2020 Volvo S60 OVERVIEW

What's New

One year removed from its third-generation introduction, the 2020 Volvo S60 returns with a few changes of note. The visual instrument panel is now standard across the model lineup. Also, lane keeping assist is added to the blind-spot monitoring system.

Choosing Your Volvo S60

The Volvo S60 is available in four trims: Momentum, R-Design, Inscription, and Polestar Engineered. Pricing starts at $37,045 including destination for the Momentum and hits $66,440 for the Polestar Engineered

Engine Choices

Volvo supplies three engine choices, with each based on a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. You’ll find turbocharged, supercharged and turbocharged, and plug-in hybrid options.

Engine TypeHorsepowerTorqueFuel Economy (Combined)
T5 2.0L Turbo 4-Cylinder 250 hp258 lb-ft27 mpg
T6 2.0L Turbo and Supercharged 4-Cylinder 316 hp295 lb-ft 25 mpg
T8 2.0L 4-Cylinder Plug-In Hybrid400 hp495 lb-ft30 mpg
Polestar Engineered T8 4-Cylinder Plug-In Hybrid415 hp494 lb-ftNot Rated

The T5 and T6 are available on the bottom three trims, the standard T8 is reserved for the R-Design and Inscription, while the Polestar Engineered T8 is exclusively found in the range-topping trim.

The T5 is only available with front-wheel drive, while the T6 and both T8 powertrains come exclusively with all-wheel drive. Gear swaps are handled by an eight-speed automatic transmission. The T8 models have an EPA-estimated 22-mile all-electric range.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The Volvo S60 is a compact sedan with room for five, measuring a few inches longer than its German rivals. The front seats are roomy, comfortable, and supportive. The rear seat holds two fairly comfortably or three in a pinch.

Cargo space measures just 11.6 cubic feet, which is below the norm. The rear seat folds down for added cargo room.

Safety Features

Volvo’s leadership in all things safety is legendary. It comes as no surprise that the S60 has a full roster of safety equipment available. All S60 models come with lane keeping assist and automatic emergency braking.

The R-Design and up add blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear automatic emergency braking, and front and rear parking sensors. The Polestar Engineered gets adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, and a surround-view camera system. These features are available on lower trims through add-on packages.

Volvo equips the S60 with a 9-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, wi-fi hotspot capability, two USB ports, Bluetooth, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility. Navigation becomes standard starting at the R-Design.

Momentum - From $37,045

The standard Momentum model has such features as hammer-shaped LED headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, a dynamic chassis, C-shaped taillights, and dual round tailpipes.

Inside, the cabin is simple, yet sophisticated with a nice balance of tech features and style. Imitation leather seats, iron ore inlays, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a leather-topped shifter are standard. The instrument panel is composed of a 12.3-inch digital display.

Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel ($750) are a sensible upgrade bundle for this model.

R-Design - From $44,540

The R-Design brings sporting flair to the S60. Matte black diamond-cut wheels, black mirror caps, and wide dual exhaust tips dress this model. Inside, the R-Design has metal mesh inlays, an R-Design steering wheel, and sport bucket front seats. This trim gains power front seats, a Harman Karman audio system, navigation, and four-zone climate control.

Adaptive cruise control, the head-up display, and the surround-view camera system, among other things, are bundled in the $2,500 Advanced Package.

Inscription - From $44,540

There’s no price change from R-Design to Inscription, as the former takes a sporty route to the luxury tapestry of the Inscription. Most features are the same except for LED fog lights and 10-way power front seats with four-way lumbar support.

The interior can be enhanced with the Luxury Package ($2,200), which includes Nappa leather upholstery, front seat massage functionality, and front seat power adjustable side support.

Polestar Engineered - From $66,440

It’s quite a leap in price from the Inscription trim to the Polestar Engineered. This difference is halved when upgrading from the Inscription with the T8 plug-in hybrid.

Polestar is Volvo’s performance brand, which means this model has lightweight forged wheels, high-performance Brembo brakes, and Ohlins dampers. It also benefits from a slight boost in performance, 15 horsepower, over the Inscription T8.

Other upgrades include 19-inch wheels, exterior trim embellishments, and an upgraded exhaust system. Nappa leather seats and a Bowers and Wilkins audio system are among the interior changes.

CarsDirect Tip

The 2020 Volvo S60 R-Design and Inscription models offer a good number of the amenities we expect in a compact luxury sedan. We’d opt for the T6 version, which delivers robust acceleration and faultless handling, rivaling the best sedans from Germany.
