Expert Rating

Not Available

Unlike other websites and magazines, our ratings are not based solely on a singular road test, but rather a more encompassing batch of criteria: quality, safety, comfort, performance, fuel economy, reliability history and value. When comparing vehicles using our Rating System, it's important to note that the rating earned by each vehicle correlates only to the models within its class. For example, a compact car cannot be compared to a SUV—They are different vehicles altogether.

You can interpret our ratings in the following way:

5-Star: Outstanding vehicle. Only the most exceptional vehicles achieve this rating.

4-Star: Very Good vehicle. Very good and close to being the best vehicle in its class.

3-Star: Good vehicle. Decent, but not quite the best. Often affordable, but lacking key features found in vehicles of the same class.

2-Star: Below average vehicle. Not recommended, and lacking attributes a car buyer would come to expect for the price.

1-Star: Poor vehicle. Simply does not deserve to be on the road.

2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Overview

William Kinton
Automotive Editor

What's New

The Toyota Land Cruiser is considered by many to be the pinnacle of overland expeditions with legendary reliability, go-anywhere toughness, and enough luxury to justify its price tag.

While largely unchanged, the 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser is being offered with a special edition known as the Heritage Edition. This trim will celebrate the vehicle’s legacy stretching back to 1951.

Choosing Your Toyota Land Cruiser

The Toyota Land Cruiser lineup is simple with only two trims: Land Cruiser and the Heritage Edition. Prices start at $86,640 including destination for the Land Cruiser and rise to $88,970 for the Heritage Edition.

Engine Choices

All Toyota Land Cruiser models are equipped with the same 5.7-liter V8 mated with an eight-speed automatic transmission and full-time four-wheel drive. The engine makes 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque, and brings an 8,100-pound towing capacity.

The Land Cruiser is known for going off road, and it's given the correct equipment for the task. The torque from the V8 is perfect for crawling over anything at low speeds and the 4WD system is blessed with a Torsen limited-slip center locking differential with a two-speed transfer case.

The Land Cruiser is also equipped with advanced off-road driving technology including hill descent assist, multiple terrain modes, off-road turn assist and Crawl Control, which acts like a low-speed off-road cruise control.

However, this set up is not ideal for most SUV buyers in America. The Land Cruiser only achieves an EPA-estimated 13 miles per gallon city, 17 mpg highway, and 14 combined. Thankfully, it only requires regular unleaded instead of more expensive premium gas.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The Toyota Land Cruiser can fit eight or five passengers, depending on trim. Standard models receive a third row that fits three across, while the Heritage Edition loses the rear seat in honor of Land Cruiser models of days past.

The Land Cruiser is a large SUV and it boasts significant interior room. Standard models have 16.1 cubic feet of space behind the third row, and 41.4 cubic feet behind the second row, and 82.8 cubic feet with both rows folded. The Heritage Edition features 53.5 cubic feet of space behind the second row.

Safety Features

Like many other models from the automaker, the Land Cruiser comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense P, which includes automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control.

Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, a surround-view camera, and front and rear parking sensors are also standard.

Connectivity

The current Land Cruiser is anything but cutting edge, and its hefty price tag mostly reflects the bespoke engineering and production line that isn’t lifted from anything else in the Toyota stable. Additionally, most of the technology baked into the Land Cruisers is focused on off-road driving instead of advanced connectivity as seen with other luxury vehicles.

That said, the Land Cruiser does come standard with a large 9-inch infotainment touchscreen with navigation, satellite radio, Bluetooth, wireless charging, and voice recognition.

Land Cruiser - From $86,640

The base level Land Cruiser comes equipped with everything Toyota could cram into it, including ventilated front seats, a 10-way power driver seat, a heated steering wheel, four-zone climate control, keyless entry, push button start, and a moonroof.

Being somewhat more family-oriented than the Heritage Edition, the standard Land Cruiser receives a third row that fits three across, 12 cup holders and bottle holders, a cooler in the center console, and semi-aniline leather upholstery.

The only option available is the Rear Seat Entertainment System ($2,200), which adds a DVD player and two 11.6-inch screens to keep the rug rats occupied on longer journeys.

Heritage Edition - From $88,970

At first glance, the Heritage Edition seems like it offers less than the standard Land Cruiser, but for a higher price. It doesn't receive the third row or the center console cooler, and the seats are trimmed with standard black leather instead of the more upscale semi-aniline.

However, it does come with a few upgrades that help celebrate the off-road prowess, making the Heritage Edition a better choice for those who frequently go on overland expeditions into the bush.

This trim gets bronze BBS forged aluminum alloy wheels, all-weather floor mats, and a Yakima MegaWarrior roof rack that's ready for adventure. Additionally, the Heritage Edition deletes the running boards and lower body side moldings from the standard version to give it more ground clearance.

CarsDirect Tip

If you want a 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition, you’ll need to act fast and search far because the number offered will be very limited. That said, most families will probably be better off with the standard model due to the extra row and luxuries that make it better for longer trips.
