sierra and goes all the way to $66,495 for the Denali.

The 3500HD is available in three cab styles: Regular, Double, and Crew. The SLT, AT4, and Denali come in Crew Cab form only.

    Engine Choices

The Sierra 3500HD comes standard with GM's largest V8 engine, while a turbodiesel V8 is available on every trim. Both engines are available with dual rear wheels ($1,200) for maximum hauling ability (though they're not available on the AT4).

    Engine TypeHorsepowerTorqueMax Towing
    6.6L V8401 hp464 lb-ft17,200 pounds
    6.6L Turbodiesel V8445 hp910 lb-ft35,500 pounds

The turbodiesel is available on every trim, usually for a $9,890 premium over the gas engine. However, the upgrade can cost anywhere from $9,750 to $12,115 depending on the configuration.

GMC also offers the turbodiesel engine with integrated power take-off (PTO) on the base Sierra and SLE trims. The PTO system costs anywhere from $995 to $1,220 depending on the configuration

The gas V8 uses a six-speed automatic transmission, while the Duramax gets a 10-speed Allison automatic. Four-wheel drive is standard on the AT4 and Denali, and a $2,800 option on the other trims. Note that heavy-duty vehicles like the 3500HD are exempt from EPA mileage testing.

    Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The GMC Sierra 3500HD can seat three, five, or six passengers depending on which Cab you choose. This year's redesign brings interior space to the top of this class. All cab styles display abundant head room, and the Crew Cab gains nearly 3 inches of rear leg room.

The Regular Cab and Crew Cab are available with an 8-foot-2-inch bed with a class-leading 83.5 cubic feet of cargo volume. The Double Cab and Crew Cab can be had with a 6-foot-10-inch bed that holds up to 69.6 cubic feet. Both beds gain a side step in front of the rear wheels, and load height is an inch lover than before. Cargo tie-downs total 12.

The new MultiPro tailgate can be configured to serve different roles, from a bed extender to entry steps. It's standard on the SLT and above, and a $445 option on base and SLE models.

    Safety Features

The Sierra 3500HD is designed to be highly configurable, so standard safety technology is limited to the government-mandated rearview camera. Everything else is bundled into three option packages.

The Driver Alert I ($890) Package furnishes front and rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. It is available on the Sierra, SLE, SLT, and AT4 trims. On the SLT and AT4, the Driver Alert II ($645) Package adds lane departure warning, automatic high beams, automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, and a vibrating safety alert in the driver seat. The features from both packages are included in the Denali at no cost.

Also available on the SLT and AT4, he Technology Package ($2,125) tops off the 3500HD with a surround-view camera system, a dedicated bed-view camera, a head-up display, a rearview mirror camera display, and an 8-inch driver information display.

The GMC Sierra 3500HD starts out with a 7-inch touchscreen, a six-speaker audio system, a front USB port, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. Trims above the base Sierra get a wi-fi hotspot, up to four USB ports, and up to three household-style power outlets (front/rear/bed).

GMC offers an upgraded infotainment setup with Bose sound, navigation, an 8-inch touchscreen, and wireless device charging. The bundle is optional on the SLT and standard on the Denali.

    CarsDirect Tip

According to the automaker, just over half of GMC Sierra 3500HD buyers choose the Denali. We can't quibble with their decision. Considering the Denali's massive load of standard equipment, the luxury part doesn't cost nearly as much as you would think.
