What's New
The 2022 Audi A6, A6 Allroad, S6, and RS 6 Avant feature minor updates to expand the availability of packages and offer new wheel and interior trim designs.
Choosing Your Audi A6, A6 Allroad, S6, RS 6 AVANT
The Audi A6 is available in three trim levels across its various models; Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige. The mid-size platform ranges from the sedan’s Premium trim, starting at $56,945, and reaches upwards to the RS 6 Avant, which starts at $117,545. The A6 Allroad and S6 start off at the Premium Plus level and the RS 6 Avant simply doesn’t need to be tied to any trim level designation.
Engine Choices
The A6 sedan offers a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, designated the 45 TFSI, that produces 261 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque.
The optional ($3,900) 55 TFSI 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbocharged engine (standard on the A6 Allroad) produces 335 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque and is equipped with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The S6 reworks that 3.0-liter to produce 444 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque and is fitted with an eight-speed automatic transmission, replacing the lesser engines’ seven-speed unit.
The RS 6 Avant is fitted with a 4.0-liter turbocharged V8 that boasts 591 peak hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive is, understandably and thankfully, standard across the lineup.
As expected, the fuel economy ratings vary with the power outputs. The 45 TFSI earns an EPA-estimated 26 miles per gallon combined, the 55 TFSI lowers that by two points, and the S6 lowers that by a further two points to 22 mpg. The RS 6 Avant scores 17 mpg combined.
Engine Type | Horsepower | Torque | Fuel Economy (Combined) |
45 TFSI | 261 hp | 273 lb-ft | 26 mpg |
55 TFSI (A6-Allroad) | 335 hp | 369 lb-ft | 24 mpg |
55 TFSI (S6) | 444 hp | 443 lb-ft | 22 mpg |
V8 | 591 hp | 590 lb-ft | 17 mpg |
Passenger and Cargo Capacity
The A6 stretches to 194.4 inches in length and rides on a 115.1-inch wheelbase. Rear seat passengers are afforded 37.4 inches of legroom and there are 13.7 cubic feet of trunk space which can be expanded with the split-folding rear seatbacks.
The Allroad and Avant versions are nearly the same length and provide more rear headroom (39.5 inches) and more cargo space (30 cubic feet). They retain the same, five-passenger seating configuration and there is no option of a rear-facing cargo area bench seat.
Safety Features
The A6 is equipped with the standard fare of active safety features and allows for the full suite to be fitted to most trim levels. Automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, and parking sensors are included. Adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist and blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert are featured on the A6 Premium Plus trim but require additional packages on the A6 Allroad, S6, and RS 6 Avant.
The 2022 Audi A6 has not been tested by IIHS and, while it hasn’t been fully evaluated, earns a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA.
