Overview

What's New

The 2022 Audi Q3 may look the same as last year’s model but gains Audi’s latest infotainment system and includes additional safety features as standard equipment.

Choosing Your Audi Q3

The Audi Q3 is available in two trims. The Premium trim starts at $35,995 and the Premium Plus is priced at $39,295.

Engine Choices

There are two four-cylinder engine options for the Q3. The base engine is designated 40 TFSI and generates 181 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque while the uprated 45 TFSI engine displaces the same 2.0-liters but puts out 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Both are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive is standard.

The less-powerful engine is the more efficient of the two, with EPA estimates of 23 miles per gallon city, 30 mpg highway, and 26 combined. The optional engine sacrifices two mpg points across the board.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The Q3 can carry five passengers but the compact interior will likely make that a rare occurrence. Its 176.6-inch length is city-friendly, however, it comes at the expense of rear-seat space. With 36.1 inches of legroom and 37.6 inches of headroom, the Q3 is less roomy than its competition. The same is true for cargo space, measuring 23.7 cubic feet with the rear seatbacks up and 48 cubic feet with them lowered.

Safety Features

The 2022 Q3 gains additional standard active safety equipment and now its roster includes automatic emergency braking, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beams, rain-sensing wipers, and parking sensors in the front and rear. The Premium Plus trim includes adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist, full LED dynamic headlights, and a surround-view camera system. Rear side airbags are optional on both trims for $350.

While the 2022 model hasn’t yet been rated by IIHS, the 2021 model scored Good ratings for crashworthiness, however, it fell short with its pedestrian avoidance performance. Also, the base trim’s headlights were rated Poor, however, the upgraded headlights on the Premium Plus trim were rated Good. The Q3 earned a five-star overall rating from NHTSA.

Connectivity

The big news for the 2022 model year is the upgraded infotainment system. Dubbed MIB3, it is 10-times faster than the previous system, responds to natural-speaking commands, and can connect wirelessly to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. When the Q3 is fitted with the optional Technology Package, the infotainment touchscreen size grows from 8.8 inches to 10.1 inches and includes a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot via Audi Connect, SiriusXM 360L, Amazon Alexa integration. That package also includes navigation and an upgraded 15-speaker, 16-channel amplifier, and 650-watt Sonos sound system.

There are two front and two rear USB ports to handle charging duties while the Premium Plus trim adds the convenience of wireless charging.

Q3 Premium – MSRP From $35,995

The Premium trim is fitted with 18-inch wheels, LED headlights and taillights (with dynamic turn signals), aluminum roof rails, a panoramic sunroof, and a power tailgate. Inside, the heated seats and steering wheel are wrapped in leather, the cabin features three climate-controlled zones, and the driver views critical information by way of a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster.

The $1,450 Convenience Package includes 8-way power front seats with position memory for the driver, power-folding mirrors with auto-dimming for the driver, proximity entry with hands-free functionality for the tailgate, a Homelink garage door opener, and a frameless auto-dimming interior mirror.

When fitted with the optional engine, the Q3 receives the S Line trim which adds unique front and rear bumpers and rocker panel trim. The Black Optic Package also becomes available for $1,700 and includes 19-inch titanium wheels and gloss black front grille, bumper trim, rocker panel trim insert, and rear bumper accents.

LED interior lighting is a $150 stand-alone option.

Q3 Premium Plus – MSRP From $39,295

The top-level Premium Plus trim includes the features of the Premium trim’s Convenience Package and ambient LED interior lighting but most significantly, offers the Technology Package for $2,700. In addition to the infotainment upgrades, the package also increases the driver’s digital display to 12.3 inches across.

The Black Optic Package is also available when fitted with the more powerful engine.

CarsDirect Tip

The Q3 proves that going small doesn’t mean sacrificing luxurious features. While the fully-loaded version is tempting, the Premium Package with the Convenience Package is the best value.

Jack of all trades; master of none. The 2022 Audi Q3 is straightforward and fails to stand out in a crowd, but that’s long been Audi’s M.O. That said, the Q3 does a lot of stuff very well. It may not be the very best in any category, but it delicately combines all its skills into one affordable and inoffensive luxury crossover.

Attractive but simple. The 2022 Audi Q3’s SUV body isn’t quick to make anyone’s heart skip a beat from its appearance. It’s attractive but in a simple sort of way. Its body is tight and athletic, but there are no hard angles or sharp creases that grab your eyes.

Inside, the Q3 continues its simple ways with a toned-down cabin that’s only a hair more exciting than its body. You can, however, spice things up with body-color panels that almost give the cabin a more Volkswagen-like look, which we feel is a compliment.

Buyers seeking more luxury or opulence may prefer the redesigned Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class or the BMW X1.

Ample power, but a heavyweight. The 2022 Audi Q3 comes in two flavors, but both use the same 2.0-liter turbocharged four-pot engine. The base “40” model has 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, and the “45” model has 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Both feature standard all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Audi Q3

Considering the X1’s 228 hp max and the GLA-Class’ 221-hp base engine, this is about the right amount of power. However, its seven-second 0-to-60 time lags behind the GLA-Class and X1’s 6.6- and 6.3-second 0-60 sprints, respectively. If Audi could trim some of that 3,900-pound curb weight the Q3 is carrying around, it’d be far more competitive.

Spacy and comfortable cabin. Inside, the 2022 Audi Q3’s front seats are good enough for long hauls, though we recommend the optional eight-way power seats. The standard leather and heat set it apart from its German rivals, though.

In the rear is where the Q3 shines brightest with 36.1 inches of legroom and plenty of space for a pair of adults. This is tighter than the X1 and GLA-Class by 0.9 and 2.3 inches, respectively, but the combination of the seating room and at least 18.7 cubes of cargo room is a standout. Plus, you can slide the rear seat forward and backward to compensate for longer legs or more cargo.

This cargo area really stands out against the GLA-Class, which can haul just 15.4 cubic feet of cargo with the rear seats upright. The X1 remains the king of cargo at 27.1 cubes with the rear seats upright. The Q3 strikes a nice balance between the two.

Final thoughts. The Audi Q3 provides a delicate balance of performance, luxury, style, and spaciousness in the subcompact luxury crossover space. Sure, the GLA-Class has roomier rear seats, and the X1 has a more spacious cargo area, but the Q3 offers a great middle-ground option at a relative value with its starting MSRP of $35,995 (destination fees included).
