What's New
Following last year's debut, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan is back with no changes. It remains the cheapest way to get into a Mercedes. An AMG variant is supposed to arrive later this year, but for now, the A-Class is only available one way.
Choosing Your Mercedes-Benz A-Class
The A-Class comes in a single trim level: A 220. It costs $33,795 including destination.
Engine Choices
The Mercedes A 220 is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It generates 188 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque and is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Front-wheel drive comes standard, but Mercedes' 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system is available for $2,000.
The A-Class earns an EPA-estimated 24 miles per gallon city, 35 mpg highway (34 mpg with AWD), and 28 combined.
Passenger and Cargo Capacity
The A-Class comes with a passenger capacity of five and a cargo capacity of 8.6 cubic feet in the trunk. With only 33.9 inches of leg room in the back, the rear seat is tight for adults.
Safety Features
Standard safety features on the A-Class include automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, a driver attention monitor, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and LED headlights and taillights.
Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are available for $500, as are a surround-view camera system and an automated parking system through the Parking Assistance Package ($1,090).
Adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, lane change assist, and more are bundled in the Driver Assistance Package ($2,250).
Connectivity
A 7-inch touchscreen running the brand's latest Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment is standard. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, HD radio, voice control, and five USB ports are included.
However, buyers will likely want to upgrade to the available 10.25-inch touchscreen display. It's available alongside navigation and a speed limit assist system through the Multimedia Package ($1,150).
A head-up display is an $1,100 option, while wireless charging is an extra $200.
The lack of a trim lineup isn’t a problem since the standard Mercedes A 220 comes with a healthy list of standard equipment.
Highlights include a panorama roof, 12-way power front seats with four-way lumbar support and memory functionality, leatherette upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, push button start, and remote start.
You could run riot with the A-Class’ options sheet, but the $2,200 Premium Package is a good place to start. It bundles the 10.25-inch touchscreen, blind-spot monitoring, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster display, power-folding and auto-dimming side mirrors, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a hands-free trunk.
Notable standalone options include heated front seats ($580), heated and ventilated front seats ($1,030), a heated steering wheel ($250), and a Burmester surround-sound audio system ($850).
Buyers have a simple choice between front- or all-wheel drive with the 2020 Mercedes A-Class sedan. It’s worth choosing your options carefully, but we like the safety features from the Driver Assistance Package and the convenience bundle the Premium Package offers.
