What's New
The four-door 2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited gets an updated powertrain lineup. Sport and Rubicon trims are available with three engines: a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, a 3.6-liter V6, and a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6. The Sahara trim opens the door for the mild-hybrid system with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder and the 3.6-liter V6.
The available Advanced Safety Group now comes with automatic high beams, while the Sport trim can be fitted with LED headlights and fog lights as optional features. Finally, two new special edition models also join the lineup for 2020: the Willys and the Black and Tan.
Choosing Your Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
Jeep offers the Wrangler Unlimited in four trims: Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon. Pricing starts at $33,290 including destination for the Sport and goes up to $43,290 for the Rubicon.
There are several special edition models as well. The aforementioned Black and Tan and Willys are based on the Sport S. The Sport Altitude and Sahara Altitude are blacked-out versions of the Sport S and Sahara, respectively.
Engine Choices
There are three engine options for the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. All models get a 3.6-liter V6 as standard, while a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder is optional on Sport S, Sahara and Rubicon models. A 3.0-liter diesel V6 with late availability will also be available on all models.
Engine Type | Horsepower | Torque | Fuel Economy (Combined) |
3.6L V6 | 285 hp | 260 lb-ft | 20 mpg |
2.0L Turbo 4-Cylinder | 270 hp | 295 lb-ft | 21 mpg |
3.0L EcoDiesel V6 | 260 hp | 442 lb-ft | Not Yet Rated |
Four-wheel drive is standard for all powertrains. A six-speed manual is standard with the gas V6, but an eight-speed automatic is available for $2,500 on Sport, Sport S, and Rubicon models. All other powertrains are paired with the eight-speed automatic. Towing capacity is rated at up to 3,500 pounds.
Exclusively on Sahara models, mild-hybrid versions of the 2.0-liter four-cylinder and 3.6-liter V6 with eTorque technology are available for $2,000 or $3,000, respectively, over the base engine. The mild-hybrid systems don’t do much to boost fuel economy and are pricey upgrades. However, if you do a lot of city driving, you might see some savings in the long run.
Passenger and Cargo Capacity
The Wrangler Unlimited has seating for five. The four-door body style has a generous amount of cargo space with 31.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats. In total, it offers 72.4 cubic feet of cargo space.
Safety Features
No Wrangler Unlimited models come standard with any active safety features, but Jeep does offer some safety technologies in packages.
Starting on Sport S models, two bundles become available. The Safety Group ($995) includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, and LED taillights, while the Advanced Safety Group ($795, requires The Safety Group first) adds adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and forward collision warning.
Connectivity
All Wrangler Unlimited trims utilize FCA’s Uconnect infotainment system. The Sport and Sport S come with a 5-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, and a USB port.
The Sport S can be equipped with a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto through the Technology Package ($995). This system is standard on the Sahara, Rubicon, and Black and Tan special edition.
An even larger 8.4-inch touchscreen display with navigation, wi-fi hot spot capability, and HD radio is available on Sahara and Rubicon models through the 8.4-inch Radio and Premium Audio Group ($1,595).
The base Wrangler Sport trim comes with a black vinyl top, 17-inch steel wheels, and fog lights. While it has manual windows, side mirrors, and door locks, it does include air conditioning, push button start, and an eight-speaker audio system. The cloth seats feature six-way manual adjustment for the driver and four-way manual adjustment for the front passenger.
Add all of the necessary equipment to tow with the Wrangler through the available Trailer-Tow and Heavy-Duty Electrical Group ($795). A three-piece hard top is a $1,195 standalone option.
The Sport S is available as a package on the Wrangler Unlimited Sport and adds 17-inch aluminum wheels, automatic headlights, power and heated side mirrors, and power windows and door locks over the base model.
The bigger reason to go with the Sport S is that it adds a plethora of available packages, including the Safety Group, Advanced Safety Group, and Technology Group. Buyers can also bundle heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and remote start with the Gold Weather Group ($695).
The Black and Tan special edition costs $1,695. It adds a tan soft top, 17-inch black wheels, black interior trim, tan cloth seats, and side steps. The 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto along with the rest of the contents of the Technology Package are standard.
The Sport Altitude special edition is also a $1,695 premium over the standard Sport S. It brings 18-inch black wheels, a black hard top with a headliner, black grille throats and headlight insets, and black interior accent stitching. Heavy-duty brakes and heavy-duty suspension are also included.
The Willys special edition costs $2,495, adding a limited-slip rear differential, heavy-duty brakes, Rubicon rock rails and shocks, and 32-inch tires with 17-inch aluminum wheels for increased off-road capability. KED headlights and fog lights and all-weather slush mats are also included.
Standard features on the Wrangler Sahara include heavy-duty brakes, 18-inch wheels, and side steps. The interior is enhanced with the 7-inch touchscreen, a 7-inch driver information display, ambient interior lighting, and automatic temperature control.
The Sahara Altitude subtrim adds 18-inch gloss black wheels, black leather upholstery with black accent stitching, black fender badges, black grille throats, black headlight inserts, black fog light bezels, and a body-color hard top with a headliner for $3,295.
The Rubicon is the off-roading-oriented trim and comes with a heavy-duty four-wheel-drive system, a 4.10 rear axle ratio, front and rear locking differentials, and 33-inch all-terrain tires.
Steel front and rear bumpers are bundled together in the Steel Bumper Group for $1,295.
Compare Wrangler Unlimited Trims Side-By-Side
The 2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is an old-school SUV, so it’s not exactly comfortable, quiet, or well equipped. What the Wrangler does best is go off-roading. With that being said, we recommend going with the Sport S trim, or the Rubicon if you have the budget.
