Overview

What's New

The 2020 Lexus RX gets a thorough refresh mid-way through its life cycle. The front and rear fascias have been updated, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration join the mix (making the RX the first Lexus model to receive Android Auto), and every model gets the Lexus Safety System Plus 2.0 suite of active safety features.

In many ways, the RX defines continuous improvement as it extends to adapt to the growing segment while maintaining its just-right size.

Choosing Your Lexus RX

The Lexus RX is offered in four trims: RX 350, RX 450h, RX 350 F Sport, and RX 450h F Sport. The "h" stands for hybrid in Lexus parlance. Pricing starts at $45,175 including destination for the RX 350 and only climbs to $51,575 for the RX 450h F Sport.

The RX 350 and 450h are available with three rows designated as RX 350L and RX 450hL, respectively. The extended version includes a power-folding third row seat and tri-zone climate control for $3,150 (RX 350L) or $3,710 (RX 450hL) over their standard variants.

Engine Choices

The RX utilizes a 3.5-liter V6 engine, while hybrid models add two electric motors to the mix for stronger acceleration and passing power.

Engine TypeHorsepowerTorqueFuel Economy (Combined)
3.5L V6295 hp267 lb-ft23 mpg
3.5L V6 Hybrid308 hpNot Measured30 mpg

The gas-powered engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission with front-wheel drive standard. All-wheel drive is available for $1,400. Hybrid models come standard with AWD and a continuously variable transmission.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The standard Lexus RX seats five, while the "L" variants add a third row and expand capacity to seven, although it's extremely tight back there. The extended-length hybrid comes standard with second-row captain's chairs and can seat six.

Standard models have 18.4 cubic feet of cargo space, which expands to 56.3 cubic feet with the second row folded. The three-row models have 16.3 cubic feet behind the third row, 23.0 behind the second, and 58.5 cubic feet with both rows folded.

Safety Features

The RX now comes with the Lexus Safety System Plus 2.0. It includes automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian and bicyclist detection, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, road sign assist, and lane tracing assist.

Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, a surround-view camera system, and a park assist system are bundled together for $1,865, while a head-up display is a $600 option.

Connectivity

The Lexus RX comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility. A nine-speaker audio system and six USB ports are also standard fare.

The $2,285 Navigation Package adds a 12.3-inch touchscreen display with navigation, a remote touchpad, a 12-speaker audio system, and an in-dash DVD/CD player. Include a 15-speaker Mark Levinson audio system with the bundle instead for $3,365.

Lexus RX

RX 350 - Priced from $45,175

The RX 350 includes 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, heated exterior mirrors with integrated turn signals, and a power tailgate as standard equipment. Inside, synthetic leather seating, proximity entry with push button start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a power-folding rear seat are features that help the RX 350 snuggle in with the luxury crossover crowd.

The Premium Package ($1,580) bundles a moonroof, aluminum roof rails, auto-dimming side mirrors, memory functionality for the driver's seat, steering wheel, and side mirrors, and unique bamboo or walnut interior trim.

RX 450h - From $47,775

The RX 450h is equipped similary to the RX 350, but it adds the hybrid powertrain, hidden exhaust outlets, and an EV mode selector.

Buyers can up their comfort quotient with the Luxury Package ($4,130), which bundles semi-aniline perforated leather upholstery, front seat power cushion extenders, ambient lighting, 20-inch chrome alloy wheels, and much more.

RX 350 F Sport - From $48,975

The RX 350 F Sport is equipped with unique 20-inch graphite-colored wheels, black mirror caps, a unique grille, and adaptive variable dampers. Sport seats with additional bolstering, aluminum interior trim, and an updated instrument cluster make for a sportier interior look.

The F Sport Performance Package ($4,770) adds an F Sport-tuned adaptive variable suspension, a heated steering wheel, F Sport-tuned electronic power steering, and a Sport S Plus mode to the drive mode select feature.

RX 450h F Sport - From $51,575

The RX 450h F Sport merges the standard equipment of the RX 450h and the go-fast looks of the RX 350 F Sport. The F Sport Performance Package is still available for $4,770.

Brashly styled, but sensibility still reigns. The refreshed 2020 Lexus RX is anything but subtle, with its gaping spindle grille, blacked-out roof pillars, and squinty headlights. It looks like a giant piece of origami from most angles, with a multitude of sharp creases that appear to fold over themselves. While it's certainly interesting to look at, we do wonder if the Lexus designers went a little too far.

That said, the drama of the Lexus RX is only as shallow as the paint. It isn't remotely exciting to drive in any configuration, even in the “sporty” F Sport trim. Instead, the RX is designed for comfort above all else, striving to insulate you from the road with a plush suspension rather than allow you to commune with it.

Available hybrid. The RX 450h hybrid is likely the best configuration for shoppers, as its reduced fuel consumption pairs well with its calm demeanor. This powerplant allows the RX 450h to manage an EPA-estimated 31 miles per gallon city, which is quite good for an SUV of this size and a full 12 mpg better than the standard RX 350 with all-wheel drive.

To put that in perspective, the gas savings realized with an RX 450h will likely surpass the hybrid’s $1,200 up-front premium over an AWD-equipped RX 350 in a little over one year of ownership (assuming 15,000 miles driven per year and an average gas price of $3.00 per gallon). In other words, if you plan on keeping your RX model for over a year, it makes the RX 450h the much better value for the money.

Lexus RX

Plenty of room … for five. While the RX is available in both short- and long-wheelbase models, the third row offered in the RX L is unusable to anyone besides small children. If you need three full rows, you’ll have to look elsewhere.

That said, the RX is a fantastic choice for those who only need to carry five (or four if equipped with the optional second-row captain’s chairs). The front and rear seats are very comfortable with plenty of room, pairing well with the quiet interior trimmed in grey wood accents and convincingly fake leather in most models.

F Sport models eschew the standard luxury treatment for one draped in red leather and aluminum trim, bolstered sport seats, and faux engine noises. The interior trim may look sporty, but it still isn’t any more fun to drive.

Mixed crash test scores. Most other vehicles on the market are consistently getting better at protecting their occupants with improving crash test scores. Concerningly, the RX isn't one of those models.

While the IIHS did name it a Top Safety Pick when equipped with LED headlights, the NHTSA only gave front-wheel-drive models four stars overall with marks taken away for frontal crash protection.

Final thoughts. Who wants to have some fun? Are you just saying you want to have fun, or do you really want to have fun? If you’re just saying that you want to have fun, the 2020 Lexus RX is the perfect SUV for you. Not that there’s anything wrong with that!

While the edgy design certainly feels exciting, the RX is clearly designed for a more relaxed pace. Instead of adrenaline, the RX prescribes serotonin with its comfortable and spacious interior and unobtrusive ride.

Those who do want something sportier would be better off in the Jaguar F-Pace, while those in search of a more comprehensive cutting-edge design ethos would be delighted by the Volvo XC60. Those in need of a usable third row may want to look down-market at a well-optioned Hyundai Palisade or Honda Pilot.
