Overview

What's New

The 2021 Envision wears an all-new style and features more standard safety equipment, upgraded connectivity, a new engine, and a revised trim lineup.

Choosing Your Buick Envision

The simplified Envision lineup consists of three trim levels. The Preferred is $32,995 with destination, the Essence is $36,995, and the Avenir is $41,395.

Engine Choices

The 2021 Envision is solely powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine whose power output, at 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, is less than last year’s high-powered engine but is more than what the base engine could muster.

A nine-speed automatic routes power to the front wheels while all-wheel drive is available on all trims for $1,800. Despite the added oomph, the 2021 Envision is more efficient than the most efficient 2020 configuration and earns 26 mpg combined in front-wheel-drive form and 25 when equipped with AWD.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The 2021 Envision remains a five-seater and is 182.5 inches in overall length which is slightly less than the 2020 model although its wheelbase is longer, at 109.4-inches.

Inside, the Envision’s cabin provides 39.6 inches of rear-passenger headroom and 39.3 inches of legroom and there is 25.2 cubic feet of space behind the second-row seatback and 52.7 cubic feet with the seatbacks folded.

The Envision’s towing capacity is 1,500 pounds which is on par with the competition.

Safety Features

The 2021 Envision is much better equipped than last year’s model in terms of safety equipment. Automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, lane keep assist, rear parking sensors, automatic high-beam, and a following-distance indicator are all standard features as is On-Star with a three month trial period.

A surround-view system, front parking assist, and a head-up display are available in the mid-level Essence trim while adaptive cruise control and enhanced driver assist systems (for braking and parking) are available only on the top-tier Avenir trim. The 2021 Envision has not yet been rated by the IIHS and NHTSA.

Connectivity

The base trim is standard with an 8.0-inch touchscreen display, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, SiriusXM, USB ports, and 4G-LTE Wi-Fi hotspot capability.

The Essence trim and Avenir trims are equipped with a 10.2-inch touchscreen that utilizes Buick’s latest infotainment system, an auxiliary input jack, and an upgraded audio system. Wireless charging and a Bose 9-speaker sound system are standard on the Avenir.

Buick Envision

Preferred - From $32,995

The base trim is well equipped. Its exterior includes silver 18-inch wheels, LED headlights and taillights, heated mirrors with auto-dimming on the driver’s side, silver roof rails, and proximity entry while the cabin receives heated front cloth seats with eight-way power-adjustability for the driver and manual six-way for the passenger, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and rear passenger air vents as standard equipment.

Interior ambient lighting, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a 4.2-inch driver-information display in the gauge cluster are also noteworthy inclusions. A $1,750 Comfort and Convenience package is available and adds many desirable features such as a hands-free power tailgate, an air ionizer and air quality system, heated front seats and steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, and remote engine start.

The Sport Touring Package brings a dark styling theme to the exterior with 20-inch dark-finished wheels, a unique grille with a dark gloss surround, and gloss black roof rails, mirror caps, and lower body trim for $1,325.

Essence - From $36,995

The Essence trim is equipped with the features of the Comfort and Convenience trim plus leather seats, memory positioning, and an 8.0-inch driver’s display.

The Technology Package I is offered for $2,500 and includes the added safety features, Bose audio, and navigation.

Avenir - From $41,395

The Avenir trim receives upscale styling touches such as a body-colored wheel well trim, lower body cladding, and front and rear lower fascia, clear rear taillights, and silver 20-inch wheels. The seats are wrapped in diamond-perforated quilted leather and the fronts gain ventilation, the rears receive heating, and the driver’s seat gets a massage feature.

Navigation, a 110-volt power outlet, and the features of the Technology I Package are also included. The Technology II Package is available for $1,965 and includes the additional safety capabilities, upgraded headlights, rear camera mirror with washer, and active dampers for an improved ride.

All-New Body. The 2021 Buick Envision has been hitting the gym. Buick’s compact crossover gets a full redesign this year, and the biggest change is a sculpted body. The new generation is slightly shorter than the last, and in our opinion, it looks much better. A wider grille is balanced by sleek curves and muscular haunches, with a few tasteful angles and creases to keep things interesting.

Looks aside, the Envision uses its space well. Passengers in both rows have ample room to stretch, and the center console hides a generous storage bin. The optional panoramic sunroof cuts into head room — we’d recommend skipping it.

Cargo space starts at 25.2 cu ft and maxes out at 52.7. That’s on the low side for the class — you’ll find more space in a BMW X3 or Volvo XC60. This is one area where the shorter proportions hurt the Envision, but it’s still a reasonably practical pick.

Upgraded Performance. The 2021 Envision gets a new powertrain to match its exterior. The turbo four-cylinder engine makes 228 horsepower, which is enough to make the Envision feel perky in most circumstances. The nine-speed automatic transmission is smooth and confident.

The new Envision also gets a more sophisticated suspension. The thin steering wheel doesn’t offer much feedback, but the chassis is composed and comfortable over rough pavement. The optional adaptive dampers are even more plush, but they don’t play well with the top-trip Avenir’s 20-inch wheels.

Not all the news is good. Towing capacity maxes out at 1,500 pounds, which is low even for a compact crossover. Combined fuel economy is a mediocre 26 mpg, and unlike many rivals, the Envision offers no hybrid or plug-in options.

Buick Envision

Budget Luxury. The Envision occupies an odd place in the price spectrum. It’s more expensive than mainstream models like the Honda CR-V, but cheaper than luxury titans like the BMW X3.

For the price, it feels pleasantly premium inside. Material quality is high, and the design is minimalist but attractive. Seats are supportive in both rows, and upholstered in either synthetic or genuine leather. The infotainment screen is tilted more than we’d like, but otherwise, it’s hard to fault the interior.

Upgrade to the Avenir trim and you’ll be treated to quilted leather, ventilated front seats, and a massage-capable driver’s seat. It’s a compelling luxury cruiser, although it adds nearly $10,000 to the starting price.

Pricey Packages. Including the Avenir, the Envision lineup comprises only three trims. In the base Preferred trim, standard features are good: automatic emergency braking, synthetic upholstery, and an eight-inch infotainment touchscreen with smartphone compatibility.

Stray into the package list, and the price rises in a hurry. Upgraded tech like a head-up display and Bose sound adds thousands to the price, denting the Envision’s budget-lux appeal. Another sore spot: a three-year/36,000-mile warranty is worse than some rivals.

If you want more creature comforts, we’d skip the packages and look to the mid-range Essence trim. It gets real leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a larger touchscreen while keeping the price well under $40,000.

Final Thoughts. The 2021 Envision is a significant upgrade over the previous generation. It could use a better warranty and more cargo space, but it feels premium inside and looks the part. As a cheaper alternative to the luxury establishment, it’s worth a long look.
