Overview

What's New

The Audi A3 compact luxury sedan is all-new for 2022, though its engines are carried over from the old model. The body has been redesigned, interior specifications are improved, and Audi’s flagship infotainment system is standard in every model. There’s also an impressive safety roster across this three-trim range.

Choosing Your Audi A3

Any A3 can be ordered with either front or all-wheel drive, with Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive system adding $2,000 to the list price of each trim.

In FWD guise, Premium starts at $34,945 including destination, with Premium Plus available from $38,245 and the fully-loaded Prestige starting at $42,245.

Engine Choices

Every A3 is powered by a two-liter turbocharged TFSI engine, branded the "TFSI 40." It generates 201 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque in conjunction with a 48-volt mild hybrid system. This is supplied to either the front or all four wheels through a seven-speed automatic transmission.

FWD models return an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 29 miles per gallon city, 38 mpg highway, and 32 combined. In AWD guise, this drops to 28/36/31 MPG.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

Cargo capacity for the five-seater Audi A3 has yet to be confirmed at the time of writing (August 2021), but it should be similar to the 12.3 cu ft offered by the outgoing model.

Safety Features

The A3’s cabin is packed with ten airbags and an array of driver aids, though many of these are options rather than standard. Features across the range include pre-collision preparation, with a camera and radar alerting the driver to potential hazards.

There’s lane departure warning and high beam assist, but you’ll need Premium Plus trim to receive adaptive cruise control and active lane assistance. Prestige is unique in receiving a head-up display and traffic sign recognition.

Connectivity

Every A3 comes with a 10.1-inch touchscreen incorporating the company’s latest MIB 3 system, with handwriting recognition and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster.

Every model has Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay, but features like navigation and wireless charging remain on the options list on Premium Plus, and they aren’t available at all on the entry-level Premium trim. Both are standard on Prestige, as is a head-up display.

A3 Premium – MSRP From $34,945

Despite being the most affordable A3 model, the Premium is well appointed both inside and out. It has leather seats that are heated in the front with eight-way power including four-way lumbar support.

A panoramic sunroof and three-zone climate are also standard, alongside a ten-inch infotainment system with smartphone compatibility. There’s also keyless entry, rain and light sensors, and LED exterior lights.

The Convenience Package is the only option on Premium trim, costing $1,900. It includes auto-dimming and power-folding exterior mirrors, cross-traffic alert and side radar assistance, parking assistance and memory for the driver’s seat, plus an alarm and SiriusXM radio.

A3 Premium Plus – MSRP From $38,245

Significant enhancements on Premium Plus models include adaptive cruise control and a key that can be used from the bottom of a handbag, for fully keyless entry and engine starting.

Wireless device charging and memory for the driver’s seat are other luxuries, while safety is improved during highway drives by active lane assistance.

The $2,250 Technology package combines navigation and Audi’s 12.3-inch virtual cockpit with traffic sign recognition and a 3D Bang & Olufsen stereo system.

A3 Prestige – MSRP From $42,245

Prestige receives the Technology package mentioned above as standard, while adding welcome features like a head-up display and matrix-design LED headlights. There’s also enhanced LED interior lighting with birch wooden inlays.

There are no packages available on the Prestige.

CarsDirect Tip

It’s significantly cheaper to choose a Premium Plus model and add the Technology package, bringing you the key highlights of Prestige trim for almost $2,000 less.

Decidedly fun. The A3 is quite peppy in both trim levels with its combined 213 horsepower from both the turbo four and 48-volt hybrid system that assists in acceleration. While front-wheel drive is standard for the A3, all-wheel drive does make it accelerate a bit quicker, but not by much; both models will hit 60 mph in a bit more than six seconds. The A3’s steering is sharp and it feels light through the corners, but it is still oriented more towards comfort than performance.

On the other hand, the S3 offers much more performance with 306 horsepower and almost as much torque, a 4.5 second 0-60 mph time, a sporty-sounding exhaust, bigger brakes, and a lower ride height. Optional adaptive damper assist with increasing agility, but the S3 is unbalanced towards the front end, which results in heavy understeer at the limit. This is acceptable for most people, but those looking for something to take to their local track day may want to look elsewhere.

Quality interior. Like most of its competitors, the A3 chases a more palatable price point for most consumers, but unlike others, Audi has been able to do so while convincingly maintaining its luxury car status. While not quite on par with its more expensive stablemates, the A3 has high-quality materials throughout the cabin that look and feel great.

Additionally, all trims come very well equipped. While some rivals like BMW offer Apple CarPlay as a yearly subscription service, the A3 includes it as part of its standard features along with LED headlights, a digital instrument cluster, and leather upholstery. Optional extras include Nappa leather, wireless charging, driver-seat memory functions, a larger digital instrument cluster, and a premium Bang and Olufsen sound system.

Audi A3

Limited space. The A3 has never claimed to be a large car, but its small size may surprise some. Functionally, this is a car for someone who doesn’t need to carry rear-seat passengers or cargo on a regular basis. That said, there is enough rear legroom for most adults in the back, but anyone over six-foot may find it a bit cramped, especially in headroom.

Trunk space is even more limited, with just 10.9 cubic feet in the A3, and only 8.3 cubic feet in the S3, which rivals many convertibles. However, the rear seats can be lowered, which will allow you to carry longer items if necessary.

Active safety. The A3 does come equipped with some standard active safety features, such as automatic high beams, front and rear automatic emergency braking, and active lane control. Optionally, the A3 offers active cruise control, automatic parking, blind-spot monitoring, and a passenger occupant detection system. While other manufacturers like Subaru and Honda usually include more as standard, the A3’s offerings meet or exceed the standard safety features of its luxury rivals in this segment.

Final thoughts. The Audi A3 is a small sporty sedan with plenty of technology, safety, and features for someone looking to make the leap into luxury car ownership. It can easily play the role of a commuter car or provide a bit of fun on twisty backroads on a weekend trip. The S3 is a true sport sedan that will put a smile on your face anytime you open the tap.

While we wish there were a bit more standard safety features included, we must acknowledge that Audi is towards the front of the pack compared to most of its European competitors. Additionally, we would be happy with a bit more rear headroom and a slightly bigger trunk.

In terms of competition, the rear-wheel-drive BMW 2-Series will offer a sportier driving experience, but at the cost of less standard luxury features. The Mercedes A-class may be considered a more stylish option compared to the Audi, but the Audi offers more standard tech and safety features.
