2021 BMW Z4 Overview

What's New

The 2021 BMW Z4 now comes with a few more standard features. Android Auto and satellite radio are included across the lineup.

Pricing for the available Driving Assistance Package goes up to $700, as parking sensors are now included. A wireless smartphone charger and M Sport brakes with red calipers are newly optional.

Compared to the competition, the Z4 still continues to offer consumers something few automakers are willing to offer these days – great performance while being able to enjoy warm weather. A twin to the hardtop Toyota Supra, the Z4 boasts excellent performance with BMW’s track record for high-end interiors and loads of tech features.

Choosing Your BMW Z4

BMW offers the Z4 in two trim levels: 30i and M40i. Prices start at $50,695 including destination for the 30i and go up to $64,695 for the M40i.

Engine Choices

Two engines are available for the Z4, further separating the models. The 30i starts with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder motor, while the M40i upgrades to a 3.0-liter turbo six-cylinder.

Engine TypeHorsepowerTorqueFuel Economy (Combined)
2.0L Turbo 4-Cylinder255 hp294 lb-ft28 mpg
3.0L Turbo 6-Cylinder382 hp368 lb-ft25 mpg

Both engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and come with rear-wheel drive. Three drive modes – Comfort, Sport, and Sport Plus – are standard with both engines and help drivers cater the roadster to their liking.

Both engines provide good performance, but it’s the M40i’s inline-six that we’re more impressed with. Refined, smooth, and gutsy, the six-cylinder is worth the upgrade and doesn’t affect fuel economy too much.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The BMW Z4 is a convertible sports car that only has two seats. It’s a snug cabin, but consumers will find a decent amount of head and leg room. Being a convertible, the Z4 offers just 9.9 cubic feet of cargo space.

Safety Features

BMW offers a variety of advanced safety features on the Z4, though many are optional. Automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, traffic sign recognition, and automatic high beams are standard.

The $700 Driving Assistance Package brings lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and parking sensors. Parking sensors are available on their own for $200, while adaptive cruise control costs $1,200. An automated parking system is available on the M40i for $400.

The Z4 comes with a well-sized 10.25-inch infotainment system that now includes both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster, navigation, Bluetooth, HD and satellite radio, and two USB ports are also standard.

Wi-fi hot spot capability and wireless charging are available for $500, or alongside a head-up display through the Premium Package. A 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system is available with the Executive Package.

30i - From $50,695

The base sDrive30i comes with everything one would expect from an upscale sports car from BMW. Synthetic leather upholstery, 14-way power front seats, two-zone automatic climate control, 18-inch wheels, LED headlights, and rain-sensing windshield wipers are standard.

The $1,150 Convenience Package adds blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, remote keyless entry, and lumbar support for the front seats. The Premium Package ($2,750) builds on that and adds a head-up display, heated front seats, wireless charging, and wi-fi hot spot capability. The $5,250 Executive Package inlcudes all that and adds adaptive LED headlights, the Harman Kardon audio system, and leather seating.

M40i - From $64,695

In addition to coming with the more powerful engine, the M40i also adds stiffer suspension, an M Sport differential, M Sport brakes, improved aerodynamics, heated seats, a heated steering wheel, keyless entry, and a hands-free trunk.

The Premium ($1,400) and Executive ($3,900) packages return for cheaper thanks to the additional standard equipment.

CarsDirect Tip

If you plan on spending time on the track or going on some spirited drives regularly, the 2021 BMW Z4 M40i is the way to go. It’s pricey, but doesn’t need many optional features to feel upscale. For everyone else, the standard 30i offers plenty of performance and, with the Premium Package selected, feels plenty upscale.
