What's New
Every 2020 Lexus GX receives the brand's Safety System Plus bundle of active safety equipment, bringing adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and more. A new Off-Road Package is now available, while an updated grille distinguishes the latest model year.
Choosing Your Lexus GX
The Lexus GX is offered in three trims: GX 460, GX 460 Premium, and GX 460 Luxury. Pricing starts at $54,025 including destination for the GX 460 and extends up to $65,290 for the GX 460 Luxury.
Engine Choices
Every GX comes with a 4.6-liter V8 engine that produces 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission feeds power through a four-wheel-drive system with a 40:60 rear bias in normal driving conditions.
Towing capacity checks in at 6,500 pounds. The GX achieves an EPA-estimated 15 miles per gallon city, 19 mpg highway, and 16 combined.
Passenger and Cargo Capacity
The Lexus GX is a three-row, seven-passenger SUV. Second-row captain's chairs are available on the GX 460 Premium and GX 460 Luxury trims to drop seating to six. It has a maximum cargo capacity of 64.7 cubic feet. The second row features a 40/20/40 split, while the third-row seats fold flat.
Safety Features
The GX protects its occupants with standard adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, automatic high beams, and road sign assist. It's nice to see these features not get tucked away in pricey optional packages.
Connectivity
A color touchscreen in the GX’s dash can display three different infotainment elements at once. Four USB audio ports and a nine-speaker audio system comes standard.
Navigation is standard on the GX 460 Premium and GX 460 Luxury, and optional on the GX 460 for $1,555. A 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system is available on Luxury models for $1,145.
The GX 460 is impressively equipped with LED headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, illuminated running boards, a power moonroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, 10-way power front seats, and push button start. There's memory functionality for the driver's seat, outside mirrors, and steering wheel as well.
Heated and ventilated front seats are a $640 standalone option, as is a park assist system for $500.
Opting for GX 460 Premium package introduces several welcome features, including the navigation and parking assist systems. Other standard fare includes three-zone automatic climate control, interior wood trim, heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row outboard seats, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and LED fog lights.
Anyone wanting to give their GX a makeover should consider the $5,510 Sport Design Package. It adds 19-inch gray wheels, second-row captain's chairs, scarlet taillights, dark gray exhaust tips, and a unique front fascia, side mirrors, and rear valance.
The substantial price hike on GX 460 Luxury models reflects their greater dynamic ability, with auto-leveling rear air suspension and adaptive variable suspension both standard.
The interior gains semi-aniline leather, and the third-row seats can be electrically reclined and folded. The heated steering wheel is finished in wood and leather, headlight washers are standard, and the outside mirrors are auto-dimming, heated, and power-folding.
The new $1,570 Off-Road Package equips the GX with a crawl control system that regulates the throttle and brakes at low speeds, both forwards and backwards. It also adds a multi-terrain select system, a surround-view camera system with a terrain monitor, a protector over the fuel tank, and a cooler for the transmission oil.
Unless you’re a serious off-roader or tower, it’s hard to justify the cost of the 2020 Lexus GX 460 Luxury. The GX 460 Premium represents good value for its price.
