Overview

What's New

With each passing model year, the selection of electric vehicles becomes more interesting, diverse, and mainstream. Unlike 10 years ago, electrics are no longer eclectic; they've since become a viable category that is increasingly appealing to ordinary consumers.

Nowhere is that more apparent than with vehicles such as the 2021 Audi e-tron. At first glance, it could be any other gas-powered Audi crossover. Yet, behind its facsimile of a grille hides an all-electric powertrain that returns up to 222 miles of range.

The e-tron debuted in 2019, and Audi is showering it with a host of updates this year. Chief among these is a new base model that lowers the starting price to $66,995; that's a full $11,400 less than the cheapest 2020 itinerant.

Other updates include a front motor that can now be entirely decoupled from the drivetrain and an increase of usable battery voltage. Those two improvements lead to a higher 222 miles of total range.

Choosing Your Audi e-tron

The e-tron comes in three trim levels: Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige. Pricing starts at $66,995 including destination for the base model and climbs to $80,195 for the range-topping Prestige – this all before federal tax credits.

The e-tron is also available in two body styles: the regular crossover and the racier Sportback.

Engine Choices

All e-trons come with a 95-kWh battery that juices up two electric motors. One motor powers the rear axle, the other handles the front. Power is typically directed rearward except for instances of low traction or heavy throttle. Quattro all-wheel drive is standard.

This setup puts out a total of 355 horsepower and 414 pound-feet of torque, but an overboost feature temporarily allows for a total of 402 hp and 490 lb-ft. That quick blast of extra power helps the e-tron get from 0-60 mph in 5.5 seconds.

With the standard e-tron, drivers can expect an EPA-estimated 78 miles per gallon of gasoline equivalent (MPGe) combined). The Sportback model is a touch less efficient at 77 MPGe combined. Sportbacks also have a slightly lower total range of 218 miles compared to the e-tron's 222 miles.

Charging time for the e-tron on a 240-volt outlet is about nine hours if the battery is fully depleted. When hooked up to a fast-charging system, 80% of charge can be restored in 30 minutes.

The e-tron can tow up to 4,000 pounds, enough to pull a small boat or camper. Just don't expect to get the full 222 miles of range with a trailer attached.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

Both the e-tron and e-tron Sportback seat five passengers. Rear-seat roominess is better in the standard e-tron, which has a more upright roof that affords better head room. Both variants share the same 39.1 inches of second-row leg room.

The e-tron carves out 28.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the back seats, which grows to 56.5 cubic feet once the rear seatbacks are folded down. The Sportback's sloping roofline reduces that to 27.2 and 54.5 cubic feet, respectively.

Safety Features

The e-tron comes standard with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors, and automatic high beams. Moving up to the Premium Plus brings adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, a surround-view camera system, and traffic sign recognition.

On the Premium, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and lane keeping assist are bundled in the Convenience Plus package ($3,500).

Connectivity

As an electric vehicle, it's no surprise that technology takes a front seat in the e-tron. Highlighting the tech-heavy interior is a triple dose of screens ranging from 8.6 inches to 12.3 inches.

The smallest touchscreen sits low in the center stack and handles climate controls. Above that is a 10.1 inch touchscreen that is uses for infotainment purposes and has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability as well as navigation, satellite radio, Bluetooth, and HD radio. In front of the driver sits the 12.3 inch all-digital instrument cluster that offers customizable menus and an array of vehicle and infotainment information.

The Premium Plus comes standard with a wireless charging pad, a phone signal booster, and a Bang and Olufsen audio system. The Prestige also gets a head-up display.

Audi e-tron

Premium - From $66,995

The cheapest e-tron is appropriately luxurious and includes four-zone climate control, leather upholstery, heated front seats, eight-way power front seats, a power tailgate, and a heated steering wheel.

Standard exterior features include 20-inch wheels, LED headlights, roof rails, a rear spoiler, and power-folding and auto-dimming exterior mirrors.

The most significant option package is the $3,500 Convenience Plus package, which has come about as the result of direct consumer feedback. It essentially bundles a number of active safety features that includes lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and a surround-view camera. The package also bundles in the Black Optic trim package, which paints all the exterior trim a glossy black.

Premium Plus - From $75,895

Stepping up to the Premium Plus adds glass and aluminum switchgear, dual charge ports, 12-way power seats with ventilation, heated rear seats, matrix-style LED lights, wireless charging, and the Bang and Olufsen audio system. This model also gets adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, and the surround-view camera.

Prestige - From $80,195

The top trim is the Prestige, and it gets features such as massaging front seats, a head-up display, multi-color ambient lighting, rear sunshades, and leather trimmings for the doors, armrests, and dashboard.

On the options list are 21-inch wheels ($1,250) and digital matrix LED headlights ($3,000).

CarsDirect Tip

Our pick is a 2021 Audi e-tron Premium with the Convenience Plus package. Generously equipped with lavish features and yet still ringing in under $70,000, it's the smartest choice here.
