Overview

What's New

The four-door 2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited gets an updated powertrain lineup. Sport and Rubicon trims are available with three engines: a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, a 3.6-liter V6, and a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6. The Sahara trim opens the door for the mild-hybrid system with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder and the 3.6-liter V6.

The available Advanced Safety Group now comes with automatic high beams, while the Sport trim can be fitted with LED headlights and fog lights as optional features. Finally, two new special edition models also join the lineup for 2020: the Willys and the Black and Tan.

Choosing Your Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

Jeep offers the Wrangler Unlimited in four trims: Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon. Pricing starts at $33,290 including destination for the Sport and goes up to $43,290 for the Rubicon.

There are several special edition models as well. The aforementioned Black and Tan and Willys are based on the Sport S. The Sport Altitude and Sahara Altitude are blacked-out versions of the Sport S and Sahara, respectively.

Engine Choices

There are three engine options for the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. All models get a 3.6-liter V6 as standard, while a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder is optional on Sport S, Sahara and Rubicon models. A 3.0-liter diesel V6 with late availability will also be available on all models.

Engine TypeHorsepowerTorqueFuel Economy (Combined)

2.0L Turbo 4-Cylinder270 hp295 lb-ft21 mpg
3.0L EcoDiesel V6260 hp442 lb-ftNot Yet Rated

Four-wheel drive is standard for all powertrains. A six-speed manual is standard with the gas V6, but an eight-speed automatic is available for $2,500 on Sport, Sport S, and Rubicon models. All other powertrains are paired with the eight-speed automatic. Towing capacity is rated at up to 3,500 pounds.

Exclusively on Sahara models, mild-hybrid versions of the 2.0-liter four-cylinder and 3.6-liter V6 with eTorque technology are available for $2,000 or $3,000, respectively, over the base engine. The mild-hybrid systems don’t do much to boost fuel economy and are pricey upgrades. However, if you do a lot of city driving, you might see some savings in the long run.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The Wrangler Unlimited has seating for five. The four-door body style has a generous amount of cargo space with 31.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats. In total, it offers 72.4 cubic feet of cargo space.

Safety Features

No Wrangler Unlimited models come standard with any active safety features, but Jeep does offer some safety technologies in packages.

Starting on Sport S models, two bundles become available. The Safety Group ($995) includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, and LED taillights, while the Advanced Safety Group ($795, requires The Safety Group first) adds adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and forward collision warning.

Connectivity

All Wrangler Unlimited trims utilize FCA’s Uconnect infotainment system. The Sport and Sport S come with a 5-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, and a USB port.

The Sport S can be equipped with a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto through the Technology Package ($995). This system is standard on the Sahara, Rubicon, and Black and Tan special edition.

An even larger 8.4-inch touchscreen display with navigation, wi-fi hot spot capability, and HD radio is available on Sahara and Rubicon models through the 8.4-inch Radio and Premium Audio Group ($1,595).

Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

Sport - From $33,290

The base Wrangler Sport trim comes with a black vinyl top, 17-inch steel wheels, and fog lights. While it has manual windows, side mirrors, and door locks, it does include air conditioning, push button start, and an eight-speaker audio system. The cloth seats feature six-way manual adjustment for the driver and four-way manual adjustment for the front passenger.

Add all of the necessary equipment to tow with the Wrangler through the available Trailer-Tow and Heavy-Duty Electrical Group ($795). A three-piece hard top is a $1,195 standalone option.

Sport S - From $36,490

The Sport S is available as a package on the Wrangler Unlimited Sport and adds 17-inch aluminum wheels, automatic headlights, power and heated side mirrors, and power windows and door locks over the base model.

The bigger reason to go with the Sport S is that it adds a plethora of available packages, including the Safety Group, Advanced Safety Group, and Technology Group. Buyers can also bundle heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and remote start with the Gold Weather Group ($695).

The Black and Tan special edition costs $1,695. It adds a tan soft top, 17-inch black wheels, black interior trim, tan cloth seats, and side steps. The 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto along with the rest of the contents of the Technology Package are standard.

The Sport Altitude special edition is also a $1,695 premium over the standard Sport S. It brings 18-inch black wheels, a black hard top with a headliner, black grille throats and headlight insets, and black interior accent stitching. Heavy-duty brakes and heavy-duty suspension are also included.

