What's New

Mechanically unchanged for 2021, Volvo’s S90 sedan has undergone minor styling tweaks with a new grille and bumpers including a hidden exhaust tip at the rear. There’s a new trunk lid design and revised taillights, while the alloy wheels have been redesigned and wireless charging is available. Two rear USB ports join the list of standard equipment.

Like elsewhere in the Volvo lineup, the plug-in hybrid S90 is now called Recharge instead of T8.

Choosing Your Volvo S90

The S90 range comprises three trim levels: Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription. Prices start at $53,190 including destination for the Momentum and climb to $56,290 for both the R-Design and Inscription.

Engine Choices

Volvo’s 2.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder gas engine known as the T6 is standard across the lineup. The R-Design and Inscription are also available with T8 plug-in hybrid version of that powertrain now known as Recharge. The plug-in is a $5,400 upgrade.

T8 Turbo and Supercharged 4-Cylinder Plug-In Hybrid400 hp472 lb-ft25 mpg

Power is supplied to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The S90 is a five-seat sedan that offers 13.5 cubic feet of cargo space in its trunk. The rear seats are capable of folding down to open up more space.

Safety Features

Standard features across the S90 range include adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and front and rear parking sensors.

A surround-view camera is available on all models through the Advanced Package.

Connectivity

Every S90 receives a 9-inch touchscreen that comes standard with navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD radio, and satellite radio. A 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and wireless charging pad round of the list of standard connectivity features.

A Harman Kardon audio system with a subwoofer becomes standard on the R-Design, while a Bowers and Wilkins premium sound system is a $3,200 upgrade. A head-up display comes with the aforementioned Advanced Package.

Momentum - From $53,190

Momentum models are accessed with keyless entry and a hands-free power tailgate. The cabin features two-zone climate control, power front seats with heating and memory settings for the driver, and leather upholstery. The exterior is adorned with a panoramic sunroof, 18-inch wheels, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and adaptive LED headlights.

The $750 Climate Package adds heating elements to the rear seats, windscreen washers, and steering wheel. For $1,900, the Advanced Package adds high-level interior illumination, a head-up display, and a surround-view camera.

R-Design - From $56,290

R-Design trims ride on larger 19-inch alloy wheels, while the cabin incorporates perforated Nappa leather, metal mesh inlays, and the Advanced Pack’s interior illumination. The audio is upgraded to a Harman Kardon sound system with a subwoofer, while the climate control becomes four-zone.

The front seats receive power cushion extensions, while the passenger seats gains memory functionality. Power sunblinds for the rear side windows and rear window come standard.

An adaptive air suspension is a $1,200 upgrade.

Inscription - From $56,290

Differences between R-Design and Inscription models are restricted to the latter’s incorporation of oak decor inlays, ventilated instead of perforated Nappa leather, and comfort seat padding instead of sport padding. The alloy wheels are still 19-inch, but now with 10 spokes and of a less overtly sporty design.

The only upgrade exclusive to Inscription models is the $1,300 Lounge Package, which inserts an armrest between the two ventilated rear seats and gives front-seat occupants 10-point backrest massage functionality.

CarsDirect Tip

The 2021 Volvo S90 Momentum is so well equipped that it’s hard to justify the cost of upgrading to higher-spec models, especially given the marginal differences between R-Design and Inscription trims.
