Expert Rating

Not Available

Unlike other websites and magazines, our ratings are not based solely on a singular road test, but rather a more encompassing batch of criteria: quality, safety, comfort, performance, fuel economy, reliability history and value. When comparing vehicles using our Rating System, it's important to note that the rating earned by each vehicle correlates only to the models within its class. For example, a compact car cannot be compared to a SUV—They are different vehicles altogether.

You can interpret our ratings in the following way:

5-Star: Outstanding vehicle. Only the most exceptional vehicles achieve this rating.

4-Star: Very Good vehicle. Very good and close to being the best vehicle in its class.

3-Star: Good vehicle. Decent, but not quite the best. Often affordable, but lacking key features found in vehicles of the same class.

2-Star: Below average vehicle. Not recommended, and lacking attributes a car buyer would come to expect for the price.

1-Star: Poor vehicle. Simply does not deserve to be on the road.

2021 BMW M8 Overview

Anthony Sophinos
Automotive Editor

What's New

The 2021 BMW M8 is the biggest, baddest BMW coupe in the lineup – or at least it was. Blame the COVID pandemic, blame market forces, blame changing tastes; whatever the reason, BMW isn't importing the coupe and convertible variants of the M8 for 2021. This only leaves the four-door Gran Coupe as the sole offering.

From what we can tell, the loss of the two-door M8 isn't set in stone; depending on customer interest and economic developments, there's a chance the M8 coupe and convertible return for 2022.

Choosing Your BMW M8

With the coupe and convertible gone, all BMW M8 variants are of the four-door Gran Coupe variety. The M8 Gran Coupe is priced from $131,995, which includes destination and a Gas Guzzler tax.

Engine Choices

All M8 models get a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8. It ordinarily makes 600 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque, but those who opt for the $13,000 Competition Package enjoy an additional 17 hp, as well as unique tuning and a wider torque band. It takes the M8 3.0 seconds to go from 0-60 mph.

All models use the same eight-speed automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels. It offers multiple shift modes with varying degrees of shift comfort and speed.

The M8 is rated by the EPA for just 15 miles per gallon city, 21 mpg highway, and 17 combined.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The Gran Coupe is a four-door sedan with a raked roofline and frameless door glass. Though there's five seat belts in total, the limited interior space means the middle-rear seat is best left empty. Rear leg room measures 36.6 inches, which is a bit short for a 200.9-inch long sedan, and rear head room is a mere 37 inches.

Cargo space in the trunk measures 15.5 cubic feet.

Safety Features

The M8 gets automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, and lane departure warning as standard.

Most other driving aids can only be had by purchasing either the Driving Assistance Package ($1,100) or the Driving Assistance Professional Package ($1,700). The former includes a surround-view camera, blind-spot monitoring, a video recorder, audible parking sensors, and automated parking system. The Pro version adds adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist and an evasion aid.

Connectivity

The M8 features BMW's most advanced iteration of its iDrive infotainment software. It's displayed through a 10.25-inch dash-mounted touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

Standard features of the system include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite and HD radio, gesture control, voice recognition, wi-fi capability, wireless charging, and navigation. Cloud connectivity allows users with multiple BMWs to easily transfer their iDrive settings from car to car.

M8 Gran Coupe - From $130,995

Standard features on the M8 include Merino leather upholstery, 20-inch wheels, 16-way power front seats, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, four-zone climate control, LED lighting, and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.

The most expensive package is the $13,000 Competition Package. Headlining this option group is additional engine tuning that wrings out an extra 17 hp. Other features include a track drive mode, an M Sport exhaust, extended black exterior trim, and a leather and Alcantara interior with color-matching seat belts.

Standalone options include M carbon ceramic brakes ($8,150) and a Bowers and Wilkins audio system ($3,400).

CarsDirect Tip

The Competition Package might sound enticing, but the base 2021 BMW M8 is plenty fast and luxurious in its own right. We would buy it as is – no options necessary.