The Willys special edition costs $2,495, adding a limited-slip rear differential, heavy-duty brakes, Rubicon rock rails and shocks, and 32-inch tires with 17-inch aluminum wheels for increased off-road capability. KED headlights and fog lights and all-weather slush mats are also included.

Sahara - From $40,140

Standard features on the Wrangler Sahara include heavy-duty brakes, 18-inch wheels, and side steps. The interior is enhanced with the 7-inch touchscreen, a 7-inch driver information display, ambient interior lighting, and automatic temperature control.

The Sahara Altitude subtrim adds 18-inch gloss black wheels, black leather upholstery with black accent stitching, black fender badges, black grille throats, black headlight inserts, black fog light bezels, and a body-color hard top with a headliner for $3,295.

Rubicon - From $43,290

The Rubicon is the off-roading-oriented trim and comes with a heavy-duty four-wheel-drive system, a 4.10 rear axle ratio, front and rear locking differentials, and 33-inch all-terrain tires.

Steel front and rear bumpers are bundled together in the Steel Bumper Group for $1,295.

CarsDirect Tip

The 2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is an old-school SUV, so it’s not exactly comfortable, quiet, or well equipped. What the Wrangler does best is go off-roading. With that being said, we recommend going with the Sport S trim, or the Rubicon if you have the budget.

Compromise. The four-door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited underwent a full redesign in 2018 that brought an updated look and a more refined cabin. The Wrangler Unlimited's iconic styling is still as recognizable as ever, with all of the charm that makes it perennially popular.

However, the 2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is an off-road-first rig. It can haul the whole family in a pinch, but it isn't the most refined vehicle on pavement.

Finally, a diesel engine. Jeep Wrangler Unlimited fans have clamored for years to get a torque-heavy diesel engine, but were left out in the cold. In 2020, the Jeep finally delivers with a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 engine that cranks out 260 horsepower and a mighty 442 pound-feet of torque. While there are no official EPA tests yet, Jeep promises this will be the most fuel-efficient Wrangler Unlimited ever.

For those not in the market for an oil burner, there are two capable gasoline options. They start with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that pounds out 285 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque and pairs to either a standard six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic.

Optionally, buyers can go with the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that delivers 270 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. While the extra torque is nice for off-roaders, its standard eight-speed automatic transmission may be a deal breaker for those seeking the control of a manual.

Adding to the already robust engine lineup are mild-hybrid versions of the two gasoline engines in the Sahara trim.

Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

Better check your priorities. The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited has a huge draw with its off-road prowess. Even its base Sport trim is plenty capable off the beaten path. That said, some buyers may need to check their priorities at the showroom door.

First, while the Wrangler Unlimited may have all the off-road prowess you’ll ever want, its on-road manners are a different story. While they've improved over the years, the Wrangler is still a rougher ride than virtually any other crossover or SUV. Buyers who plan to do just a little off-roading and more commuting to work may find its showroom neighbor, the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, a better fit.

Also, despite it being a four-door SUV, the rear seats have just 38.3 inches of legroom. This is massive compared to the two-door Wrangler, but it comes up short compared to the Grand Cherokee’s 38.6 inches, the Ford Explorer’s 39 inches, and the GMC Acadia’s 39.7 inches.

Iconic looks improved, but still imperfect. Despite a recent redesign, the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is still recognizable from a mile away. This has also long been the case with its simple interior, which has been a drawback to many buyers.

The 2020 Wrangler Unlimited’s cabin looks far better than it ever has, especially in its higher trim levels, which gain an 8.4-inch touchscreen and more premium materials.

In its base model, though, the Wrangler Unlimited remains very simple compared to its competitors with its standard urethane steering wheel, tiny 5-inch touchscreen, and other basics.

Buyers who want more balance will find this with the Grand Cherokee’s standard 7-inch touchscreen and classier-looking cabin or the very well-equipped Land Rover Discovery.

Final thoughts. The 2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is what it’s always been: a great option for families who regularly take their SUV off-roading.

Can the Wrangler Unlimited be a commuter vehicle? Of course, especially with the thriftier diesel option coming. That said, there are simply too many compromises to be made for it to make sense as an on-road-only daily driver.

Buyers seeking a vehicle for the family that can tackle occasional off-roading may find a better balance in the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk or the Land Rover Discovery Sport. The Wrangler Unlimited is simply too pricey and too rugged to make sense.
