Although the current generation of the Volkswagen Arteon is only two years old, the German automaker is putting its brand halo through a refresh for 2021. From an illuminated grille to Volkswagen's latest infotainment system, the 2021 Arteon is upping its game within the luxury sedan segment. Unfortunately, the new wagon version dubbed the Arteon Shooting Brake will not be making its way to the U.S.
At first glance, the 2021 Arteon seems to bring much of the same in terms of exterior design. It retains its sleek look with its signature body line spanning the length of the vehicle, and low-slung roofline giving it a coupe-like silhouette. Most of the changes come around the front grille, with now only three bars running the length of the nose and an optional LED strip connecting the headlights on either side. Black accents on the lower portion of the grille give it a more sport-focused look. Paint options have grown for 2021 with three new colors - Oryx White, Kings Red Metallic, and Lapiz Blue.
On the inside, the Arteon focuses on tech and luxury. With leatherette covering most of the inside, and a combination of soft-touch materials and aluminum accents, the Arteon presents a lush interior. To add a touch of personalization, midrange models and higher come with 30-color ambient lighting. The technology also gets an upgrade with Volkswagen’s new Digital Cockpit, standard 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and wireless charging.
Despite interior and exterior design updates, there will be no changes under the hood. The 2021 Arteon will continue on with the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that makes 268 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. This motor comes paired with the only transmission available - an 8-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive comes standard with all-wheel drive available on the SEL R-Line. The top of the line SEL Premium R-Line comes standard with all-wheel drive.
In terms of safety, the 2021 Arteon receives Volkswagen’s Travel Assist System which allows for partially automated driving within a set speed limit range. The system consists of automatic emergency braking with pedestrian monitoring, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control with predictive speed control.
