The 2020 Volvo S90 drops an engine and gains a trim. The base T5 engine is dropped, leaving the more powerful T6 to shore up the bottom of the range, while the mid-grade R-Design trim joins the lineup. Additionally, parking sensors now come standard, and the T8 hybrid powertrain’s battery is slightly larger.
2020 Volvo S90 Overview
Choosing Your Volvo S90
The Volvo S90 is available in three trims: Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription. Pricing starts at $51,545 including destination for the Momentum, while the R-Design and Inscription carry the same starting price of $54,645.
No longer available with the T5 engine, the S90 uses only two powertrains for 2020. The supercharged and turbocharged T6 is impressive enough, but it’s surpassed by the powerful and efficient T8 plug-in hybrid.
|Engine Type||Horsepower||Torque||Fuel Economy (Combined)|
|T6 2.0L Turbo and Supercharged 4-Cylinder||316 hp||295 lb-ft||25 mpg|
|T8 2.0L Turbo and Supercharged 4-Cylinder Plug-In Hybrid||400 hp||472 lb-ft||30 mpg|
The Momentum is only available with the T6, while the R-Design and Inscription have the option of either. Upgrading to the T8 powertrain costs $9,550.
Both engines come with standard all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The hybrid engine is powerful enough for a 0-60 mph time under five seconds, and it saves you money at the pump.
Passenger and Cargo Capacity
The Volvo S90 can seat five passengers in comfort with more than 40 inches of rear leg room. The S90’s 13.5 cubic feet of trunk space is on the small side for the class, but the rear seats fold flat to boost versatility. Thankfully, opting for the hybrid powertrain doesn’t cut into cargo space.
Safety has always been a strength of Volvo, and the S90 is no exception. Every S90 gets the works: automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and a semi-autonomous driving system that can take over steering duties for a few seconds. Don’t worry – the steering wheel vibrates when it needs you to take control again.
A $2,850 Advanced Package is available on all trims that adds a surround-view camera system, a head-up display, and adaptive LED headlights. A parking autopilot feature is a $200 standalone option.
Tech is another of the S90’s areas of expertise. A 9-inch infotainment touchscreen is front and center, boasting voice control, navigation, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. A 12.3-inch digital driver’s display is also standard, and there are multiple sound system upgrades for audiophiles.
The S90 Momentum starts with an impressive set of luxury features. Leather upholstery is standard, as are dual-zone automatic climate control, LED headlights, 18-inch rims, a panoramic moonroof, heated front seats, and memory settings for the driver's seat. The interior is trimmed with birch wood.
Heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel are bundled together for $750, while a Harman Kardon audio system is on top for $800.
The R-Design trim adds a host of sporty accents along with a few creature comforts. The exterior gets 19-inch rims, black mirror caps, and chrome accents. The interior gains the Harman Kardon speaker system, four-zone automatic climate control, power-operated sun shades, and sport seats with upgraded leather. R-Design badging is sprinkled liberally throughout.
An adaptive air suspension that monitors the road and adjusts according to four selectable drive modes is a $1,200 option, an even fancier Bowers and Wilkins audio system is available for $3,200, and full Nappa leather upholstery with special R-Design seats are bundled for $750.
The Inscription focuses on pure luxury. Nappa leather upholstery comes standard on heated and ventilated front seats with contrast stitching. The front seats get power-adjustable side supports, and the interior is trimmed in walnut wood. The rest of the R-Design’s interior upgrades are included here, too.
If that’s not enough, the Inscription can get massage-capable front seats as part of the $3,450 Luxury Package. The bundle also includes heated and ventilated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, a Nubuck leather headliner, and a luxury rear armrest.
Although the 2020 Volvo S90 Momentum is well equipped in its own right, the Inscription offers a good deal of luxury for a modest price increase. Either way, the S90 offers solid value against German rivals.
