Expert Rating

Not Available

Unlike other websites and magazines, our ratings are not based solely on a singular road test, but rather a more encompassing batch of criteria: quality, safety, comfort, performance, fuel economy, reliability history and value. When comparing vehicles using our Rating System, it's important to note that the rating earned by each vehicle correlates only to the models within its class. For example, a compact car cannot be compared to a SUV—They are different vehicles altogether.

You can interpret our ratings in the following way:

5-Star: Outstanding vehicle. Only the most exceptional vehicles achieve this rating.

4-Star: Very Good vehicle. Very good and close to being the best vehicle in its class.

3-Star: Good vehicle. Decent, but not quite the best. Often affordable, but lacking key features found in vehicles of the same class.

2-Star: Below average vehicle. Not recommended, and lacking attributes a car buyer would come to expect for the price.

1-Star: Poor vehicle. Simply does not deserve to be on the road.

2020 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid Overview

Willis Kuelthau
Automotive Editor

What's New

Introduced to the lineup just last year, the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid returns largely unchanged. The only addition is a welcome one: Subaru’s EyeSight suite of safety technology is now standard, which includes features like adaptive cruise control. The Hybrid gets its own EyeSight system indicator for the driver information display.

The Crosstrek Hybrid sees a modest $150 price increase for 2020, although Subaru’s new destination fees bring the total change to $185.

Choosing Your Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

The plug-in hybrid Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid is only available in one trim: Crosstrek Hybrid. It's the most expensive Crosstrek model (gas-powered models are covered separately), starting at $36,155 including destination. This is before any federal or state incentives.

Engine Choices

The Crosstrek Hybrid pairs a 2.0-liter four-cylinder Subaru BOXER engine with an 8.8-kWh lithium-ion battery pack and two electric motors. Total output is 148 horsepower and 149 pound-feet of torque, which is fed to all four wheels through a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

The big numbers are fuel economy and electric range. The EPA estimates that the Crosstrek Hybrid will do 35 miles per gallon combined, or 90 miles per gallon of gasoline equivalent (MPGe) combined. In electric-only mode, the Crosstrek Hybrid has a range of up to 17 miles.

Both numbers put the Hybrid far ahead of many crossovers and hatchbacks, especially when combined with Subaru’s standard all-wheel drive.

This combination means the Crosstrek Hybrid has few true competitors. Mainstays like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V are available only as conventional hybrids, while other plug-ins like the Kia Niro are front-wheel drive only. The most direct competitor might be the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, but the Crosstrek Hybrid is far more efficient.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The Crosstrek Hybrid seats five passengers just as comfortably as its gas-powered siblings. The battery packs cut rear headroom by a fraction of an inch, but rear passengers get a little more legroom to make up for it.

The same can’t be said for cargo capacity. The Hybrid has 15.9 cubic feet of space behind the second row, which is nearly 5 cubic feet down on the conventional Crosstrek. Folding the rear seats unlocks a respectable 43.1 cubic feet, but the Crosstrek Hybrid is still behind competitors.

Safety Features

With its newly standard features, the Crosstrek Hybrid is a safety standout. Forward and reverse automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control are all included.

The Hybrid gets the top-spec adaptive LED headlights with automatic high beams. Thanks to those, the Crosstrek Hybrid is an IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus.

The Hybrid gets the best of the Crosstrek’s infotainment options, a central 8-inch touchscreen. It comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, satellite radio, HD radio, two USB ports in both rows, and available 4G LTE wi-fi.

A Harman Kardon audio system and a TomTom-powered navigation system are optional.

Crosstrek Hybrid - From $36,155

Positioned at the top of the Crosstrek lineup, the Crosstrek Hybrid comes with plenty of standard niceties. Upholstery is leather, and the front seats are power adjustable and heated.

Keyless entry, push-button start, and automatic climate control are all standard. The exterior gets 18-inch wheels with low-resistance tires, LED lighting, and low-profile roof rails.

Only one package is available, bundling a power moonroof, navigation, an eight-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, and a heated steering wheel for $2,500.

CarsDirect Tip

With only one trim to choose from, your biggest dilemma with the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid may be picking an exterior color. Plug-in efficiency with all-wheel drive versatility might be a niche package, but the Crosstrek Hybrid sets itself up well for both adventure and commuting duties.
