Expert Rating

Not Available

Unlike other websites and magazines, our ratings are not based solely on a singular road test, but rather a more encompassing batch of criteria: quality, safety, comfort, performance, fuel economy, reliability history and value. When comparing vehicles using our Rating System, it's important to note that the rating earned by each vehicle correlates only to the models within its class. For example, a compact car cannot be compared to a SUV—They are different vehicles altogether.

You can interpret our ratings in the following way:

5-Star: Outstanding vehicle. Only the most exceptional vehicles achieve this rating.

4-Star: Very Good vehicle. Very good and close to being the best vehicle in its class.

3-Star: Good vehicle. Decent, but not quite the best. Often affordable, but lacking key features found in vehicles of the same class.

2-Star: Below average vehicle. Not recommended, and lacking attributes a car buyer would come to expect for the price.

1-Star: Poor vehicle. Simply does not deserve to be on the road.

What you must know before buying the Chevrolet Spark

John Diether
Automotive Editor - September 8, 2020
  • 2021 Spark arriving; 2020s still in stock
  • Get 15% off MSRP on 2020s
  • Low price means no lease specials
  • See dealers for APR options

What's in store:

The carryover 2021 Spark had started flowing into dealers nationwide, and the 2020 Spark remain in adequate supply. While the Spark isn't as common as other Chevrolet models, selection is usually sufficient to meet demand.

Dealer stock consists almost entirely of the base LS and mid-level 1LT models. Few buyers are interested in the line-topping 2LT, and you'll be hard pressed to find one sitting on a lot. The ACTIV model, which features crossover-like styling, is also somewhat rare.

Chevy has no plans to drop the Spark, despite the recent cancellation of many GM car lines.

Unless otherwise noted, offers are available on a national basis and will expire September 30, 2020.

Take 15% off:

For the second month, Chevy is offering 15% off the MSRP of the 2020 Spark to all buyers. This equates to handsome savings on the Spark, which usually doesn't carry substantial rebates because of its low MSRP.

The discount on the line-topping 2LT, for example, works out to $2,894.

There are no cash offers yet on the incoming 2021 Spark.

Looking to lease?

There is no national lease offer at this time, which isn't surprising for this model. As with purchasing, we recommend checking the terms at several local dealers before you sign.

If you finance:

Chevy has paused APR promotions on several models lately, including the Spark. Offers will likely resume later this year. For now, you can probably find attractive rates at the dealer level.

2021 Chevrolet Spark Overview

What's New

Seeing no major changes, the subcompact 2021 Chevrolet Spark remains the most affordable way to put a Chevy outside your house. Prices are also carried over from last year, while the range retains its same four trims and one engine.

Choosing Your Chevrolet Spark

The Spark range features four trims: LS, 1LT, ACTIV, and 2LT. Pricing starts at $14,395 including destination for the base model and only climbs to $17,795 for the range-topping 2LT.

Engine Choices

The Spark is available exclusively with a 1.4-liter four-cylinder gas engine. This produces a modest 98 horsepower and 94 pound-feet of torque, which is fed to the front wheels through either a five-speed manual or continuously variable transmission (CVT). The manual is standard across the range, while the CVT is an $1,100 upgrade.

With the manual, the Spark returns an EPA-estimated 29 miles per gallon city, 38 mpg highway, and 33 combined. This drops to 29/37/32 mpg (city/highway/combined) for the ACTIV model. The CVT Spark achieves 30/38/33 mpg, or 30/37/33 for the ACTIV.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The subcompact Chevy Spark only has seating for four passengers. There's 11.1 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, which expands to 27.2 cubes when they're dropped.

Safety Features

The budget-oriented Spark doesn't come with any active safety features. The only thing buyers will find standard in the lineup are the 2LT's rear parking sensors.

People hoping to find these safety technologies in option packages are also going to be disappointed. Only on the 2LT with the CVT does the Driver Confidence Package, which adds automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, and lane departure warning, become available. At least it's only $295.

Connectivity

The LT trim comes with a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, wi-fi capability, Bluetooth, two USB ports, and a four-speaker audio system. All but the base model upgrade to a six-speaker sound system and get satellite radio.

There are no advanced technology features like navigation or smartphone compatibility in this range.

LS - From $14,395

For its budget price, the Spark LS comes with single-zone manual climate control, 15-inch steel wheels, two-way manual front seats, and cloth seating. However, everything from the windows to the seats to the mirrors are adjusted manually, and the keys are rigid, unlike the folding ones found higher up the range.

1LT - From $16,295

Riding on 15-inch aluminum wheels, the 1LT improves with LED daytime running lights and foldable keys. A six-speaker audio system with steering-wheel mounted audio controls enhances the cabin. Cruise control, remote keyless entry, power windows/mirrors/locks, and an alarm system are also standard.

You can select an optional power sunroof for $1,000.

ACTIV - From $17,395

The ACTIV is the first Spark model to receive fog lights, leatherette seating, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and heated front seats. It further benefits from a unique suspension, 15-inch silver wheel, front sill plates, a custom grille, and black front and rear bumpers.

2LT - From $17,795

Distinguished externally by plentiful chrome detailing, 2LT models offer push button start and an enhanced driver information system. This is also the only Spark with rear parking sensors fitted as standard.

The only available option (on models equipped with the CVT) is the affordably priced Driver Confidence Package. It costs $295 and combines automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, and lane departure warning.

CarsDirect Tip

Despite its budget price, the 2021 Chevy Spark LS feels too basic, whereas the 1LT makes a better fit for affordable motoring. If your budget allows, the 2LT is the only model available with vital safety aids like automatic emergency braking.
