Overview

What's New

The 2021 Audi Q8 receives some new standard and optional equipment. The entry-level Premium model now comes with blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while a heated steering wheel and a surround-view camera are now available through the Convenience Package.

Meanwhile, the midrange Premium Plus trim gets a heated steering wheel as standard and offers a brand-new Executive Package, which includes adaptive cruise control, heated rear seats, and more.

Choosing Your Audi Q8

The Q8 is available in Audi's familiar three trim levels: Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige. Pricing starts at $69,295 including destination for the Premium and goes up to $78,945 for the Prestige.

Engine Choices

Every Q8 is powered by Audi’s proven 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine, which goes by the moniker 55 TFSI. It generates 335 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. Power is supplied to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The Q8 returns an EPA-estimated 18 miles per gallon city, 23 mpg highway, and 20 combined.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The Q8 can seat five passengers in comfort, featuring 40.2 inches of rear leg room. Cargo capacity stands at 30.5 cubic feet with the rear seats in place, or 60.7 once they're folded down.

Safety Features

You’d expect plenty of safety features on an SUV costing between $69,000 and $79,000, and every Q8 delivers with automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high beams.

The Premium Plus is further equipped with a surround-view camera, while the Prestige comes with adaptive cruise control.

Connectivity

The Q8 has a stunning interior that features a 10.1-inch upper and an 8.6-inch lower touchscreen at the center of the dashboard. Navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster are also included.

The Premium Plus trim gets standard wireless charging and a Bang and Olufsen audio system; the Prestige features a head-up display.

Audi Q8

Premium - From $69,295

Premium Q8 models ride on 20-inch wheels with an adaptive damping suspension. It features a panoramic sunroof, LED headlights and taillights, a power tailgate, and power-folding and heated side mirrors with memory. The inside features three-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, and heated front seats.

New for 2021 is the $1,250 Convenience Package. It combines a smartphone signal booster, wireless charger, a surround-view camera, a heated steering wheel, and auto-dimming side mirrors.

Premium Plus - From $73,145

Fitted with larger 21-inch wheels, Premium Plus models also receive four-zone automatic climate control and ventilated front seats. The stereo is a 17-speaker Bang & Olufsen system, and Audi's wireless charger and signal booster come standard. The surround-view camera is also a welcome upgrade.

For $2,750, the Adaptive Chassis Package adds all-wheel steering and an adaptive air suspension, improving the Q8’s road manners. The $2,800 Executive Package adds adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, heated rear seats, and matrix-design LED headlights with animation.

Prestige - From $78,945

The Prestige is all about luxury, with power soft-close doors, leather across the dashboard, heated rear seats, and second-row sunshades. The head-up display and adaptive cruise control also take it to the next level. It also gets the matrix-design LED headlights that are adaptive.

The $6,300 Luxury Package covers the front seats in Valcona leather with massage functionality and memory for the passenger, while dual-pane acoustic glass and an Alcantara headliner surround a cabin swathed in leather from the center console and instrument panel to the door armrests.

CarsDirect Tip

The features on higher-end 2021 Audi Q8 models are nice to have, but the Premium trim does a fine job of transporting its occupants in comfort and luxury. If you can live without a high-end stereo, this is the model to go for, with the added benefit of keeping the Q8’s price below $70,000.

A different beast. The 2021 Audi Q8 may share its platform with the Audi Q7, but don’t let that fool you. The Q8 bears the same large trapezoidal grille, but it’s lower and sleeker than its full-size sibling.

Most notably, the Q8 loses the third row that's found in the Q7. That may rule it out for family duty, but it makes the best of the space by allocating more room for second-row passengers. Cargo space gets cut as a result. The Q8 holds 30.5 cubic feet behind the seats, which is about 5 fewer than the Q7.

For 2021, the Q8 gets more standard features in lower trims. It was already a luxurious package, but the addition of extra safety tech on the base trim is welcome.

The Q8 raises one big question: for a car that holds less and carries fewer people, how does Audi charge more than the Q7? This is an eternal mystery of crossover SUV coupes, but part of the answer lies in …

Speed, speed, and more speed. The Audi Q8 gets a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine, which is optional on the Q7. A smooth eight-speed automatic transmission helps the Q8 scoot from 0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds, which is impressive given a weight of about 2.5 tons.

The Q8 also comes in SQ8 and RS Q8 variants, which get even more power. The RS Q8 produces a massive 591 horsepower and needs only 3.6 seconds to do the 0-60 mph sprint.

But more impressive than the power is the handling. Steering is accurate and composed, and upper trims get an adaptive air suspension that masks road imperfections. The RS Q8 lapped the Nürburgring in less than eight minutes, setting a new record for SUVs.

Unsurprisingly, all that performance yields poor fuel economy. The EPA hasn’t released official 2021 numbers, but last year’s Q8 achieved 18 miles per gallon combined.

Audi Q8

Flagship luxury. Don’t tell the A8 sedan, but the 2021 Audi Q8 may be Audi’s new flagship. Standard equipment is comprehensive even on the base Premium trim, with soft leather upholstery and more than 40 inches of rear leg room.

Screens are everywhere – the driver gets a 12.3-inch digital instrument display, while dual central touchscreens control infotainment and vehicle functions. All of them are excellent, and a standard panoramic moonroof ensures that you won’t forget about nature either.

The midrange Premium Plus is our Goldilocks of the lineup. Four-zone climate control, upgraded headlights, and a premium audio system justify the price, and the air suspension is available as a recommended upgrade.

Still an Audi. The Audi Q8 has only been in production for a few years, but it’s an Audi through and through. That starts with safety, which was impressive enough to earn both an IIHS Top Safety Pick award and five stars from the NHTSA last model year.

Farther up the tech ladder, Audi’s optional driver assistance system controls steering and speed on long highway stretches and slow commutes. It works well.

Also typical for Audi is a relatively conservative exterior. The Q8 is easily identifiable, but it won’t draw double takes the way competitors from Porsche or BMW might.

And of course, the Q8 is typically expensive. Prices start just shy of $70,000, but expect to spend a good deal more after diving into the options list. For some buyers, that may be a tough sell on a crossover that can’t seat seven. If the kids have flown the nest, however, the Q8 is a worthwhile luxury experience.

Final thoughts. There’s no way around it – the 2021 Audi Q8 isn’t as practical as the Q7. Instead, it makes a case for itself based on performance, luxury, and technology, all of which are among the best on the market. The RS Q8 offers shocking performance for a crossover, but even a base Q8 feels special. For a luxury flagship, that’s the most important part.
