The second-gen Audi A5 rolled into showrooms in 2018, boasting a more angular body, a sharp cabin, and updated powertrain options. With this look still up to date, we expect the 2022 Audi A5 to be a carryover model.
The current Audi A5, which is available as a coupe, convertible, or five-door Sportback, boasts a stunning exterior design that includes a wide Singleframe grille, sharp body lines, a swooping roofline, and a long and lean footprint. Despite entering its fifth model year, this body is still a beauty, and we expect it to remain the same in the 2022 Audi A5.
Inside, the current Audi A5 continues the brand’s trend of cleanliness and relative simplicity with its dashtop infotainment screen, limited HVAC controls, simple T-style gear shifter, and light contrasting accents. It’s an exercise of luxury by restraint, and Audi is the master of this domain. We expect the 2022 Audi A5 to carry on with the same interior design.
Under its hood, the Audi A5 Sportback starts a 201-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Optional on the Sportback and standard on the coupe and convertible is a 261-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine (a 13-hp lift over the previous year). Both four-cylinder engines pair with a seven-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. On the spicier end of the scale is the S5 with its 349-hp turbocharged V6 that pairs with an eight-speed transmission and all-wheel drive. The S5 also gets a stiffer suspension to improve upon the A5’s already pinpoint handling. We expect the 2022 Audi A5 to retain the current powertrain options.
The Audi A5 comes standard with automatic emergency braking, and it also has optional adaptive cruise control, active lane control, and other driver-assistance features. In IIHS testing, the 2021 A5 Sportback earned the Top Safety Pick designation with “Good” crash tests across the board, “Good”-rated optional LED projector headlights, and “Superior”-rated automatic emergency braking. The A5 coupe also received all high marks, but it hasn’t been fully tested yet. The IIHS hasn’t tested the A5 convertible yet. We expect these features and ratings to remain the same in the 2022 A5.
