Overview

What's New

The 2021 Toyota Camry gets the latest version of the brand's driver assistance safety suite, Safety Sense 2.5 Plus. Updates to the operating system enhance the accuracy and smoothness of key features.

Revised front fascias and wheel styles provide greater differentiation between trims. Touchscreens adopt a floating design, and a rear seat reminder is now standard on all models. The entry-level L trim departs from the lineup.

The current Camry debuted in 2019, and the sporty TRD variant arrived last year.

Choosing Your Toyota Camry

The Camry lineup consists of five trim levels: LE, SE, XLE, XSE, and TRD. Pricing starts at $25,965 including destination for the base LE model and goes up to $33,180 for the TRD.

Engine Choices

The first four Camry trims starts with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. The TRD gets a 3.5-liter V6, which is also available on the XLE and XSE for an extra $5,125.

Engine TypeHorsepowerTorqueFuel Economy (Combined)
2.5L 4-Cylinder203 hp184 lb-ft32 mpg
3.5L V6301 hp267 lb-ft26 mpg

Both engines use an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, while four-cylinder models can get all-wheel drive for $1,400. The V6 is exclusively available with FWD.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The Camry is a midsize sedan with ample room for five passengers. The truck holds 15.1 cubic feet, which is typical for this class.

Safety Features

The standard Toyota Safety Sence 2.5 Plus suite includes adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, automatic high beams, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, and automatic emergency braking.

Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is optional on the LE and SE ($680) and standard on the subsequent trims.

The Driver Assist Package ($830) for the XLE and XSE provides a surround-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, a head-up display, and reverse automatic braking.

The Camry carries the best marks possible when it comes to crash testing. It earns a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA, and was named a Top Safety Pick Plus with the IIHS.

Connectivity

The Camry starts out with a 7-inch touchscreen, six audio speakers, three USB ports, SiriusXM satellite radio, wi-fi capability, and Apple CarPlay and Android Audio compatibility.

The Audio Package Package ($1,115) for the LE and SE adds wireless device charging and a 9-inch touchscreen. Both features are standard on the XLE and XSE. The Navigation Upgrade Package ($1,760) for XLE and XSE provides navigation and a nine-speaker JBL sound system. These are the only trims to offer navigation.

On the TRD, the larger touchscreen and JBL system come in a bundle for $1,585.

Toyota Camry

LE - From $25,965

The LE offers cloth upholstery, a power driver seat, manual climate control, partial LED exterior lighting, a 4.2-inch driver information display, and 17-inch alloy wheels.

Blind-spot monitoring bundles with the Convenience Package costs $1,280. The bundle includes adds proximity key access, push-button start, a universal home remote, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Buyers can bundle all of that with a sunroof for a total of $2,180.

SE - From $27,480

The SE goes in a sporty direction with firmer suspension tuning, a black mesh grille, 18-inch black-accented wheels, and a rear spoiler. The interior receives single-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters, and leatherette SofTex upholstery.

The Nightshade Edition ($700) wears black exterior trim and wheels.

XLE - From $30,865

The Camry XLE features a leather interior with heated front seats, a power passenger seat, wood trim, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Other upgrades include full LED exterior lighting, 18-inch wheels, and a 7-inch driver information display.

Ventilated front seats are part of the available Driver Assist Package, and a panoramic sunroof becomes available for $1,360.

XSE - From $31,415

The XSE combines the XLE upgrades with the sport-tuned suspension found on the SE. The XSE also gets quad chrome exhaust outlets, 19-inch gloss black wheels, and textured metal interior trim.

TRD - $33,180

Along with its standard V6, the TRD packs a track-tuned suspension, upgraded brakes, an aerodynamic body kit, 19-inch matte black wheels, summer performance tires, and SofTex seats with red stitching and TRD logos.

The JBL system is just about the only major option left. Curiously, a sunroof isn't available on the TRD, and the rear seat doesn't fold down.

CarsDirect Tip

The 2021 Toyota Cmary LE and SE carry reasonable prices, but value drops off as options are added. Buyers who want more than the standard features should advance directly to XLE or XSE, which are thoroughly equipped from the start.

Family sedan with a wild side. The 2021 Toyota Camry ushers in a sportier look and feel. It has always been and always will be a family-first sedan, but this latest iteration is slightly different. Plus, with a V6 engine giving it respectable straight-line speed and an aggressive-looking TRD trim, the Camry can attract a new type of buyer.

This sportier Camry design is starting to age, but it remains relevant. Its age has put it at a disadvantage against some other competitors in the midsize sedan class, but the Camry remains a standout.

A powertrain for all but lacking true performance. The Camry has a trio of powertrain options. Its base 203-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is nothing to write home about, but its optional all-wheel drive sets it apart. The Honda Accord and Mazda Mazda6 offer only front-wheel drive.

Where the Camry beefs up is with its optional 3.5-liter V6 that delivers a healthy 301 hp and sprints this family sedan to 60 mph in the six-second range. This V6 trumps virtually every optional engine in the midsize sedan class.

The V6 is also available in the TRD model, which includes a sleek body kit, tuned suspension, a cat-back exhaust, and more. While it may look the part of a sports sedan, the Camry TRD is no track machine.

For buyers seeking something on the thriftier side, there’s the Camry Hybrid, which pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine to an electric motor for a combined 208 hp. It may not be powerful, but, according to the EPA, it delivers a respectable 52 miles per gallon combined, beating the Accord Hybrid by 4 mpg.

Toyota Camry

Sporty looks that aren’t for everyone. The Toyota Camry boasts intriguingly sporty looks that are sure to grab some eyes. It stands out in a class that mostly specializes in blending in with its bold front end, long hood, sharp body lines, and more. Add in the TRD package, and you have a surprisingly sporty family hauler.

This sporty look is far from fitting for every buyer. Some shoppers want to blend in with the crowd and never be seen. For these buyers, the Accord or Volkswagen Passat may be a good buy.

Loads of features and safety gear. The Camry has no shortage of standard features, as its base LE trim includes LED headlights, a power driver seat, and a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Buyers can also add premium upgrades like a 9-inch touchscreen, a JBL audio system, and a surround-view camera.

While the Passat, Subaru Legacy, and Nissan Altima mostly match the Camry’s standard features, the Accord and Mazda6 lack standard smartphone connectivity – a nearly unforgivable oversight in today’s automotive world.

The Camry is also fully loaded with safety gear, including standard automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane keeping assist. This exceeds or matches all of its key competitors.

Final thoughts. The 2021 Toyota Camry remains a family car for the masses, despite bolder looks that may not work for some buyers. Add to that its potent V6 and the sportier TRD model, and it also attracts the enthusiast crowd. That said, don’t mistake the Camry – including the Camry TRD – for a performance sedan.

Buyers who prefer to blend in with the crowd may be taken aback by the Camry’s styling. These buyers may be best suited in a Honda Accord or VW Passat.
